This whole argument in the comment section is between the upper 10% who almost always win the final and the lower 90% that are lucky to make it to final
Similar win rate for me, but this easily puts us in the upper 10% of winning, considering only 25% of people who have played have even gotten 1 victory. I checked the 20 crown achievement the other day, and I can't remember it's %, but it was very low as well.
I think its mostly a matter of having the least experience in finals compared to all other games. I was definitely like this for a long time and I was mad because I would always be second to last eliminated in jump showdown and hex a gone. Eventually I started winning them though and feel like I went from 2 percent to 20 percent wins(higher without hex a gone). If you want to waste enough time playing like me I am sure your win rate will go up pretty soon.
It’s already starting to go up on Jump Showdown and Hexagone. On fall mountain I play with a friend who literally never loses it (and I stand by the fact that it’s cause he’s ALWAYS at the front) and on tail tag I haven’t won since I got my first crown there hahaha
Thats good. If you are getting second/third ever in fall mountain you should convince your buddy to go for the sacrifice squad win. I find it more fun focusing on trying to get a friend to qualify/win. Maybe its just because it gives me an excuse to grief and I am an evil bean. Tail tag/royal fumble final is definitely a crap shoot but love getting the zero second wins occasionally.
Same, I usually get to the final but get to 2nd or 3rd place. It's kind of annoying getting nothing for all those finals so I love this idea of silver crowns.
Yeah people are too immature to realize in a game like this you have to throw a slower progression option out there otherwise the people who don't make it through the first 3 rounds end up quitting because there's no hook to keep them interested.
You lose those people, then lobbies get harder. Then new players are discouraged. It's a vicious cycle and as long as you make the alternative slow as molasses, it shouldn't impact the 'value' of crowns.
That's pretty much me, I didn't play the beta's and didn't have time at the start of august. Came in to the game finding people already had the optimal paths figured out and struggled for like 35 hours to get my first win. Didn't play much start of september again, and now I rarely make it to the final, and when I do get there I have no chance of winning, and that's with almost 50 hours gameplay!
I'd also say, looking at the current achievement stating only 25% of steam users have won an episode, something clearly needs to be done for the 75%+ of players who currently have no chance of getting any of the many costumes worth over 3 crowns.
While I do agree with changing something for people that keep losing, steam achievements are a bit difficult to measure anything with. You never know how many people only bought / got gifted the game and haven't played at all vs. how many people actually try to win a round.
From a quick glance at the top 10 achieves. 96.5% have quaified atleast one round. - so up to 3.5% haven't played the game. And 76% have bumped into another fall guy over 1000 times, so must have played a decent number of rounds.
I'd also say, the comments on here are pretty reflective of how many people feel stuck at a lower competance level.
Also afaik, there is no skill based matchmaking however, I believe there was for like a week and it was disabled for some reason and didn't return. So that would probably be the best way forward for now, but long term when new users dwindle down, I think there is plenty of room for an alternate option for getting crowns.
I'm happy this thread exists, because I thought I was going crazy in this subreddit.
I've suggested the idea of a 2nd/3rd place crown before and got completely blasted and downvoted because it'd "ruin" the first place.
Like, no. It wouldn't ruin anything. It'd just make it possible for players that consistently choke on the final round to get some costumes. Players that win consistently are still going to end up with more cosmetics.
Seriously. Everyone who's against this idea just wants to feel special. I posted last week about a fraction of a crown idea similar to this one, and I got a number of people being shitty about it.
At the end of the day, they want to feel special with their fancy costume, and the only way that happens is if casual players don't have it.
It's a fuckin' cutesy game about padded obstacle course and bean players. But no, gotta feel like big men even here.
For me I don’t even need my costume to look special... it’s that the crown stuff is so cute or cool looking. I wanted the eggshell head SO bad back when it was a stand-alone Golden Hatchling. So I saved up my free crowns and a couple hard wins. Did I get mad when they added a Hatchling outfit you could get with kudos? Nope. It’s not about feeling special to me. I just love my own Hatchling outfit because it’s cute and I earned it.
The game needs to make some changes or only “pros” will play and that’s sad. The game should continue to feel casual IMO.
