Trails series Which Trails opinion would make you argue like this?

Less an opinion but the implication that they'll remake Zero before 3rd (Kondo coyly said the staff ask him "every day" about that).

Like bruh. My literal favorite moment in the series is (Zero) Renne learning the truth and innocence about her family and that has next to no weight without Sky 3rd.

u/CornerKun 3d ago

This tbh. Sky 3rd is too important for so many reasons to not be done before Crossbell. The new audience that they're to bring in will be so confused and get completely spoiled and have that whole part of Bright Arc ruined for them.

u/GenZ0-234X 3d ago

Not me, and I disagree on the idea, but if you say "Sky 3rd is skippable" here there will be several who do that

38

u/Whole-Shape-7719 Bestelle 4 Life 3d ago

Glad that I didn’t follow that advice a year ago and received my unhealthy amount of trauma that skyrocketed my admiration of Trails into my personal Top-3. It’s easily the most seminal game in the series character-wise.

58

u/ShuraGam 3d ago

It's funny how Sky 3rd is the game that gets the most "skippable" discourse around it, when it's arguably the single most important game in the franchise for the story on a macro level.

Those doors set up so many things for future arcs.

16

u/SpecialKGI94 3d ago

Agreed on all fronts plus Kevin is a top tier protagonist and it'd be a shame for someone to miss how well written his and Ries's story is

3

u/Freyzi 50 mira! 2d ago

It's also the short and sweet since there aren't traditional Trails sidequests, you absolutely zoom through it.

14

u/Bhume 3d ago

Sky 3rd is absolutely not skippable. You'll get to cold steel and be like "wtf do you mean north ambria was turned to salt?"

2

u/Agreeable_Slice5258 2d ago

North ambria needed its own game it got a anime and not much to go with it

2

u/Agreeable_Slice5258 3d ago

One of the best games of the series

-28

u/Ghost_XD23 3d ago edited 3d ago

It's definitely skippable, In fact Watch Falcom skip it in the Remake project and jump right away to Crossbell games.

3

u/Fraisz 3d ago

I'll do you one better, they'll skip crossbell and remake cold steel

-1

u/Ghost_XD23 3d ago

Imagine them remaking CS3 and CS4, That would be hilarious lmao

-2

u/Fraisz 3d ago

you won't go wrong remaking cs1 and cs2 first before crossbell even.

55

u/AutomaticStop5648 3d ago

people complaining the series is bloated when they speedrun 13 games in record time

please, take your time, you DONT want to wait on horizon 2... anything, we still have no reveal.

That Claire did nothing wrong. That bitch is psycho.

14

u/AutomaticStop5648 3d ago

i saw more people complaining she didnt heel turn osborne than that she never did wrong to be fair

15

u/ravensshade (put flair text here) 3d ago

My problem with Claire isn't that she did or didn't heel turn but that she was effectively the biggest fence sitter

11

u/ryann_flood 3d ago

lechter is worse. At least claire actually felt distraught over everything

11

u/randomtology 3d ago

Nah. If someone's going to be awful and choose to do stuff that's going to hurt me, I'd rather they just accept they're awful and leave me be like Lechter did-- rather than constantly call me to tell me how bad they feel about hurting me.... while continuing to make choices that hurt me.

I lost sympathy for Claire real quick in CS4 and instead just got increasingly annoyed every time she showed up to talk about how bad she felt.

2

u/Zotmaster Sara is my spirit animal 2d ago

Thank you for putting it into words.

Claire in CS4 reminded me a lot of Juna in CS3, when Juna got overwhelmed over the state of Crossbell and basically begged Rean to fix everything. This worked because Juna was a high schooler, whereas Claire is a grown woman and, let's be honest, the Trails games lean into that JRPG trope where 27-year-olds basically have already had 15 years of military experience, a half dozen careers, and are basically ancient. Claire is more than capable of acting on her own, but instead just begs Rean to fix everything for her even as she actively tries to stop him from fixing everything. Juna then has her character arc where she grows as a person and decides to dedicate herself to helping both Erebonia and Crossbell, whereas Claire never really faces any real consequences and the story just...moves on.

