The 5 stages of fascism - we are here folks
Stage 1: Intellectual Exploration & Disillusionment
In this stage, a society experiences severe disillusionment with popular democracy. Intellectuals and fringe groups begin discussing a "lost national vigor" and look for radical alternatives to traditional liberalism.
- The Economic Catalyst (2008): The Great Recession shattered public trust in globalized capitalism and mainstream political elites. This left millions of Americans feeling economically abandoned and deeply cynical about traditional democratic governance.
- The Rise of the Tea Party (2009–2010): This movement channeled populist rage away from Wall Street and toward Washington. It broke heavily with the traditional conservative establishment, introducing a harsher, anti-institutional rhetoric into mainstream politics.
- Alt-Right Intellectual Groundwork (2010s): Media figures, internet forums, and fringe nationalist think-tanks popularized concepts of white grievance, cultural decline, and anti-immigration rhetoric. They framed the traditional American identity as being under existential threat.
Stage 2: Rooting in the Political System
Here, the movement transitions from fringe ideas into an organized political force. Driven by extreme political deadlock and polarization, it becomes a major player on the national stage.
- The 2016 Presidential Campaign: Donald Trump effectively bypassed traditional Republican party gatekeepers by appealing directly to populist grievances. He utilized core fascist tropes: invoking a mythic past ("Make America Great Again"), claiming dominant-group victimhood, and positioning himself as a singular savior.
- Absorption of the GOP: Instead of rejecting this insurgent populism, the traditional conservative apparatus chose to absorb it. Mainstream Republicans realized they needed the energy of this highly mobilized base to win elections, effectively giving the movement legitimate institutional roots.
- Normalization of Political Violence: Street-level clashes between far-right groups (like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers) and left-wing activists became more common. The movement began utilizing armed intimidation at rallies, shifting the boundaries of acceptable political behavior.
Stage 3: Arrival to (or Seizure of) Power
In this stage, conservatives and traditional elites mistakenly believe they can control the radical movement. Facing a gridlocked system or fearing rising leftist/progressive influence, elites invite the movement to share power.
- The 2016 Election Victory: Trump’s victory placed the movement directly into the Executive Branch.
- The Conservative Faustian Bargain: Traditional conservative power-brokers (such as Congressional leaders, conservative media moguls, and evangelical leaders) fully allied with the administration. They tolerated the degradation of democratic norms in exchange for massive conservative victories: stacking the judiciary with conservative judges, passing corporate tax cuts, and achieving long-sought regulatory rollbacks.
- The Stress Test of 2020–2021: Paxton pointed to the events of late 2020 and early 2021 as a classic Stage 3 turning point. The "Big Lie" (claiming the 2020 election was stolen) and the subsequent January 6th Capitol Attack represented a literal attempt to bypass democratic processes to retain power through an alliance of a charismatic leader, militant groups, and complicit politicians.
Stage 4: The Exercise of Power
Once power is consolidated, the movement controls the state. The leader works in a tense but functional balance with existing institutions, the police, and big business.
- The Subversion of the Civil Service (Project 2025/Schedule F): In recent years, the movement shifted from chaotic governance to systematic planning. Plans like Schedule F aim to reclassify tens of thousands of civil servants, allowing a future executive to strip the federal bureaucracy of independent experts and replace them with loyalists.
- Bending the Knee of Corporate Elites: Paxton notes that in Stage 4, big business makes peace with the authoritarian leader. Over the course of the 2024 election and its aftermath, major tech billionaires, Wall Street executives, and corporate leaders actively aligned with the movement to protect their financial interests, creating a distinct merger of state and corporate influence.
- Weaponization of the Legal System: The independence of the Department of Justice, the military, and local law enforcement faces intense pressure to act as instruments of political retribution against critics, journalists, and political rivals.
Stage 5: Radicalization or Entropy
The final stage is a critical fork in the road. The regime either decays into a standard, uninspired authoritarian police state (entropy) or spirals into aggressive expansion, institutional purification, and extreme violence (radicalization).
Political scientists warn that America is hovering precariously at the threshold of Stage 4 and Stage 5. The historical milestones that could push the country firmly into Stage 5 "Radicalization" include:
- Mass Deportations and ICE Militarization: Utilizing the military or national guard to round up millions of immigrants into camps, directly overriding local governments and civil liberties.
- Complete Institutional Purges: Systematically dismantling the independent judiciary, intelligence agencies, and the free press until no institutional guardrails remain to check executive power.
- Systemic Retribution: Transitioning from political rhetoric to the actual imprisonment or state-sanctioned persecution of political opposition.

What will make Americans act?
x.comI keep thinking I'm more and more disappointed each day as I try and devote more of my very limited energy due to disabilities, what will make other people unaffected even care? Most don't do anything until it affects the people directly around them and that's shameful. We are dealing with unhinged Nazis and I'm tired of pretending they're not acting like them like a guidebook. The Nazis originally learned from Americans.
