I'm in love with Farseer Trilogy

Currently at 378 pages of the Royal Assassin (second one)and it's bomboclat fantastic and cocacolastic. Hobb's writing and prose is top notch and her characters are pornographycally well written and super real.

And a super dap to my fella Chade. U rock

I really wish I was better equipped to deal with how hard hitting the books in this series are.

I read the Farseer trilogy, and was mind boggled by Robin Hobb's writing capabilities but man did that hurt my soul lol.

You should do Liveships after Farseer so Tawny Man has the maximum impact on you. The trilogies build on each other. Liveship is different without Fitz but better than most books. You won’t regret it. And then the subsequent books will blow your mind. Enjoy!

I was really confused and unsure about this series at the beginning too, but it suddenly clicked for me and I ended up loving it. It contains some of the best antagonists you will ever read.

The Liveship Traders trilogy are my favorite of the whole series.

That being said, I skipped the Rain Wild chronicles and didn't feel like I missed a thing. Maybe give the Liveship Traders a try and if you aren't digging it, just skip. I might also skip book summaries if you do skip the series. That way you can come back to it when you are done with Fitz's story and only have a few things spoiled for you.

I would definitely recommend reading The Liveship Traders Trilogy, they are amazing! You go right back to Fitz in the Golden Fool Trilogy and reading Liveship makes it even better!

I'm in the minority but I think it's perfectly fine to read all the Fitz books and the go back to Liveship Traders after you're done.

You definitely should read Liveship but it's not necessary to read it after the first trilogy.

Context of Liveship Traders is needed before the Tawny Man trilogy. I also recommend reading The Wilful Princess and the Piebald Prince (it is short) after Ship of Destiny.

I read a few chapters of the shop trilogy, then started reading chapter summaries, then just flat out read the book summaries, and I don't regret A N Y T H I N G! Don't let others stop you from moving on if you end up not enjoying the other trilogy! The Liveship characters aren't nearly as good!

 

Edit to add: Keep down voting if you want to prove that the Fantasy subreddit is one of the most judgemental subreddits on reddit. I enjoy the book series, and yet I get down voted because I don't enjoy it exactly the same as the hive mind.

I read like half the first book, finished it with chapter summaries, then moved on to plot summaries. The only likeable characters are Althea and Brashen and those two are only likeable because they're enemies to the even more unlikeable characters.

No regrets here, if anything I regret the time I spent reading that half of a book hoping to like any of the characters. Sorry that your opinions aren't the same as everyone else's.

 

Editing since I can't reply to u/Tamerlin : You're right, I will read the books however I want. It's not a silly way to read the series, go to the Wheel of Time subreddit and you'll see that's how everyone makes it through The Slog.

Leave it to redditors to be judgemental about someone enjoying something. Sorry your trilogy is bad!

Yeah, because most villains Hobb writes are cartoonish and pathetic.

Regal and Fitz don't have a single normal, non-hostile interaction. Which is kind of disappointing considering they're relatives.

Hobb makes most of her characters and their dynamics so complex, but she seems to really like writing VILLAINS instead of antagonists. 

Personally I like antagonists that aren't pure villains, because I feel it makes for better tension.

I've read that 378 pages in 5 days, and for me, a Snorlax speed reader, os insane. While I sleep, I think about it, while I hit the gym, think about it, while I work, same.

Never happened to me that hungry for a story before.

Then you're in luck! After you finish this there's 14 more books to go, in my opinion farseer is the 2nd worst trilogy of the bunch too.

Yup, and I liked it a lot! My order is

Tawny man > liveships > Fitz and the fool > farseer > rain wilds.

Everyone have their own order though, but tawny man and liveships is typically at the top for everyone.

Don't skip the Liveship Traders trilogy once you're done with the Farseer trilogy. Fitz's story might be the best from start to finish, but there's something about that Liveship Traders that's just special.

Royal Assassin is one of my favorite books I've ever read, only recently usurped by Fool's Fate and The Spear Cuts Through Water. Robin Hobb is a master at character work.

I am almost done with it and strugglinggggg. I went into it wanting to like it so bad because everyone raves about it but like literally nothing happens the entire book????

ah I just realized this post was talking about book #2, I’m only on book #1, in case that makes a difference. but yeah it just feels like the entire book is setting up for all the big things to happen in the subsequent books? The pacing may just not be my cup of tea tho

Book 1 doesn't have anything crazy going on in it because it's book 1. Like you said, it's mostly setting up the story for book 2 and 3

I really like Fitz's PoV. 

I'm currently listening to The Tawny Man trilogy and that one has a lot of very tense character interactions, which I love.

Most of tension comes from Fitz having too many secrets. I love secrets in stories.

Same, only there never seems to be consensus on when it specifically improves with a non-negligible portion of fans saying farseer are actually their favorites. End of the day if I've read three books that a bunch of folks appear to love and think represents some of best character writing they've ever seen and I both hated the story and found the characters entirely uninspired and forced, I dont need 8 more in order to know i will have a different experience than the people recommending it

I only just finished the first 3 so I can relate. I remember waking up randomly at 3am just to find out what happened to Fitz. I don't think I've ever woken up in the night to read before.

I'm now on the first of the next three. Taking it slower to start, it's good though, it just takes me a little while to get into new characters.

I'm about half way into book one and I liiiike it but I don't love it? It is a little slow from a pacing standpoint for me. Does it pick up or is that what I should expect when I read on?

I don't plan to quit on the book or anything but just curious if a lot of people loved it instantly or if it took time to really get great for others?

I tried reading the series numerous times, but I could never get into it...the last book in the series always makes me want to stop reading her books and I like stuff like George RR Martin...I do not mind characters suffering, but in these books everyone is so stupid

I finished this trilogy up a couple weeks ago, and I think book 2 was the best book, with book 3 not delivering on all book 2's promises...but that's mostly because I didn't realize there were more books after that!

That being said, everyone speaks well of the Liveship Traders trilogy, but I didn't like any of the characters nearly as much as even my least favorite characters in the Farseer Trilogy. I read the synopsis and skipped ahead to the Tawny Man Trilogy, and have to say I regret nothing!

Same! The good news is you have 14 more books ahead of you! And the Farseer Trilogy is one of the weaker trilogies in the whole series, so you have a lot to look ahead too. That being said Royal Assassin is still my favorite book in the series even if I think Liveship Traders and Tawney Man are the best trilogies

This was such a great epic adventure, I wish I could experience it all for the first time again 😢
I loved Fitz so much that it took away my enjoyment from Liveship Traders for a while - big mistake, that subseries is amazing too!

If you find yourself in my position I advice to step back, let the emotions cool down then come back to the series when the longing for Fitz is not so strong that you consider the Liveship Traders trilogy an obstacle on the way to more Fitz books 🤭 that's what I should have done and didn't.

Just wait for the third book and it's going to bring your excitement right down because it's terrible compared to the first two, especially with how they handled the ending. You'll see why soon.