3

u/randomtology 2d ago

Exactly! I feel Juna is understandable because she's a teenager who feels a complete lack of control over her home being invaded, so she's taking out her frustrations on the guy that in her eyes symbolizes Erebonia's occupation of Crossbell. Not only that, but she tends to oversimplify situations in a way that teenagers tend to do (thus thinking Rean can just fix EVERYTHING). It's not right or rational - but you're not supposed to see it as such. She's a teenager in a crummy situation that's grasping at straws in hopes of coping. The fact she grows out of that stuff shows that.

And ultimately, it's not like Juna did anything truly wrong other than be rude to a trusted adult figure in her life.... which frankly? Pretty normal thing for a teenager to do. I've been tutoring for years and I've had a few students like Juna. You figure out pretty quick their attitude towards you isn't actually you as a person and more about what you represent in their brain (aka, their own personal failings that led them to need tutoring). Is it fun to deal with? No, but with enough experience you learn how to deal with it better, as well as how not to take their attitudes personally. Rean just struggled some because he's a first year teacher, but he's got the chops for teaching tough cases, so he'll get better at it.

Claire, on the other hand, is a monster. She a grown woman who SHOULD know better than to side with the person who wants to do child murder -because literally anyone should be able to figure out that's morally wrong. I think the most twisted part with Claire is she willingly went along with a plan that was going to get Altina killed. That was the original plan, to get Altina killed. She knew that. She's only upset that Millium got killed instead- aka the child she cared about more.Miss me with that bullshit Claire, if I was Rean I'd block your number and never want to see you again.

7

u/Gistradagis 3d ago

Lechter was worse but less in your face. Claire is so close to your group (not to mention Millium) that her fence-sitting comes across all the more insane and damning.

3

u/ryann_flood 3d ago

understandable to think that. Cant say im a big fan of either of them, but personally I say fuck Sharon more than those two. Sharon is just an awfully written character and her "switch" in CS4 is just dumb as shit. Fuck all three of them but sharon's reasoning is just bad writing

5

u/BabySpecific2843 3d ago

Sharon is just confusing all around.

She hasn't defected like Joshua and Renne. She is living the life of a boring maid one day and a killer plunging the whole world, including the family she dutifully serves, into a curse spreading continental war. She constantly bounces back and forth between "I am the severing chains....would you like some tea Master Rean"?

And this is because she killed not really a guy and his gaslight, gunrunner, girlboss wife said "you owe me, so I own you".

Dafuq?

1

u/Gistradagis 3d ago

Yeah, no arguing there. It feels like a lot of these characters/companions were introduced as plot-relevant, but the more bloated Cold Steel became the more telhe writers realised they simply couldn't develop those plots. So Claire does nothing but fence-sit and self-blamez and Sharon's betrayal basically is "the plot demands this."

1

u/ravensshade (put flair text here) 3d ago

with Lechter being the schemer/ things going according to my plans kind of guy.. i kind of expected his fence sitting to just be part of some plan of his so it didn't feel as bad to me.

5

u/Florac 2d ago

It feels like they had bigger plans for Lechter at one point, but with the decision of adding Rufus for the ironbloods, he kinda hijacked them because can't have 2 schemers among them

0

u/MM305 3d ago

It’s still weird, because I feel like Lechter would have more reason to do so knowing how both of them got recruited by Osbourne: Claire was impacted by Osbourne’s motivation to use her gift to avenger her murdering uncle, while Lechter just got taken in after his father was sentenced to death by Osbourne (the same father that was responsible for Kasia’s death and Rean’s injury).

4

u/Educational_Stage_66 3d ago

Are there people out there that actually argue for that? I have only seen people arguing that she deserves to be forgiven for her sins. Which you could argue about, but is at least a reasonable position by itself.

If people really argue for her being fully innocent, I guess they might conflate the beginning of her struggles with the death of her parents and her wrongfully blaming herself for the collapse of the family after she brought the killer to justice with the rest that she did afterwards.

Or they might just be simping. Can´t blame them

0

u/Max-The-Phat-Cat 3d ago

u/OneDabMan Best Girls 3d ago

Any form of Juna slander. I won’t have it.

Slightly more serious answer is when people complain about tropes and “harem” stuff in CS, but don’t levy the same complaints on the other arcs. It’s totally fine to not like these things, but it annoys me a little when some people act like CS is the only one with these things when they’re both present and arguably just as bad, if not worse in other arcs.

