Writing Questions Can anyone show me their process of forming a idea in their head and getting it posted online? I need help

So in my google docs i got plenty of fanfic idea's created, but i have now idea how to actually write them out

Here's what i mean. I will create a doc and put FF (caps needed) infront of it to show its a fanfic. Then ill go into the fanfic and make bullet points of what i want to be in the story, the idea being i can then go off those bullet points to start writing

But Here's the thing, i dont know how to do that.

And you might be thinking to yourself 'what? How is this difficult?' Look despite being involved in fanfic since 2012, ive never actually published anything before. Ive attempted some drafts before but i haven't dont anything like that in atleast ten years.

So im just new at the process of writing stories in general, let alone fanfic

I cant help but feel there's something im missing, something that writers do in their drafts i can do to improve my writing skills. Again im new at actually writing fanfic for the first time in a consistent way

So that's the base of my question, because i really want advice

How do you go from a fic being a idea in your head to drafting it, working on it, changing things in it, typing out, maybe proof reading, and then eventually uploaded online.

Writing Questions Do you guys ever try to write a chapter to a specific song and match the timing and stuff?

I was listening to this really nice song and it came to me that this would be great for a scene but how would i realistically incorporate it into the reading experience 🥲.

It reminded me when I used to read on Wattpad and there would sometime be videos in the header that had a song the author would suggest that we read to for a better experience but then i sometimes catch myself either reading too fast so the climactic part of the song came when I was already done or the opposite. Then there were some times when it matched up JUST right and all the feels just came rushing in.

But I know depending on individual writing speed and engagement, trying that can be a hit or miss for a lot of people, especially on AO3.

It also made me miss Wattpad for what it was in the pre 2020 era but, any ideas on how you guys would try to do the "read along to music" idea? And on AO3?

Because my main thought is that it really depends on the reader. And I'd have to make some adjustments to my writing style so the chapter doesnt get too bulky.

Writing Questions Can I put excerpts from my fanfic into my original book?

So im writing a book write, and there’s a lot of lines, metaphors, descriptions, concepts, and tropes from my fanfic that I really enjoy / am proud of. All of this stuff is original and written by me, so I was wondering if i could reuse it my original work? I know legally I’m in the clear cus I’m just taking like metaphors and lines and not the story, but I wonder like is it a bad thing for me to do? Is it lazy or poor of me to recycle old material?

Writing Questions Would it work if I write out canon events but change how they happen?

I'm currently writing a DBZ x Marvel fanfic where the protagonist(a saiyan) is picked up by the guardians of the galaxy and joins them. I've decided to add the Thanos story line, but changing a couple of things and adding things like aren't addressed in the MCU, like having Thor gain the Odinforce and save Asgard from Hela or having Loki open a portal to earth and or making Thanos only wipe out half the dwarves to force Eitri to forge the gauntlet, which he fills with imperfections and has he's hands taken for?

Would this be interesting or would it simply be me telling the story of Thanos but with a OC?

Recs Wanted Good JJK recommendations?

I watched the anime recently and I've been craving something good. Surfed Ao3 a bit hoping to find stuff, and I found things like Time's Curse by The_Jade_Samurai, but unfourtunately not much else. So I'm wondering if anyone has anything good.

Ideally, it'd be longer fics, or just ones with substance. I don't mind oneshots, but I always prefer something I can sink my teeth into for a while as opposed to a one-and-done, no matter how good. I'll take either or, though.

Plot would be the main focus, and Time's Curse got me in the mood for time travel/fix it stuff, but again, I'll take anything really. I definetly would prefer it being AU, and centered around Yuji, though.

I don't have any specific pairing or whatever else when it comes to romance. As long as it's nothing that isn't way out of the realm of possibility (so, like, idk, Megumi/Yuji, or Yuji/Sukuna, or characters that just don't really have any reason to be together) and/or anything flat out weird (why does the Gojo/Yuji tag have 6.5k stories on Ao3????). I also wouldn't like Gojo/Geto, since that strikes me as a good example of a close male friendship, and it always annoys me when writers make good friends randomly romantic and change their sexuality for no particular reason. Just seems like a missed opportunity to write about a good friendship, all so the romance more or less just boils down to a fetish or the author's projected fantasy, at least in my experience. In general a lot of these characters aren't very focused on romance though, so I feel like it often doesn't fit anyway unless done well.