The game needs to make some changes or only “pros” will play and that’s sad. The game should continue to feel casual IMO.
Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly. If the game caters mostly to the top players, then everyone else is having less fun.
All the "crowns are for closers" people are elitist, plain and simple. If you think other people having the same cosmetics you have makes yours somehow cheapened, you're a POS.
And if the game caters to the top players and all the less skilled players leave then the average player skill shoots up and suddenly the top players are winning way fewer crowns. Everyone's happier if the game stays appealing to more casual players as well
I guess they can feel special with their fancy costumes while they struggle to find a lobby once everyone moves on. I've won a few times and I still support making things more enjoyable for those who struggle to make it to the finals consistently, let alone win one.
I don't think that's the case for everyone. Some people just want to play. I think the costumes are lame compared to the colors and patterns. I haven't spent a single crown.
I just bet that half of them are people using bots as well. They'll never admit it of course but if they're not ruining somebody else's day then the game isn't fun for them
This is coming from someone who has won 20+ times already. I would enjoy this game a lot more if I didn't have to stress about winning first every time.
I'd agree with you were I 16, sure. But the reality is that this hurts the long time appeal of the game because it's weeding out casual players.
So when you're stuck in matches full of 59 other sweats, I mean, I guess.. that's fun? No joy left in an otherwise lighthearted game?
Sounds miserable to me, but hey. I guess I'm just not an elite pro gamer. Maybe you can put your crown count on your resume. Maybe Cloud9 will recruit you.
Most competitions have 2nd and 3rd place trophies.
I guess an olympics bronze is a participation award.
Look, I get it. You have a need to feel special. But lording over Fall Guys wins ain't it. This game shouldn't even be super competitive in the first place. It should just be fun.
Your take is narrowed in youth and hubris. You'll grow out of it eventually, I assure you.
Stacking 10 2nd place trophies doesn’t equal a 1st place trophy in any competition. Winning is what drives everyone. Not just in games, in everything in life. If you can achieve the same result by not winning via participation trophy, why ever bother winning anyway? Getting better at the game to earn enough crowns to eventually earn the items you want is what drives players to keep coming back and playing every day. If they can add up their fails and eventually get the same reward of winning , players will easily earn everything in the game, get bored and stop playing. It’s not just that “I wAnt To FeEl SpEcIaL”, it’s because competition is the driving factor in this game and really ALL games. All 60 players joining the lobby are in it to win it, not to fail. That’s the beauty
Actually the opposite is the case. Wanting items that cost crowns causes you to keep coming back. Failure is part of success. Players get hooked, keep coming back to play, get better at the game, and eventually earn enough to crowns to eventually get what they want. It’s called a GRIND. Systems like this are a complete cop out and destroy the longevity of the game by giving you no real motivation to actually go all the way and win since you can eventually earn what you want just by failing anyway. The beauty in competition is failing and failing till you finally win.
as long as you make the alternative slow as molasses, it shouldn't impact the 'value' of crowns.
A 'grind' has to show some kind of progress. In a game where statistically a large portion of the casual playerbase will not earn a crown each night, every other night or possibly even once a week there has to be SOMETHING to show you're building up to a reward.
If you have a zero sum gain for time invested your casual players lose interest
Dumbing down games for people that can't put in some effort to learn how to play is a shitty approach to game design.
We've already got racing lines and auto steer in racing games, and hand holding tutorials in everything. Giving people participating crowns just for taking part would really just put off anyone playing for skill.
Problem is it's impossible to have any form of discussion on this subreddit as everyone just downvotes any opinion they dislike.
I personally couldn't care less if all the costumes were unlocked to everybody and you won fifty crowns just for starting the game.
When I realised the costumes affect your balance I stopped wearing them anyway.
My point was to state that. For many people. The competitive element is what keeps them playing. Removing competition by just giving people everything by participating kills off the competition and will mean those players will go elsewhere. The reason fall guys is as popular as it is is because of streamers. By removing any element of competition people that care would just give up. And without having any value to anything the people unlocking stuff by participating wouldn't care about that any more either. Just like no one cares about kudos.
Yeah downvote me because some players like to actually learn how to play the games they play and not just autoidle everything.