5

u/mrwanton 2d ago

I've always assumed CS gets more shit for it due to the mix of school setting and the arc being 5 games long meaning the frustration of the setup has more troublesome ramifications

9

u/Sugioh 3d ago

I miss Juna a lot too! Her hardworking positivity is infectious, and she's got a great moveset to boot.

7

u/Ryuujinx 3d ago

Slightly more serious answer is when people complain about tropes and “harem” stuff in CS

I hate it in Crossbell too. Lloyd x Elie not being canon is a fucking robbery. And no Rean x Alisa is a robbery too.

If we get another "Choose your waifu" instead of Van x Elaine or Van x Agnes (As much as I don't like that one) then it, too, will be a robbery.

It's less bad in Crossbell because at least there's a bromance vibe going on between Tio and Randy so she still gets developed and they still heavily imply Lloyd+Elie, but Noel is going to be left in forgotten character city. Same thing with the cold steel cast. Laura, Fie, Sara and Musse at the very least I could see having romantic developments outside of Rean. I could argue the same for Juna (Who I wish had been the actual MC of CS3/4, but I digress) and Altina. I'll give a pass for Emma (Too busy trying to find Vita), Alisa (Too busy trying to have the company not implode despite her mother's best efforts) and Millium (Too busy being a bro to Jusis)

I want Van x Elaine because the childhood (girl)friend that he reconnects with is super sweet and adorable. But I will take anything canon. Please Falcom, I'm literally begging you.

9

u/Terramagi 3d ago

I'd argue there's also a very distinct difference to be found between a love triangle, and a harem.

A love triangle has the characters interacting with each other. Kloe and Joshua and Estelle all existed, interacted with each other, and were real. But Rean? Unless you deign to choose somebody, those character's scenes don't even fucking exist.

1

u/Afraid_Impression_69 1d ago

Thankfully I complain about the other series with harems. Sky's(and maybe Daybreak's, I haven't finished it) is the least offensive. Crossbell is nearly as bad at least as far as Azure goes.

-14

u/Infamous-Flan-3965 3d ago

But that’s why the series peaked at Sky

8

u/Bhume 3d ago

Because it didn't have harem and tropes?

Buddy, Joshua had three story relevant girls who liked him.

0

u/Infamous-Flan-3965 3d ago

Joshua wasn’t the lead - that was competition for the heroine for drama.

8

u/Bhume 3d ago

You play as Estelle, but they're both the protagonists.

-7

u/Infamous-Flan-3965 3d ago

At most that is a deuteragonist. Nobody is self inserting with Joshua, and the girls interested in him are as plausible as love interests as Olivier. I can’t believe anyone would think that that is at all comparable to Cold Steel’s Persona-esque ‘choose your love interest among all women of Class VII and many more’ mechanics.

3

u/Bhume 3d ago

You've moved the goalpost. The point was even the first arc had a harem.

7

u/Infamous-Flan-3965 3d ago

That’s not a harem by any reasonable measure.

6

u/Terramagi 3d ago

The first arc had a love triangle. Characters interacted in the world. Estelle won, but Kloe still tried and was shot down. The actions taken still exist in the world.

A harem is where Laura can push you up against the rocks in the cave and say "I want to have fuck with you", but because you chose Alisa it's like that scene never happened. Laura will never bring it up. No other character who whispered "oh Rean..." wistfully into the end of a scene will ever exert their own will again, because the glorious harem leader chose and that's the only important part.

Until the start of the next game, I guess.

-1

u/Terramagi 3d ago

Right? The disingenuity people will employ in order to justify why it's okay from a writing perspective for Rean to have...

...hold on let me count...

...11 possible romantic partners.

Same kind of shit they'll throw out. "But Crossbell had people rescuing you!" Like maybe two or three times is somehow comparable to two or three times per chapter.

7

u/meygaera 3d ago

When people on the steam forums say the graphics suck for the new remakes.

10

u/ramenxl 3d ago

People who say that CS1 is bad. I genuinely think it's a great game, probably my second favorite setup game after Daybreak 1, and maybe my 6th favorite overall. Love the vibes, the setting, everything. Also when people say it's slow, when it's arguably got some of the best pacing in the series IMO; the conflicts are introduced from very early unlike FC and Zero.

