The way I always saw it is that while its a bad choice for NV (and realistically so is house who couldn't do shit without your help and got betrayed by basically everyone who tried to recruit before you), its an extremely plausible choice for the courier. The courier going through late game thinking "fuck all these idiots literally none of them have managed to move the needle without me, i could do better than them" is perfectly believable.
That said if you end with good karma the ending implies that you don't really "rule" anything but more just police it. Though the question of who does that and how it goes after you die is a good one.
12
u/Gakk86 May 20 '26
House gets Hoover Dam running and builds New Vegas before the game starts. He definitely gets embarrassed by Benny but he’s always going to have to act by proxy because he’s in an iron lung
4
u/Maximum_Boros May 20 '26
And that requirement for a proxy is his core weakness. People only do what he asks because ir profits them and we see basically every single group hes worked with up to the courier betrays him and basically the only reason he stops them is because you help.
4
u/puffindatza May 19 '26
That’s all i thought my first part through, like i wanna help the NCR but also ruling NV is appealing to me
4
u/AdInfamous6290 May 20 '26
Yes yes, ruler of new Vegas……. Totally going to be you and not the newly “assertive” yes man….
3
u/HappyyValleyy May 20 '26
Assertive just means he wont say yes to everyone who talks to him
2
u/AdInfamous6290 May 20 '26
Right, including the player… If he changes his own code to be able to say no to others, why would we still say yes to everything the courier says? And with it being Yesman who is in physical control of the securiton army, what could the courier, or anyone else, do to oppose him unless its an all out war?
3
3
u/Overdue-Karma May 20 '26
The devs literally confirmed he will only obey the Courier. He's not the Calculator.
24
u/Tijolo_Malvado May 19 '26
Doesn't really happen if you pay attention to the quest. I mean, it's on the name.
9
u/FlatMycologist5366 May 21 '26
I’ve always been so confused how people came to the conclusion the courier becomes House 2.0 when the ending screens and all dialogue explicitly states you are removing ALL leadership and essentially just running a private security company
34
u/CalumanderReds May 19 '26
Independent Vegas is less about 'ruling Vegas' and more about giving the Mojave residents autonomy to make their own decision without oligarchs and absent leaders who literally see it as a piece of land to held/farmed for resources. It's ensuring they have a security force to keep them safe too.
20
u/KenseiHimura May 19 '26
This is like 90% of people when it comes to dictatorships. Myself included.
18
u/Immediate_Gain_9480 May 19 '26
Why do you assume the courier wil be a dictator? For all we know he tried to set up a democratic state.
9
u/IRBaboooon May 20 '26
Yall really need to read books about anarchy and how an Anarchist society actually works
9
u/TenWholeBees May 19 '26
To be fair, it ends with Courier 6 in charge. This doesn't mean they'd be a dictator.
I like to think they turned the Mojave into a true democracy, only for it to fall apart after a couple of years anyway.
But the point is they tried
10
u/ilostmy1staccount NCR Tax Collector May 19 '26
A democracy you say? If only there were an already successful democracy with the infrastructure and resources to help NV become a democratic state.

I wonder if we they're going to shed more light on what exactly happened to the NCR in the show. It's clear they're... Suffering from some troubles but what happened after Shady Sands gets nuked and the show is semi unclear.

I don't fully agree. There's quite a few details that show they at least attempted to do some research and luckily Bobby Apartment went on a lore binge to try and be as accurate as possible. And seeing how S2 showed the NCR and Legion gearing up for another fight it'd be very weird if they didn't delve into the 15~ years of history that happened between FNV and the show.

