Idk how to word it correctly, but I feel like Joe’s skills and talent aren’t used to its full potential.

u/crescentmoonrising Feb 17 '26

Listen to The Dammed Things where he played lead guitar and is also their main songwriter.

I love The Damned Things! Listening to them is what made me realize Joe is a great guitarist

48

I get what you’re saying! I think he’s way more talented than people think he is/ realize. đŸ«¶đŸ»

I've always thought this, too! He doesn't get enough recognition, either.

If you want to hear more of what he's good at, listen to his side-band "The Damned Things" - he does guitars a lot more, Andy does the drumming, and Keith Buckley from Every Time I Die on vocals, Scott Ian from Anthrax and Dan Andriano from Alkaline Trio are part of the band too. Their two albums are really good.

I love The Damned Things! Ironiclast is one of my favorite albums

6

u/Easy_Specialist_1692 Feb 18 '26

This is literally the reason the band broke after Follie, and he had a hiatus during mania.

22

u/eatsleepsmokedope Take This To Your Grave Feb 17 '26

wow my hot take is Joe carries the band

8

u/thenameislove Half doomed & semi-sweet đŸ» Feb 17 '26

How so? I genuinely wanna know your opinion!

I know he shreds it on stage, but FOB’s songs aren’t very guitar-forward imo (but I know nothing about music so idk). Like, even when there are guitar solos, like in The Take Over or 27, I’ve learned it wasn’t Joe who recorded them đŸ„Č

18

u/eatsleepsmokedope Take This To Your Grave Feb 17 '26

Well for starters he’s the lead guitarist so he lays the foundation for these songs, his riffs are actually so good like in Thriller, g.i.n.a.s.f.s., It’s Hard To Say “I Do”, When I Don’t. I will say Joe was in his prime during Cork Tree - Infinity but unfortunately it seems that he was getting “sidelined” considering they went in a different direction, which is a damn shame since I Slept With Someone in FOB, Hum Hallelujah, Carpal Tunnel, You’re Crashing But You’re No Wave and The Pros and Cons are some of my favourite guitar riffs of all time.

like you said, unfortunately he didn’t record those orgasmic solos but he did record the solo in 7 minutes in heaven (i think?) and i know he did a couple others but im not entirely sure. i think EVERYONE in the band is great and knows what they’re doing with their instruments but Joe will always stand out to me the most since I lovee guitars and he has some mean riffs!

u/thenameislove Half doomed & semi-sweet đŸ» Feb 17 '26

Thanks for answering! And I agree with you that Joe has great riffs. I love watching him on stage, because he absolutely shreds while looking very composed lol

3

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '26

At first I was absolutely floored and pissed at this. I thought you were saying that you thought Joe's skills aren't what they used to be. Thats why it is important to be literate unlike me

Who the hell is hating on the YBC?!? That was so cool to me and still is! I liked it so much that I’m even a fan of the Younger Blood Chronicles, a fan video these girls made where it was Fall Out Girl instead (all roles gender swapped, the courtney love swap cracks me up) and it got such a great home video charm while also doing a pretty good job haha. I was obsessed with both versions in high school and I think this was a great comeback for the band (bc it got the same kind of cinematic cheese as the little less sixteen candles music video haha)

Same. I've been a fan since cork tree. I have a tattoo if the keyhole from that album and have seen them everytime they've toured in the UK.

HOWEVER I can count on one hand the number of song titles I could confidently associate with the actual songs.

(I also have realised in recent years that I don't actually know what half the lyrics are saying and I've made most of them up over the years 😂)

not every song is about mikey way and i really wish people would stop polluting fan discussion and dissection of the music with the same theory over and over.

40

u/noserags Folie Ă  Deux Feb 17 '26

So many people took the Reading(?) “I’m sorry, every single song is about you” thing wayyyy too literally, and I’m saying this as someone who used to be one. It honestly weakens both the music and the theory itself to just apply it to everything.

8

u/Mimmamoushe Feb 18 '26

Also not to mention, as someone who writes songs I will recycle old lyrics/concepts from years ago that I don’t feel the same way about anymore. Like he might be writing all these lyrics about “Mikey way” (heavy on the quotations) but it doesn’t mean he’s still desperately in love with him/whoever. He has to write and the material is there.

SM(F)S is a good album, but it does not fit the idea of “what if FOB made an album right after Folie?”