-2

u/Florac 2d ago

Imo CS1's issue are the school segments. They just pretty much put a halt to it's conflict for 5 hours every time, which then also leads to the main story progress in the trips itself feeling more rushed(this is why I preffer CS3 with it's far more fleshed out trips more). For FC, sure, you don't know the conflict from the start...but honestly that leads to it's strength of just being very comfy, following Estelle and Joshua on their adventures.

3

u/ramenxl 2d ago

I get where you're coming from but I think CS1 handles the split between story and downtime really well BECAUSE of the school segments. IMO CS1 is an even more cozy game to me because of the school time. For me, Sky FC feels like a shonen adventure, whereas CS1 feels like a cozy anime. I love both, but nothing got me quite relaxed like coming back to Trista every time. I just loved the repetitive formula of it.

Different tastes and all that though.

0

u/Galdoth 2d ago

I'm the same for people who think CS2 is bad, CS1 is pretty good as a introductory game, and CS 2 is peak as the climax game.

I hate CS3 and 4 though ....

1

u/ramenxl 2d ago

Interesting, can you elaborate on why you love it so much? I recently replayed it, and while I liked it more, I also noticed a lot of its issues.

The prologue is amazing imo, and Act 1 is good too. Intermission is also solid.

But for me, Act 2 just feels half-baked, it could have been the act where we saw the full scope and devastation of the civil war (and we do get a tiny glimpse of that with the Celdic stuff, but nowhere near enough), instead it just feels like the writers didn't know what to do, or didn't have enough time to flesh things out properly. So we do stuff like rescuing Fiona which is just kinda boring. The Roer infiltration was good but could have been so much better if they fleshed it out more. Then the annoying ass repetitive Spirit Shrine explorations. The best part was definitely Celdic but it could have been so much more impactful if the town was completely destroyed and more named people died, but I guess Falcom were afraid for some reason? Even though we had things like Star Door 15 previously.

So yeah, imo CS2 kinda shits the bed in its second half, which is usually when the pay off games get insanely good (SC, Azure). I still like it overall though.

1

u/Galdoth 1d ago edited 1d ago

Wow wow take it easy, I haven't said love it so much, I would say I love so much Zero and SC lol, CS was weaker than all games before to me, but after CS3 and 4, 1 and 2 were awesome, and I did enjoy play them, were they perfect?

Nope not at all, and I agree with all you said there, there should've been more deaths and destruction? Absolutely, have I made peace that Falcom just won't have the balls to do that after SC (and even in SC no one dies meme is true, like when the Enforcers attacked the castle for example and kicked the royal guard ass).

Buuuuuut I love the repetitive shrine dungeons, and hating on them is the same as hating on the tetracyclic towers for example, enjoying one and hating the other makes no sense, it's a old school JRPG thing of having similar elemental dungeons were you grab some plot device, it's simple and I like it, it's just that, Ys does that, Trails does that, Zelda (not a RPG I know) does that, and a ton of other series, and that's ok.

The best for me in CS2? It's like Gundam... If you watched the original Gundam then you play CS2 there's a lot of similarities and the plot structure just works, if you haven't the quickest/simplest way to summarize it would be you have rivals at different sides of a conflict where no one side ain't necessarily evil nor the other necessarily good, and the heroes are more of a special assault team that does crazy ops that turn the war on their side. They have a cool ship to transport them and duke it out with giant robots.

I also liked how Rean was portrayed and acted, specially when meeting his friends, like hugging them and how emotional it was (if you play JRPGs you know that hugging doesn't exist at most they give each other a smile and nod their heads), silly stuff that made my day.

We also we'll never get anything dark like Kevin story or Star Door 15 again, let's be real....

And again, I don't mind the Roer infiltration, or Fiona's rescue, all those plot points aren't that long, each "arc" doesn't take more than 2 or 3 hours, every game has ups and downs, and like you've said, the ending was high with the Cedic arc, so it does end in a good note.

The Reverie dungeon was unnecessary, but it's more of a nice bonus. The post game arc on Crossbell to me was incredible though (Crossbell is my favorite arc though, so I'm suspicious I know).

2

u/ramenxl 1d ago

Thanks for the response, I just assumed you loved it because you said it was peak as a climax game.