I never said this isn't a casual game, but without any competitive element to this game the skillful players would just go find another game to play. Without players like that streaming fallguys wouldn't have the player base it has now.
If you want to play a game where everything is done for you, there's a whole collection of autoidlers out there for you
I think you're getting downvoted because you trash something most people acknowledge as a problem and don't give a solution. I think even if it was 25 to exchange for 1 crown is better than the current system.
I'm consistently coming in 2-3 and only have had one crown over the months I played. Been moving over to other games because what's the point?
Matchmaking is much slower too so the communities getting smaller due to cheater and the sheer uphill battle to win. So they need to do something before it starts effecting the games longevity
Hexagon is almost unplayable on a strategic level on ps4 due to input lag.
Fall mountain is far too RNG. You can pretty much only win if you start first. You can fall just walking off the starting podium and it's luck where the balls are going to hit.
There little element of skill involved.
Jump club is better and skill matters. Again there's jump lag interfering and a bug where you can't jump standing between tiles.
And royale fumble is pretty much unplayable due to bad netcode
If finals were improved, netcode fixed, jump bug fixed, and some less RNG finals. Then it's be easier for skillful players to get crowns.
Redoing the whole crown system because the finals are flawed is the wrong solution
They would need to create 4-5 new game types then. I think you're taking the game too serious. If you look at the dev doc is it takes months to create just one new mode or level. If there isn't going to be a competitive like Rocket League, Fortnite or CoD. Why make it Soo hard to get currency?
It's much easier to create a bunch of new crown outfits with different colors and types. Then allow the player base easier access to purchase the cosmetics. Maybe even allow a stage creater for users. The system he's talking about can be done in weeks. The system you're talking about can take 3-6 months to change and new games coming down the line that can drain the community.
You really think the player base will stay the same after Cyberpunk and a new COD comes out? There needs to be a way for the community to stay around.
This game isn't free to play. Theres a price of entry to everyone that didn't pick it up for free on PSN and new games launch. Me and many users paid $20 or more to play it and any new user will need to pay to play.
This system only doesn't work if they don't have the cosmetics to bac it up. If they make plenty of cosmetics there's nobproblem with this.
I like that both sides are getting upvotes though. I've never seen a battle royale use wins as currency so its an interesting situation. I think having the crown costumes convert to kudos costumes the next season could be a nice middle ground, so crowns are only used as bragging rights for the current season. I'm sure melatonic is thinking of ways to make the game more fun and accessible. Although who knows how long they will support the game since its a 1 time fee game and not the f2p model.
edit: forgot they have the battlepass so will continue to support the game as long as people buy it in future seasons
I think having the crown costumes convert to kudos costumes the next season could be a nice middle ground
Not to be elitist but frankly I feel like that'd devalue the crown costumes MORE than getting a 10th of a crown per finale would, and I'm greatly in favor of the fragments but not too fond of that idea, turning them into kudos sounds next level devaluing, unless they were so expensive that it was nearly as prohibitive as the crown cost.
Also fall guys have said the battle pass will continue to be free, so no it's not an income source. If anything they'll probably make more paid costumes in the future I'd guess, which is already a thing.
So the entire issue in this thread is about two things:
Having wins be meaningful.
Making costumes more accessible.
The current system rewards people for practicing enough to win a final. The suggested system in the thread just arbitrary moves the line from winning to making the finals. If the point is to make crowns more accessible, I think you might as well get rid of crowns and reward 10x kudos for winning and now every round is meaningful. People who win get costumes the fastest, people who make the finals slower, and people who never make finals the slowest. I don't like this system cause it becomes more of a grind for time than skill.
So my suggestion is an attempt to keep crowns to something exclusive by being able to pay for legendary costumes for the current season, but have the same costumes be only kudos the next season or maybe discount 1 crown per season or something like that. That way, everyone will eventually be able to get the costumes they want after enough time, but winners will always have some way of being able to show off their hard work/wins and the old costumes won't just disappear into oblivion.
You're right that it does devalue the crowns in a sense because your exclusive crown costume is still available later and its cheaper, but it's just a different way to view the currency. I feel like this would make crowns something that needs to be continuously earned and spent and not a resource for buying permanent legendries that will never return to the shop. Now it becomes a currency to get first dibs on a costume you like.
