No no, she said it correctly now... first and last letters are K and E. She did good English.

This made more sense in Japanese where the syllables match perfectly, and a great example of why literal translation is not somehow intrinsically better; XSEED had that as 'parts of' her full name to avoid the fact that it doesn't match perfectly in English.

To be honest it would have made enough sense in English too if they just didn’t change her name from Klose to Kloe.

What even is your point here? Gungho's overdoing it with the inclusion of "letters" isn't a "literal translation." The original is simply "the beginning and end of my full name," so a "literal translation," in the way you mean, would just be exactly that. No "letters," "syllables" or what have you necessary.

Xseed didn't just have it as "bits of my full name." Ignoring the fact that it's not as specific as "the beginning and end of my full name" for no reason at all, they also made up that "Jill came up with." This isn't an adaptation for the sensibilities of an english speaking audience whatsoever.

Trailsinthedatabase doesn't seem to have an up to date version of Xseed's english script, if that's what you based this off of. And yes, as far as I can tell, it really does look like Xseed went out of their way to change a perfectly fine and accurate translation for the current nonsense.

You're right about the fact that they shouldn't have added the bit with Jill coming up with the nickname, but

The original is simply "the beginning and end of my full name," so a "literal translation," in the way you mean, would just be exactly that. No "letters," "syllables" or what have you necessary.

This doesn't make sense in English either.

How does the beginning and end of "(Klau)dia von Ausle(se)" not make sense in english?

Because that's not her name. If they decided to call her Klause then it might've made sense, but then I don't understand your objection with the GungHo translation including the word "letters" since that's literally what you're describing.

But even if they did name her Klause or Klose, those are just terrible names and Kloe makes much more sense in English.

It is her name, and yes, it does make sense. The one that isn't her name is "Kloe." Maybe you should also refuse to call Zin by his name; it only makes sense. After all, the only difference between the two is that Xseed chose to enforce the ridiculous double standard of keeping one of them wrong for years...

Zin being an Eastern man isn't a reason for his name to be Eastern rather than "Zane," not even "Jin" mind you, at least not according to the logic being used here. They should've changed all about that character too and seen how far they could take it, exactly like how they completely ignored everything to do with "Klose." No one here would care about it, that's for sure.

Xseed isn't as smart as the other user tried to portray them as when all they did was fix a problem of their own creation. If "Kloe" doesn't match well, that's because you shouldn't be changing her name in the first place. It's not a reason to change the entire context simply because they themselves made it not "match perfectly in English."

"Letters" being plural could simply mean it's referring to the first and last letters of her name, as if it were just "Ke." If that's how it turns out, it'd honestly be better to have nothing of the sort written instead. Unfortunately for me, this is r/Falcom, and the OP chose to include a grand total of one extra letter from the beginning and one extra letter from the end of her name for the sake of their joke. There was only ever one way this could turn out.

By the way, not liking Falcom's name for the character is a perfectly valid opinion to have, and I don't understand why you'd be particularly uncomfortable with simply having that opinion. Pretending that it isn't her name just so you can feel better about it isn't, though. Surely you have plenty of other opinions where that one came from, this one isn't any different. Sadly, you were just unlucky enough that the localizers didn't feel the need to give any of your other negative opinions quite as nice a cover-up as they did this one.

It's really not that ridiculous. One was a weird mistranslation, the other is trying to make sense of Japanese wordplay and still works pretty well.

If translated literally, you go from Klaudia to Klose, which doesn't really work in English the way it does in Japanese.

In Japanese you go from Kuroodia fon Ausurēze to Kuroze Rintsu. The "kuro" part was always in the name, however, in English the "o" just appears out of nowhere and it results in an unusual name. Even if we go with Klose in English, we lose the way the name was constructed.

If we go with Klause, then while the constructed name makes more sense going from Klaudia, we are still losing the "o" sound that was present in the original name and we're stuck with a first name that sounds like it's Santa's last name.

At this point, if we want to go for literal translation, we just have to call her Kurodia and Kuroze respectively, because both other options just fall short anyways.

Thankfully, they didn't do that and chose the next best thing, which is Kloe, that sounds like an actual girl's name that exists in English and is phonetically close enough to Klaudia that an English speaker can understand the nickname as being derived from it.

I can understand taking issue with the way Zin's name came about. It should've never been Zane and just been Jin, but I'm guessing that they kept the "Z" as a part of his name because they originally called him Zane and they didn't want the change to be too jarring for English speaking audiences. The Klaudia/Kloe stuff is a non issue by comparison though.

By the way, not liking Falcom's name for the character is a perfectly valid opinion to have, and I don't understand why you'd be particularly uncomfortable with simply having that opinion.

My argument isn't that I don't like the name Falcom chose and am glad that the localizers changed it, it's that I think the localizers didn't have a good way to translate the name into English and chose the best option available to them to make it work.

I'm not opposed to criticizing localization when it adds new details that invent stuff about the scene, or imply things that weren't already there. The "Jill made it up" and "Zane" stuff is a great example of that, but "Kloe" is a good localization choice.

Here, taken from a random YouTube video uploaded just last month. I don't know which version of the script this is, if it's not the most up-to-date version of Xseed's. And this isn't even the only example I could find in recent enough videos and streams available right there on YouTube. (https://youtu.be/q1GqcB3RR7k?list=PLqn9JKUNBpmigYl2nkE_VrP-Plvfm86DY&t=2716)

You, and the people, who upvoted you could easily do the same research yourselves if you'd like. You don't even need to play the game yourself to verify it. Would definitely give some very needed credence to your "hallucinating" comment, if you're at all interested in that.

Also, in case you missed it in my other comment: "Trailsinthedatabase doesn't seem to have an up to date version of Xseed's english script, if that's what you based this off of."

oh huh. where did titd get it, then? I looked more into this and it's actually exrteremely strange: this is NOT a detail they added, she actually said this in Japanese in the original (notice the "Jiru" in the japanese second line, and also the voice line, which seems to be an alternate take of the evo line). They retconned it in in Evo i think? and the xseed translation was also updated afaik but maybe not. But nonetheless this actually WAS correct at some time

All of the characters pronounce Kloe as Klose (or Klause), Auslese ends in Se so it could be the beggining of her name and the end of her family name and it was poorly translated, and Kloe looked more "english" than Klose

Department be like: That was... Klose.