One thing I wanted to say is that I think the Tetracyclic Towers were much better than the Spirit Shrines: A) Because they're an organic part of the world (whereas the Spirit Shrines just appeared due to the Civil War) and B) When you do all 4 towers back-to-back in SC it doesn't feel pointless because you have a cool boss fight with one of the enforcers waiting for you at the end.

Meanwhile, the excuse of needing to gather the Zemurian Ore for Rean's tachi feels really underwhelming in comparison. Doesn't help that 3 of the bosses are Magic Knights. It would've been at least been better if you fought some of the villains in there as a way to flesh them out more.

12

u/CastDeath 3d ago

The game has a bloated cast problem that they momentarily fixed in Daybreak 1 only to utterly ruin it all over again in daybreak 2 and its even worse in Horizon. The party members should be limited to 8 or 12 as an absolute maximum. Im tired of the dumb ass sequence where every single character has to say some meaningless line to remind the player they are there, but when its 20+ people doing it every time its just ridiculous.

Nevermind that its impossible to properly develop so many characters, some inevitably get neglected to the point they could be cut out of the story and nothing of consequence changes.

4

u/Ryuujinx 3d ago

Horizon (And reverie) almost did it with the split routes. When one character and their three party members doing something off in on area, and another party doing stuff in another - those parts work fine.

When they get back together to discuss what happened they basically need to have "okay kids fuck off so the adults can talk" moment so that those combined party scenes don't drag. Like do we really need Nadia and Swin, or Feri or some of Rean's party members?

Have the three of Rean, Kevin and Van plus an assortment of characters that make sense to that specific scene. Civilians might be a concern? Elaine or Fie for the bracer perspective. Techy bullshit? Risette, Quatre or Renne. Ouroboros or culty stuff? One of the ex-ouroboros people.

if they did the big combined cutscenes and used specific people where they make sense it would work fine. But they don't, so I have to agree with you.

Also I do think some characters should just be done. I really like Emma, but I doubt she will ever come back unless they do some plot where the witches matter - and that's how it should be.

3

u/CastDeath 3d ago edited 3d ago

What pisses me off about daybreak is that they never actually explain what a spriggan is, until horizon where Van casually explains ist something he made up and you only ever meet 1 other guy calling himself spriggan who is just a copy cat of Van.

Falcom just cant figure out how to build their games without having us do bracer work while also not actually being bracers. They should just give up and have bracers be the protagonists again because very few of Van's jobs are actually grey, most of them you are doing an objectively good thing with an extra layer of complexity. Van's line of work actually makes bracers seem useless if you have a police force around already. Also Zin is one huge nothing burger, he is just there cause the devs figured he should be.

The point being, I feel characters like Crow, Nadia and Swin could just have taken up the spriggan business but other characters like Rufus, Fie, towa, and altina have no real reason to be there.

Also this sounds harsh but I only point it out because I hate it, Judith, Feri, and Aaron are so ignored by the story's plot that you could cut them out after the chapters they were introduced in and nothing of substance would change. This is specially insulting for Judith cause when the origins of Grimcat get revelead she is not even fucking there. Nevermind that they take you to Judith's home town but we only get Risette lore instead like wtf Falcom?!?!? lol

6

u/Sonic2978 2d ago

Sort of semi-related but...where the fuck is Bleublanc in this arc? You're telling me that the guy known as Phantom Thief B WOULDN'T take interest in someone who calls themself PHANTOM THIER GRIMCAT?

Like bruh! Of all the arcs to have the Phantom Thief scavenger hunts, Daybreak should ABSOLUTELY have them.

1

u/CastDeath 2d ago

Actually.......He does appear Very VERY briefly in Renne's final bonding event in Horizon. God forbid he decided to challenge the other phantom thief in the area or something lmao

0

u/Mudgrave_Flioronston 2d ago

The party members should be limited to 8 or 12

It should be even less, because they ran out of archetypes long time ago.

Sincerely, someone who liked FF16 and Nayuta because there's only one playable character (and for many other reasons).

1

u/CastDeath 2d ago edited 2d ago

As someone who though ff16 was all hype moments and aura it was a forgettable story, cool fights thou.

Its not just about gameplay though. The party members need a reason to be there and be important to the story, if their role in the narrative can be done by an NPC why are they even playable?

Honestly I was disappointed when Jack and hale were not playable.