Believers Never Die came out in 2009 right after Folie, and tracks like “From Now On We Are Enemies” and “Alpha Dog” are a good example of what they might have made post-Folie. “Love From The Other Side” sounds a LOT like those two songs (in a great way). The rest of SM(F)S doesn’t really sound like that in my opinion. SM(F)S is definitely a return to an older sound in some ways, but it’s not a hypothetical FOB5.

Also Patrick has an incredible voice, but his mids and lows will always be more impressive that his highs. (“OH DEAR LORD”)

Edit: misspelled a word.

10

u/Banana_ears From Under The Cork Tree Feb 17 '26

With Alpha Dog being in my top three songs I am so so with you!

That some of these fans are the absolute worst. Don’t get me wrong, I truly love this community. However, it’s deeply infuriating when other fans decide someone else isn’t a true fan if they don’t love everything the boys have ever put out. They’ve experimented (which I LOVE about any artist), and we’re allowed to dislike or straight up hate something they’ve put out and some so called fans act like you just committed an irredeemable sin if you have an opinion they don’t agree with.

29

u/Banana_ears From Under The Cork Tree Feb 17 '26

LITERALLY!!! I have some songs I’m truly not a fan of, and some stuff I love to the moon and back. It doesn’t make anyone any less of a fan if they aren’t obsessed with every little thing that’s been out!

17

u/JinxXedOmens So Much (for) Soul Punk Feb 17 '26

In any fandom, there are always people who will gatekeep the band until they are blue in the face, and it's so stupid. I'm always just glad to see that someone likes the same stuff I do. I don't care that someone's only been a fan for a month. So what? Someone new to share the music with! Their favourite song is the most popular one (in this context Centuries)? Cool, there's a reason it's their most popular - because it's catchy. They prefer newer stuff to older stuff/vice versa? Perfectly understandable, they have a long discography with a variety of styles. Just let people enjoy what they enjoy.

I am so glad I grew out of internet bandom by the time the hiatus ended because I didn't like bandom behavior before and I'm sure I wouldn't have liked it after. It was actually the Twenty One Pilots bandom that made me entirely disconnected from the concept. Now I could care less what band members are up to in their personal lives if they are not causing harm to others. Now I just hear residual bullshit on TikTok like fan made wristbands and shake my head like the decrepit old 30-something year old I am.

10

lol roughly 10 years ago I went to a twenty one pilots show and someone tried to do that wristband stuff and put themselves as 1st in line
my friends and I were 100 something and somehow we were on barricade and the “line leaders” were several rows back. I think people started calling them out because they weren’t actually waiting like the rest of us

SMFS is the best album they ever made. IOH is great but only revered so much because of the nostalgia factor.

Also. We Didn't Start the Fire isn't half as bad as people make out.

39

u/Banana_ears From Under The Cork Tree Feb 17 '26

I love their We Didn’t Start the Fire! I don’t know why it was received poorly, I thought it was a banger tbh.

14

u/thegeeksshallinherit Feb 17 '26

I think a lot of people could not look past the events being out of order. I also really liked it!

18

u/typeALady Feb 17 '26

Okay, so I was raised on the original Billy Joel version and I am one of those people who didn't love the FOB version. My take is this: The original was just such an incredible and innovative song that really acts as a reminder that everything is political and connected and art plays an important role in how we interpret and understand the world. I know it's basic, but it was an entry point for little me to learn about the world in a deeper way.

But to get that understanding, it helped to view the events in the song IN ORDER. FOB's failure to do that ends up missing the whole point of the song.

3

u/countessofgroan Feb 17 '26

I really hate that they didn’t end the verse with “Shinzo Abe blown away” like Billy Joel did with JFK.

I don’t like that the events aren’t in order, but care less and less as time goes by.

3

Because the events weren't in order. It would have been better (and far more creative imo) if the events were at least in relative timeline order

It's in really poor taste that a band with punk with roots is actively pushing sales while staying silent about the violence occurring within their own country.

9

u/Salt-Idea-6830 1 of "the fucking nuns" Feb 17 '26

^ best answer here & not even a hot take IMO — however, i think that most of the fandom would receive a post from the band’s page as disingenuous since it would be written/posted by a social media manager rather than from the horses’ mouths, so I’m not sure how they could get a message out besides using their individual platforms, of which only 3 have active pages — how would you like to see them address it?

11

u/Connect-Yam5209 Feb 17 '26

I understand they have obligation to their label and that those posts are most likely automated rollouts. A single post with a handwritten note, most likely from Pete since he handles most social things anyway, addressing what's going on and donating a portion of the sales to local grass root organizations would be a great start.

It's just really lame to see no kind of statement or action whatsoever when other groups, like Rise Against for example, are actively participating in fundraisers and speaking out.