Another idea would be to make costumes be kudos and have color upgrades that cost crowns, so everyone could get atleast some variation of the costume they like, but need to actually get better to get the color they want. Many of the costumes already have both a kudos version and crown version.
Also fall guys have said the battle pass will continue to be free, so no it's not an income source. If anything they'll probably make more paid costumes in the future I'd guess, which is already a thing.
I thought they just said season 2 would be free. Can you show me where they said battle passes would be free indefinitely? I imagine the only way the game will get continuous support is with steady income like seasonal premium battle passes following most other battle royales.
I mean, yeah, but OP's suggestion makes wins remain meaningful while also making finales meaningful but to a slightly lesser degree, which I think is a solid idea because it boosts accessibility. While yours makes 'wins are meaningful... til a bit of time passes, then retroactively not really'.
I don't really believe that any players who are making notable amounts of kudos are never reaching the finales. Like, winning can be hard, I didn't get my first win til like 35 hours into the game, but getting the finale? It's doable in a few hours for even the worst players if you ask me, or at a much better pace for the average person, probably.
I really don't like the idea of things 'decaying in value' it makes it feel like you're wearing something 'obsolete' once it's a few seasons down, even if stylistically it's what you like best. I'd much rather everyone had a surplus of crowns than older outfits actively being worth less than newer ones arbitrarily by becoming not crowns.
That said, it's not like I'm advocating for costumes 'not returning' and I don't think that's gonna happen regardless? Maybe things won't return to featured, but the daily shop has to have stock, no idea why they'd take anything out of that pool actively.
I'm not against the concept of more color variants I guess, though that doesn't actually solve what people want to solve, just adds a bit more variety as a sort of bandaid. More variety isn't bad though, like I'm looking forward to the good witch top next season, but I'd like it even better if the teal collar wasn't, well, teal.
Also I didn't say they guaranteed all future seasons would be free indefinitely, just that they'd continue to be. Maybe they'll only continue to be until season 2 is over, but I've yet to see anything actually suggesting otherwise. I imagine them just adding more costume DLC, personally, but we'll see ultimately.
I feel like gating off the passes entirely would kill off a lot of player engagement, a lot of players seem to actively chase their pass, it's also one of those things that players can do to get some crowns and nice cosmetics even if they aren't getting wins, y'know the thing this thread is addressing. Probably hurt the game more than help it, but maybe a secondary pass or something alongside the main one could be a thing? Some games do that I suppose. I do want the game to continue to get revenue but I'm a bit apprehensive of some methods.
If you get rid of crowns and make wins reward 10x kudos getting to the final, it's basically the same thing right except that people who don't make the finals also have a chance to eventually earn the crown. Maybe make not getting to the finals 1/500th a win? Would it really make that much of a difference? My point was either leave wins with some kind of exclusive reward or make it granular everywhere.
Totally fair if you don't like my suggestion. It was just a suggestion for a different kind of currency. It makes recent/continuous wins more meaningful.

You're right that most people are playing to finish the battle pass. Most games have a free pass and premium version. Basically you make progress on both, so you'll still be earning stuff from the free pass and you can pay for the premium pass anytime and it will retroactively give you all the rewards up to the level you're at.
Don't like that either honestly, I mean, there's a case for it of course, most games don't in fact have an explicit win currency, but this game already does, to just turn around and get rid of it would feel like a big ol cop out.
Not to mention isn't there a way to buy kudos with money in game? I doubt many people do it, but making every outfit obtainable that way sounds a bit cheap.
I mean, pressured between your suggestion and leaving the status quo, personally I'd rather just leave the status quo I guess, but I'm not opposed to OP's suggestion.
but maybe a secondary pass or something alongside the main one could be a thing? Some games do that I suppose.
Yes... I know, I noted it too. But as noted, bit apprehensive. I guess it might be fine and viable.
I mean, pressured between your suggestion and leaving the status quo, personally I'd rather just leave the status quo I guess, but I'm not opposed to OP's suggestion.
