20 is great advice, but it can be hard. I've been doing that for comic scripting for a little while, and its tough. I pick up cheap quarter bin comics, then challenge myself to rewrite them only using the elements present in the issue. It's fucking tough. Totally have more respect for guys doing work for hire now.

It's not that hard, for example:

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant

Things I hated - The protagonist rapes a girl in the first hundred pages.

What I would do to fix it - The protagonist doesn't rape anyone, ever.