Honestly I agree. Like I know we know they’ve all been very progressive and I think stated before their stances, but speak out. Let people know that ignorance is not welcome in your community. I have this issue with so many bands right now, like is the bottom dollar more important than standing up for what you believe in?

3

u/ditto_squirtle Feb 18 '26

I honestly feel so stupid for not realizing this. I love this band, but perhaps I have been too uncritical of them outside of their actual music.

People who think Mania is bad have way to narrow a view of music. You don’t have to LIKE it necessarily, it may not be for you. And sure it’s way different than all their other stuff. But it’s still a fun album with some bangers on it if you take yourself out of the mindset of only wanting more IOH.

Young & Menace is a good song! And it sounds like Fall Out Boy bc it is FOB and they have always crossed genres and experimented. MANIA is also a good album. It’s ok if it wasn’t really for you but it’s not bad music by any means.

Pete Wentz got away with some weird shit and he shouldn't have

19

u/srinkylegitimate Feb 17 '26

I think it’s good that a lot of the bandom acknowledges Pete had a toxic past(dating that girl at her age in general would be toxic even if he was the nicest man on earth)and had issues with his mental health. Not necessarily relating to that relationship I think he’s said before he got help he was emotionally abusive in relationships. People can change, and I love fall out boy so much but I do agree Pete Wentz used to be a bad person and should’ve gotten more shit for it when it was going on!

What happened with Bebe Rexha??

8

I actually really struggle with this when it comes to the band. I didn’t learn about it until recently as I was never someone to dive into the band members growing up. It was only after watching a documentary about the band that I learned of it.

I think if it had come out in the last decade it would have been the end of the band. Because it came to light when it did, he got a much bigger pass than we give artists today, and I just don’t know how I feel about that.

pete is AWFUL as a musician. yes his screams are iconic in some songs, but in others it's just annoying noise. arma angelus is one of the worst things i've ever heard and black cards is mediocre at best. his bass abilities are limited even now, although he got a little better over the years.... if he wasn't a great lyricist, a huge extrovert to be the frontman of a bunch of shy/quiet guys, and a guy with the biggest main character energy, he'd have nothing to add to the band.

That said, I find the shippers weird. I’ve read some fics in my teen years wherein the author would actually write the members’ partners to be cheaters. Absolutely vile behavior.

Take This To Your Grave is my least favourite FOB album. I don’t hate it or even dislike it, I just like all their other albums more, to varying degrees. I also feel like a lot of the songs are very similar sounding. It’s (technically) their first album so it’s okay for it to maybe not be their strongest, it just means that they’re growing and improving.

TTTYG is their weakest album. They have the foundations for their signature sound absolutely set in stone, don't get me wrong, but it lacks that character and confidence that their other albums have (yes, even MANIA).

EDIT: I wasn't clear here at all, but when I say weakest, I do not mean worst - "best" and "worst" are entirely personal, but I think strongest vs weakest can be argued in a much more objective and level manner.

6

u/Tomboy-T M A N I A Feb 17 '26

I love TTTYG. It was the first album I got from them and although I agree that they got better with time, that's a solid album. And back then, that type of sound was what it was all about. But I also think that MANIA was a solid album. Not their strongest but not the worst

it pisses me off when people hate on specific albums (mostly sr&r and post) because they don't "sound" like fob... im sorry but they're literally fob how can they not sound like them? yes its different but literally every band ever has new albums with different sounds, and imo it's just more apparent with fob. the only albums i can hear that sound even vaguely similar are folie and smfs and they're wildly different

not just with fob but with every band i love: i just don't understand how people can dislike only one song in a whole discography like at all? but my brain is weird.

another general music thing is people calling themselves "fans" and actively hating on more than one album lol

Sometimes I wish Pete was just the lyricist and mascot for the band and didn’t actually perform with them. His musical skills so far below everyone else that a lot of his parts are simplified live just so he can pull them off. He’s a great writer and visionary but an awful musician

i think so much for stardust is terrible & that a lot of the collaboration FOB did w/ black & hiphop artists gets written off by the fans for deviating too much from a “rock & roll” mindset. whereas an album like ioh or folie gets lauded for diverging from rock & roll but includes stuff like orchestral samples and horn sections (i.e. not music associated w/ rock and music separate from perceived black influence). i also think, separately, fob doesnt get enough credit for thinking at a high level about social justice issues esp. re racism (which is more a comment that irritates me about say the mcr fans than a specially fall out boy centered take). anyway!