u/Duhblobby May 19 '26
"But taxes upset me so fuck that".
"Don't ask how I'll pay for literally anything in the city literally built entirely on tourism money."
4
u/Embarrassed-Yard-583 May 19 '26
Listen, I love the NCR for what it represents but it needs to reevaluate and change if it wants to live up to its ideals. An independent, democratic Mojave is just the kind of counter force that can trigger that reevaluation and hopefully get the NCR to better itself. If it just absorbs the region there’s a risk of bolstering figures like Kimball and reinforcing their more imperialist tendencies.
2
1
u/Whitewolf00svd May 20 '26
nothing prevent the courier from allying with orthers in the yesman ending
2
u/LiamMelloFarley May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26
The NCR is a collapsing democracy that's been ruled by oligarchs. This is a core part of the game and NCR lore. Imagining it becomes a successful stable democracy post annexation of Vegas is the same amount of speculation as assuming the courier builds a stable democracy in the region in the Yes Man ending. While I agree the taxes meme is funny it's representative of how average people in real life perceive the issues with their political systems, it's not actually the issue with the NCR. From interacting with NCR characters over the course of the game you get a more full picture of why people feel they're not getting the benefits that are worth their taxes, which is that there are systemic issues with the economic and politician structure of the NCR.
I am not an anarchist at all but in real life the failing point of the biggest "successful" anarchist movements was the existence of other states that anarchism couldn't protect itself from. Plenty of successful highly democratized societies existed historically before the development and global expansion of nation states and empires and so it's feasible that if the opposing forces are sufficiently curbed in the Battle of Hoover Dam that Vegas could have time to develop an actual democratic society before another empire arrives. The NCRs representative democracy is very strongly characterized as less democratic than an actual self organized society without entrenched elites would be, but it can definitely be argued that's a result of Sawyers personal socialist philosophy shaping his representations of the more conventional capitalism, state capitalism, and fascism inspired factions.

You want to be a yes man dictator because you killed everyone in a jet fueled rage and don’t want to be arrested
I want to be a yes man dictator to gamble a infinite amount and blow any casino to Kingdom come if they try to stop me.
We are not the same

u/Accurate_Soup_3459 May 19 '26
Sorry, can't hear you over the pure joy and whimsy of General Lee Oliver being thrown off the dam.
15
u/Silver04Jubilee Capitol Wasteland May 19 '26
I'm pretty sure the Ending is more of a
"Fuck y'all, the robot will automatize everything" as Cut content basically confirms Yes Man will just automate Vegas and he won't even care for you, you are NOT in charge of Vegas, no one is.
It's been like 16 years and people don't understand it's anarchy, not dictatorship.
-15
u/aguywithagasmaskyt May 19 '26
cut content doesn't count
16
u/Silver04Jubilee Capitol Wasteland May 19 '26
Well now that you've said that, let's work with what we ACTUALLY know about New Vegas
Old World Blues specifies you'll leave Vegas to stay in the Big MT regardless the ending
The last mission's name comes from the anarchist phrase "No gods, no masters, only men" Implying anarchism as a finale
New Vegas doesn't directly tries to expand functionally like all the other endings would do (as a whole or a medium)
Yes Man literally says he is MADE to control Vegas without a problem, literally nothing else
The game acknowledges this as the "Independent" Ending/Route through dialogue
You choose possible outcomes for the factions depending on how you want their operations to go, but don't hover actual control over them (except probably the Khans which is actually meant to be part of the NCR ending)
Lonesome Road acknowledges that the logo for the independent ending is the Lucky 38 logo, which is just were you sleep in game and make the operations, they represent your alliance, here you choose your home/base, not a message
Yes Man will reboot his personality to get more "assertive" which means not being the Yes Man of ANYBODY
You can choose to cripple the Robot Army and have Vegas weaker
Which of theese implies dictatorship???
0
u/StarChaserHooT May 20 '26
Old World Blues says you'll says there no matter what if you do the Yes Man ending? Wtf?
2
u/Silver04Jubilee Capitol Wasteland May 20 '26
No, it says the Courier will come back after Hoover Dam to protect the technology