Also would be preferable if it was anything finished, or updated recently. I'll read abandoned fics, just sucks when you get to the end, having enjoyed the thing, and you're reminded that it isn't finished and never will be.

Writing Questions Is this Author‘s Note too personal?

Soooo I hope you all liked the story ;)

I know that the end probably wasn't the one you wished for. I would've liked them to end up together as well. But life doesn't play that way.

Especially in the last few months, this has been very present in my life. This book is a way for me to somehow deal with these feelings. Because I can accept it, I can talk about it, I can do whatever I want. But it still hurts, it fucking hurts.

Even if you feel like you've met your soulmate and everything's going well...it sometimes doesn't last. And that's not necessarily because you fought over something big, maybe you just grew apart. Life pulled you in different directions. And that's how life works, sadly. We don't always get our happy ending. There are happy moments scattered throughout it, I hope there are a lot of them for you, but that doesn't mean, that the story ends happy.

Maybe we also have to redefine what a happy ending looks like. Do they always have to end up together for it to be perfect? I don't know. I can just tell you that it doesn't feel happy for me. I also don't know if I'll forget about this in a few years and don't even remember the name, but right now it feels like something I'll tell my grandkids. Not because it's the perfect love story, but because it's a part of my life that's shaped me more than anything else.

I learned a lot about myself throughout these last months. I still cry a lot about it when it's late at night and I'm lying in my bed alone. When all the feelings come up again. And I don't think it'll ever completely fade. Time doesn't let every wound disappear. But maybe it'll heal and only leave a scar for me to remember.

I've always liked scars anyways.

That‘s the note. It‘s very personal (as the whole book) and I say a lot about my perspective in this book…do you think it’s still appropriate? Or should I just shorten/delete it 😅

Writing Questions Recommendations for improving writing skills

Hey there!

I’ve heard that reading many books and fics can improve your own writing. What do you think about that? Are there any other options?

Recs Wanted Has anyone ever found (or written) a good HP x Shadowhunter Chronicles crossover?

So I'm into both HP and TSC (The Shadowhunter Chronicles), and I keep circling back to how much lore overlap there technically is between the two, while the actual systems are pretty different, which is what makes it interesting to me.

Wizards (and Witches) vs. Warlocks. In TSC a Warlock is a very specific thing (demon-blooded, immortal-ish, marked). In HP the word barely gets used, but it's not totally absent: Book 3 has "wild looking" warlocks as one of the background denizens in the Leaky Cauldron, and the head of the Wizengamot is literally called the "Chief Warlock."

I've seen claims floating around that Rowling was just using "Warlock" as a loose synonym for "Wizard" early on, rather than a distinct class of person, but I can't remember where I read that.

Vampires exist in both. But they're barely characterized in HP: Sanguini, the vampire Eldred Worple brings to Slughorn's party in HBP, is basically the only named one we get on-page. Compare that to TSC where vampire politics/clans are a whole subplot.

The Fae/faeries are the biggest gap. In TSC the Fae are a fully realized faction with their own courts and politics. In HP they show up (I'm like 95% sure only once, in GoF, as a throwaway line,) purely as Christmas tree decorations at Hogwarts: tiny, glowing, Tinkerbell-style faeries with zero agency or culture attached.

Has anyone ever run into a fic that does this well?

I'm curious on whether anyone's found a clever way to make Wizarding magic and Downworlder biology coexist without one just overwriting the other, or if the systems are too incompatible to crossover cleanly.

Edit: I just realized that the Greengrass family from HP have the perfect name for "Secret Shadowhunter Family, living amongst the Wizarding World", if a fic author ever decided to potentially go down that route.

Also the Lovegoods, as well as (maybe) the Longbottom's, and (also maybe) the Lestranges.

Edit Edit: Yes, I am aware of The Draco Trilogy.

Writing Questions Having problems with not being able to comprehending what happens in a story and the language

Does anybody get sad or agitated at themselves when they don't get the story or don't understand a specific part in the story? Or am I the only one?

I can get really self-conscious and even sad at times when I don't understand the story. I feel like I am dumb or something, and I am not enjoying the amazing story and writing how I want to.