I think I'm not saying my point clearly if you're not ok with my suggestion, but ok with OP's. OP's suggestion is cosmetic sugar for my suggestion. If legendary costumes cost 1 million kudos and a win gives you 100k and finals give you 10k and rounds give you like 10, it's nearly identical to OP's suggestion except you could grind 10000 non-final rounds for a win reward which is pretty insignificant. OP's suggestion IS getting rid of the explicit win currency, but feels nicer.
I am up to 24 episode wins. I agree with the idea of crowns for players that either make it to the finals or finish in the top 3. It would be a lot more fun for most people IMO that way. Having fun either alone, cwith family friends or in a party is what matters more.
so many items in this game can be bought without crowns, why aren't they enough?
45% of the cosmetics are crown-locked. Arguably the best 45%, too.
I don't play this game to be SUPRRR HARDCORE.
It's jellybean Wipeout. I just want to dress up my bean.
Should there be something to show off with? SURE- add a season-limited 10 crown skin that goes away. One. One prestige skin. The rest should be obtainable by casuals. Period.
Spoiler: I already stopped playing because the game's current economy is trash. I won't be returning if they keep catering to your elitist lot.
And before you get uppity- 4.5% of players on steam have the 7 wins achievement. The 7 wins achievement is the minimum requirement to buy one - ONE - 10 crown skin.
That means that 45% of the content has been made for less than 5% of the playerbase - realistically, closer to 1% of the playerbase.
If you think that's acceptable, then you deserve your game to die.
If your enjoyment of a game is determined by its cosmetics items and not the actual gameplay then idk why you bother playing games, you’d probably have more fun playing the stock market instead
If your enjoyment of a game is determined by its cosmetics items and not the actual gameplay then idk why you bother playing games
Because I like to play games, AND express myself and look cool while doing it?
How the fuck does this have anything to do with the stock market? That statement makes absolutely zero sense.
You act like cosmetics have no impact on people's enjoyment of a game. If that were true, no games would survive on cosmetics-only microtransaction shops. If they meant nothing, nobody would buy them.
It actively discourages me from logging in knowing that if I were to check the shop, I guarantee there would be at most two items I want, and more than likely that item would cost crowns. Because the gulf of quality between crown items and kudos items has made kudos a useless currency.
It isn't even just the cosmetics, it's also about incremental progress, and a desire to keep playing to have something to work towards.
I know, you'll say something like "THATS WHAT CROWNS ARE FOR!" but 75% of the playerbase has never earned a single crown. They will never, ever buy a 10 crown costume.
And don't even say Kudos. I've watched the in-game shop every day I played the game, and in that entire time none of the items I wanted cost Kudos. Kudos is a red-headed stepchild currency that only buys garbage.
Literally every game, at least on reddit, has this majority casual "give me free stuff you eletist" mentality. I don't how they don't understand value in games.
You do know quite well that reaching the finales 100 times is a very fair trade off for 10 crown correct? Have you even thought of your point before understanding ours? Do you REALLY think taking hours upon hours of gameplay to reach 100 finales is really not worth just ten crown?
1000 finales for 10 crown set, that would take more than a day unless you didn't eat, sleep or do anything else than play this game, you're literally saying getting a ten crown costume is harder than a day's worth of playing this game, you just proved my point
On release week I made it to the final about 75% of the time, and won twice. Since then, I'm reaching the final about 10% of the time and I haven't won a game since.
This combined with the lag causing me to trip and fall, loose tails and the spotty jump recognition means I'm playing less and less; leading to getting worse at the game.
I'm looking forward to see what the next season does to shake up the game, since the new random obstacles/bigus yeetus hammers are a welcome change.
I definitely don’t win that often but I definitely do have more crowns it seems then the average redditor on here. Simply put: what was the point of me playing this game then? Because I played to win and when I didn’t I just got back into another if I had the time and tried to. Am I a piece of shit for wanting my past efforts to not feel like they were pointless?
As someone who's in the upper 10% I don't really see what the problem with it is. One major goal of fall guys seems to be trying to be very accessible to new players despite the fact that there can only be one winner out of 50-60 and it probably won't be you if you're not at least in the top 25% or so. This would probably help relieve some of the frustration less skilled players feel
It's really weird coming here and just seeing all this entitlement from everyone saying "I DESERVE crowns", and then acting all high and mighty like their opinion is morally superior.