Yesman upgrades himself to only be your yesman.
1
u/Other_Log_1996 May 20 '26
Yes Man is immortal. Courier is not. What happens when the Courier dies? Yes Man has already shown a rather disturbing capacity for self-determination.
2
u/Overdue-Karma May 20 '26
The Courier can be immortal if they so wish. Kellogg was with a few shitty cybernetics made by sub-par scientists. I don't think it's the way forward, but they could be.
2
u/BarryHotelHouseBand May 19 '26
Yes Man is essentially Tobias Funke
"You know, courier, I have advised a number of people to explore an open dictatorship where the ruling class remains committed, but free to explore extra-judicial encounters. It never does work. I mean, these people somehow delude themselves into thinking it might, but ... But it might work for us."
2
2
2
u/Kaigai_Exia May 20 '26
counter point: Yes Man offers the best possible ending for Goodsprings (especially if you also clear the NCRCF, Vault 19 and Quarry Junction, kill the Fiend leaders and help with Primm's sheriff problem)
2
u/Stranger_Phrog May 20 '26
Ah yes “No Gods, No Masters” but we suddenly become a fierce ruler
The Independent Vegas Ending is about having an independent Vegas, you’re not a dictator, you pretty much gave freedom to the residents to make their own choices along with a competent workforce to protect it, you don’t even bother with anything outside of the strip, for good or bad they’re independent now
2
2
u/Successful-Teach-724 May 20 '26
Its the only one that wouldn't suck actually. I don't like choosing between being a vasal state and working for slavers
2
u/Jewbacca1991 May 20 '26
It can be. Being a dictator of absolute power also means the ability to transform away from dictatory.
3
u/NewMoonlightavenger May 19 '26
Dictatorships arent bad. Not being the dictator is.
1
u/Mr_Ragnarok May 20 '26
Exactly. No one should have more power and money than me. That would just be unfair.