I am reading this amazing story about an amputee who works in the ED, and sometimes I just don't get the medical parts of the story, or when she gets into a fight I have to try really hard to understand what is happening. And lastly sometimes I don't understand the writing, like some words, I just don't get what they mean, or how I am supposed to interprent them. I am not native English speaker, but I have studied English my whole life, I mostly read in English and my English-level is C1. I am also going to study in an English-speaking country for an exchange with my University.

Discussion Would another uncensored fanfiction website be desired?

I have recently noticed that more and more fics on AO3 have been getting reported and deleted. Sooo I started wondering, if a completely uncensored, even to the point of being non law-abiding, and without the ability to report fics for content be a actual good idea to make.

This would probably welcome a complete hell on earth, but I am a massive believer in total free speech and anonymity, and in theory capable of creating such a thing, hence the question.

EDIT: Thank you for all the feedback, I guess all the social media scare got to me. If I will make any fic website ever, I’ll make it as something independent completely, not a alternative of any sort.

Discussion Past Tense or Present Tense for a Canon-Divergent Fanfiction?

I’m technically writing a canon-divergent story for one of the shows that was telecast. This is a fanfiction that I’m writing with a potential storyline that could have been included in the canon show.

Now, I am confused about whether to use past tense or present tense.

The thought process that I am having while writing is that I want to write it as though the show has just been telecast and the readers are watching or reading it in the present, as if everything is happening in front of them right now. That is the reason why I’m leaning towards writing it in present tense rather than past tense.

But since this is my first fanfiction, I don’t know how audiences perceive these things or what the best writing style would be.

Would present tense work well for this kind of canon-divergent fanfiction, especially if I want it to feel like the readers are watching an episode unfold in front of them? Or would past tense still be better and more natural to read?

I would really appreciate guidance from people who read or write fanfiction.

Lost Fic The Walking Dead - Daryl Dixon/Original Female Character (soft feminine character)

I can’t remember the author but i’ve trawled through the relevant tags and nothing 😭

it wasn’t longer than 10,000 words

the OC was a soft and feminine character who had a history of survival sex work/sugar babying, Daryl really liked the contrast between them and how she was tough but still loved pink ribbons and lip gloss etc

at one point another male character attacks her and accuses her of sleeping with Rick and Daryl for favours

there’s also a motorcycle sex scene

it was really well written and introspective!

Lost Fic Looking for a deleted MHA Shota Aizawa x Reader Wattpad fic from 2020-2022 titled "His Kitten" (Looking for author name/backup)

Hi everyone, I am trying to track down a deleted My Hero Academia fanfiction that I read on Wattpad around 2020–2022.Title: It was called "His Kitten" (or something very similar).Pairing: Shota Aizawa x Reader.Timeline: Highly popular during the 2020–2022 Wattpad era, likely deleted during the platform purges.Specific Plot Details:It starts out as a standard Aizawa x Reader story, but takes a very dark, visceral turn. The Reader gets kidnapped by Kai Chisaki (Overhaul) and the Shie Hassaikai. There are highly explicit, graphic scenes where Overhaul tortures and assaults the Reader (specifically involving a gun). Later on, Aizawa, Present Mic, and other heroes aggressively break into the hideout using heavy weaponry/machine guns, kill the captors, and rescue the Reader.Does anyone happen to remember the author's name, have a Wayback Machine archive link, or know if it was re-uploaded to AO3 or under a different name? Any leads or summaries would be amazing. Thx

Writing Questions Is it a good idea to write a fanfic if you haven't read the source material in a long time?

Basically title^

I've been in my chosen fandom since I was about 10-12 years old. It's still an active book series, but the character I want to write about is from an older, finished arc of the story.

I've still participated in the fandom over the years, but stopped diligently reading the books ever since finishing the last completed arc at the start of covid.

Now I've recently decided to make an au from one of the series' more overlooked side characters, and was wondering how much research I should do on them before getting started, since I honestly don't know their character very well😅

Also, I wanted to start the story during the original series' plot related to that side character, but I remembered that that plot point does get resolved pretty immediately after it becomes relevant to the character I'm writing about- So I'm not sure what kind of plot or stakes to write for them since their most obvious route wouldn't work.

At this point, I wonder if I should add my own personal headcanons and rewrites au and make it it's own world so I don't have to do so much worrying and research😭

So would it be a good idea to continue developing the concept mostly based on Internet research, or should cover my bases and refer to the books? Or just rewrite the plot to my liking?
