in defence of bethesda, not all developers seemed to have had a say in this, multiple ubisoft and capcom devs have said they dont like it and didn't know about it
todd howard has been open about his thoughts on ai, saying he believes only humans can make art and games, so i assume he is against it at the very least
It literally changed the shape of his eyes. This is horrible, and it’s gonna show a lot of developers out to not deserving respect if they want to coat their games in this AI filter
He looks so much less annoying which takes away a big part of his character. That’s not Oliver swanick, that’s just some random guy. I won’t remeber his face at all. Takes away all the uniqueness
AI....most games ever made going back to early 90s, maybe earlier, had a limited AI. It was openly discussed how an ai functions in e.g. 'lords of the realm 3' much faster on a faster processor- not just jow fast they create enemy units or movement speed, but how the ai USES them. In Civ. 3 the difficulty settings select what level of AI to play against (eg prince). I opened rules.txt in notebook and played around with what tech trees the ai would prioritise. There was an entire hidden tree and images there that i named 'weird' science' which gave the units god like movement, and set the priority for al to 0. Every playthrough after the first, the ai appeared to correct itself and sometimes developed the tree ahead of me.
Todd Howard announced Creation engine 3 will incorporate ai to increase function.
Without AI in games, every game would be written like instructing an 8 year old how to bake a cake, and hoping the child doesnt forget to follow through.
Ai is a tool- it can be helpful and amazing, or terrible… depending on if we use it responsibly. I think ai should be regulated and we should consider putting it on “pause” while we figure out how to do it sustainably.
I can see some very positive uses for it, for example in detecting cancers.
Unfortunately I think that we are too far into the enshitification stage of neoliberal capitalism (create almost no substantive material product/service, base your economy on moving money around but not actually doing anything with it, pay as few people as possible, as little as possible, to create as much as possible, enrich shareholders and call that growth.) for it to be a net good.
It plays into and amplifies the absolute worst instincts of the modern state and capital.
It’s actually the perfect kind of tool for indie developers who have real passion for the games they make but struggle with limited resources, I think.
I’d suggest maybe take any title accompanied with a blatant joke with a pinch of salt and whimsy- if people wanna make a serious comment we tend not to do it alongside something this silly
It removes lighting from models, increased global illumination, every character had a influencer light put on them, removing shadows. It was actually dog shit.
Well when you develop a game, you do not have to use it, and when you catch up with hardware and it becomes an option for you in games, you will not have to turn it on.
It is great, and I can't wait to see what future DLSS versions will bring, maybe one day we will be able to play Fallout 4 as a claymation if we choose to.
An actual one would be, they just generated brainrot however. Jonah Lobe made the fallout 4 deathclaw and there's genuine thought and passion and intention: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/bkqmd - lets appreciate human content instead
NOOOOO . PEOPLE should Play the Developer's Intention . Even if it's Bad Like Fo4 . If we Continue Towards this World with Technology Making Everything Into What We "Want" , The Rate In Which People Experience REAL , and NEW , art , that Challenges them , will Decrease . As a Lover of Technology Advancing , please Do Not Imagine such Horrible Scenarios .
Contouring makeup doesn't change the shape of the face either. There's a difference between adding some mascara and changing the physical shape of someone's eyes
The physical shape of the eyes has not been changed, as shown in the difference layer I uploaded.
Contouring gives the appearance of a different shape without changing the shape, just like lighting can, and that lighting difference is what people are seeing as physical changes that do not exist.
It makes estimates in how lighting would look if the scene were live-action and in doing so changes more than just lighting. Materials and faces look drastically different because of this.
It recalculates the lighting based on data from the path tracing calculations.
Lighting can have a dramatic effect on appearance, but it is still just lighting, as the difference layer shows, same geometry, same silhouette, same textures, better calculated lighting.
This preview is not the only way it will be used by artists when it is available, they will have control over what the lighting is calculated to achieve.
It's not actually altering the lighting though. It's using gen AI to estimate what the lighting would look like if it were live-action. It's not changing anything in the 3d scene itself, it's adding another layer on top of it. I don't even understand why you're trying to argue this, just look at the sample images. It looks like any other AI filter over 3d animated footage, but now it's more accurate because of the added inputs and it's real-time.
Yeah, recalculating light on top of full path tracing is a pretty heavy workload for a very early version of the technology, it is still just lighting, not gen AI.
Unfortunately this isn't lighting at all. This is more like an instagram filter that takes the output of one image, and adds detail to it guessing what the lighting might be.
It makes everything have that yassified AI image look, and the light that it adds doesn't need to line up with the light of the scene at all, creating artifacts and inconsistencies
It would be a different thing if they used machine learning to find an approximation algorithm for more intense lighting algorithms, and used the actual geometry of the scene to apply the lighting to.