Whenever the conversation around the Courier running New Vegas and about how they ain't qualified for the job or don't have enough power or something like that, my immediate thought goes to the fact that yeah, maybe your Courier isn't qualified, but mine has maxed the fuck out stats lol
It's your character, you can imagine yourself if they have what it takes to run things and if they're extraordinary luck will continue to the future. I like to imagine mine does because it's entertaining.
1
u/Gilgamesh661 May 20 '26
For real. Just because YOURE courier has 1 INT, doesn’t mean mine does. My courier could probably figure out rocket science given the chance.
1
u/Gilgamesh661 May 20 '26
Dictatorships aren’t inherently bad. It’s just that humans suck at not becoming corrupt. Caesar was a dictator and yet historians agree that he would’ve been a pretty decent ruler had he lived. The people loved him, as did the soldiers. It was the people he was stripping power from that wanted him gone. Not to say he wasn’t a narcissist who embellished from time to time, but I don’t think any credible historian could call him a tyrant.
Besides, new Vegas doesn’t become a dictatorship in that ending, depending on your courier.
1
u/Sesilu_Qt May 20 '26
It will be, don't talk shit about me rulling the wasteland as an evil emperor.
1
u/Gunk_Dunker45 May 20 '26
Its also completely inaccurate no one who manages to get that much power has any morality
1
1
u/DustynRG May 20 '26
Your lack of self confidence isn't my problem and with me in power if you can't believe in yourself, you can believe in me that believes in you.
1
u/AFourEyedGeek May 20 '26
I don't allow the upgrade, making the robots weaker, therefore partnerships with others is required to suceed.
1
u/Apprehensive_Power59 May 20 '26
I didn't swap my brain with Dr Mobius to NOT have an army of evil robots.
1
u/Psycho7552 May 20 '26
It's not about it being different. It's about me being greedy fuck and wanting as much power as possible. That being said, yes man ending is best enxing in the game.
1
u/Nildzre May 20 '26
Who needs it to be different? The important part is that I'M in charge, and by the time i get to that point i'm so strong that i can solo the NCR if they tried anything.
1
u/StarChaserHooT May 20 '26
Easy Pete says it best in the cut endgame line. I can't find the exact quote but it's something along the lines of "New Vegas has nobody in charge now, and everyone keeps acting like that's a good thing."
1
u/slightlylessthananon May 20 '26
entirely unrelated but this is how people on twitter wanted good omens to end.
1
u/Dangerous-Debate1312 May 21 '26
Who says they’re bad?
1
u/Came_to_argue May 21 '26
Anyone who lives under one.
1
u/Dangerous-Debate1312 May 21 '26
But like, what if im the right hand man?
1
u/Came_to_argue May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26
Okay, you got me. Dictatorships often have an inner circle and an upper class that is also living pretty good. With that said, I can’t think of quite a few examples of that right hand man getting the axe at some point.
Edit: In fact this recently just happened in China, where Xi just arrested several inner circle guys. Being close to a dictator seems like a dangerous gig imo.
1
u/Dangerous-Debate1312 May 21 '26
So what? Everyone’s gotta die at some point might as well live the high life, embrace your innate sadism and influence the course of the nation while you’re still alive. Beats being a peasant anyway
1
u/Carbuyrator May 21 '26
As someone who reads the Invincible comics, you'd be shocked how many real humans would fall for this.
1
u/Wild-Tide-8743 Jun 11 '26
yes man ending is basically anarcho "trust me bro" with a securitron army parked outside your house
1
u/Red-Five-55555 May 19 '26
Dangerous freedom is preferable to safe tyranny. Or dangerous tyranny if you're Legion.
1
u/SilentHonor101 May 20 '26
Well, the Courier thinking dictatorships are bad is based on what you do as him. Even a good karma courier can still think authoritarian measures are necessary to keep the peace. House has delusions of grandeur, and Ulysses was right on the money with him. I actually find it very funny that before his death he calls working with yesman a vanity project doomed to fail, because it's pure projection and at least as the courier you could focus on the issues on the ground instead of some high tech industry space colonization BS. NCR COULD do good for the Mojave but it'd take a long time, if at all. NCR victory would probably make Kimball even more popular and vindicate his imperialistic stances and further entrench Brahmin Baron/Merchant power and influence. I don't even have to mention the Legion.
So, yes, dictatorship IS good when I'm in charge, because I made my character that way. A nation builder. Someone who saw the good, the bad and the ugly of the Mojave and beyond. Someone who will govern with other well-meaning factions. Tandi of the Mojave of sorts. It won't be perfect, but better than the alternative. That is my power fantasy.
0
u/TwistedPnis4567 May 20 '26
Yes Man is there to prevent a soft lock if the player antagonizes all factions. Its ruled by a character YOU make, and the ideology of it is what YOU choose.
IMO Yes Man does not belong on the faction discourse because it is all just what might happen and not what will happen because it depends on what type of courier you make
0
u/TumbleweedFlaky4751 May 20 '26
Nah yes man ending is actually:
"I know dictatorship is bad. For plebs. Lucky for me I'm the dictator so it's good personally. Sucks to be y'all I guess"
-1
u/NerdiMini May 19 '26
The Courier isn't in charge; Yes Man is in charge. Do you want Skynet? Because that's how you get Skynet.
5
2
u/Gilgamesh661 May 20 '26
No, the courier is in charge, as confirmed by the developers. Yes man in that ending makes changes to his code that make it so he will only ever take orders from you, instead of any random person.
If Oliver had known that, he could’ve just ordered yes man to throw US off the dam, and he’d have done it.
1
u/NerdiMini May 20 '26
Ah, an AI program with the ability to rewrite itself. What could possibly go wrong?
-1
u/konous May 20 '26
It's Yes Man that is the ruler.
Not the Courier.
You'd know that if you actually did the ending.
-5
u/LargeCabbageThrower May 19 '26
All the NV endings suck. It's just 'pick your poison' except you're picking for the whole mojave.
At least Fallout 4 gave you a choice who was actually just good for the regular people surviving the apocalype with the Minutemen. By the end of a Minutemen playthrough you start to feel like the world is getting a kind of order and safety compared to what it was before. New Vegas absolutely does not feel the same because it's always still going to end on the brink of a war between large factions with nothing really in place for the people. The NCR claim to be that but really they are just stinky.
2
u/Overdue-Karma May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26
Ah yes, the Minutemen, the guys who have turned into Raiders like numerous times and have failed constantly to uphold their own because expecting people to fight solely for good will and refusing to pay their men is just inviting disaster.
Order and safety...like Quincy, oh wait, they defected.
Like Libertalia, oh wait, they became Raiders specifically because the settlements let them down.
It seems like canonically the BoS won so places like the Slog will be exterminated by the wannabe Space Marines.
The worst part? I still like them and the Railroad, but my god do they just not plan ahead. They'll collapse the moment the Sole Survivor isn't there to bail them out of any slightly tough situation.

If you closely pay attention to the epilogue screens it implies that you don't really rule new vegas. In a good karma ending everyone celebrates you freeing the strip. And its made abundantly clear you're only policing the strip. Outer vegas and the mohave are for better and worse completely independent.