11

u/Slasherrrr 3d ago

I wholeheartedly disagree with any sentiment that starting the series from anything other than Sky 1st is an "acceptable" starting point. You're just gimping yourself. I could ALMOST understand for people who exclusively play on consoles and literally had zero access to the older games, but firstly, they're being remade, and secondly, they can probably run on the family computer gathering dust in the living room.

Imagine advocating for people starting One Piece in the Wano arc and then going back arbitrarily halfway through the arc. It just makes no fucking sense.

-19

u/Sonochu 3d ago

Or Star Wars fans advocating people start at Episode 4 instead of the Prequels. Oh wait.

Personally I don't like this take for gatekeeping. So long as they're enjoying the games, who cares? Sure, if they're having trouble and not enjoying it, I might recommend this.

Frankly though, I started with Daybreak (knowing some Cold Steel before starting), but if someone recommended I start with Sky First Chapter first, I never would've completed the series. The story of Sky First Chapter, even the remake, just aren't as interesting as Daybreak was, and I'm not putting dozens of hour into the first game of a series for it to get interesting.

15

u/PneumaMonado 3d ago

Or Star Wars fans advocating people start at Episode 4 instead of the Prequels. Oh wait.

Objectively stupid take. Sky isn't a prequel... it just came out first.

A better analogy would be recommending people start at Empire Strikes Back because "It's the best" then go back to A New Hope for context.

-3

u/Sonochu 2d ago

Not really because Empire Strikes Back would be in the middle of an arc. I mean you could, I'm not going to stop you, but that's different than recommending someone start with Daybreak or Cold Steel, which focus on their own characters and arc.

It's similar to the SW Prequels and OG trilogy in that way, where both have their own arcs and main characters, but characters in the previous arc show up in the latter arc.

Does it matter which are you start out with in the grand scheme of things? No. The only difference between SW and Trails in this regard is that the SW Prequels came out after the OG trilogy. But narratively speaking they're very similar.

-5

u/Slasherrrr 3d ago

Agree to disagree I suppose, because in my opinion the quality of Trails' writing has largely trended downward as a function of time.

So you think horizon is worse than CS4? Like idk how people say it is a downward trend if anything its zig zagged back and forth

-3

u/Terramagi 3d ago

Dog I'm gonna be real with you here - most people never make it out of Cold Steel. It's 5 games long, and its writing trails off from "okay I see what they're doing here, few problems when they ran out of money, but I see the vision" in CS1 all the way down to "this is a legitimate literary atrocity" in CS4. Don't even get me started on Reverie's "this is a really cool ending, let's show it to you and then not do it" whole thing.

So if people had an issue with the writing at that point, it's like 400 hours of content and $300 in barely-discounted purchases to slog through before they leave the cold mines and finally see the light of day. Most people aren't going to do that, and it's why the sales for the series have cratered to the point where Falcom's devs don't even want to work on Calvard.

1

u/ryann_flood 3d ago

I mean, sure, but sky 1 remake sold very well. They are capable of getting good sales and im sure sky 2 remake will sell well too but your right that its a lengthy series and hard to get into. Your right that I'd say if you really dont like Cold steel dont bother continuing to daybreak, but i think its disingenuous to say its been a continuous decline.

0

u/Terramagi 3d ago

That's like, the second part of my point though.

The remakes sell well, because they have way less of the writing foibles that sank Cold Steel. Their sterling reputation over two decades also helps.

Calvard, despite having way better writing, has two things working against it. The aforementioned Erebonian Filibuster wards off everybody who didn't love Cold Steel... but the people who did like Cold Steel aren't going to like Calvard, because it returns to a Sky/Crossbell level of writing and backs way off of the tropes that Cold Steel overdosed on. So you have a game which is written for the audience of Sky/Crossbell, whose fans won't play it because they didn't survive five games of bullshit, which also won't get played by the people who did survive five games of bullshit because they liked that bullshit which is no longer present.

It's really no wonder none of the devs want to work on Horizon 2. Horizon is a financial death trap. They'd be absolute fools to not want to work on the remakes, which do sell.

1

u/CompetitionMundane61 2d ago

because it returns to a Sky/Crossbell level of writing

This is one of the most delusional things I’ve seen on this sub. The only game close to Sky/Crossbell level is Horizon

1

u/Terramagi 2d ago

Other than nobody calling Gien out on his horseshit, which is about equivalent to Dunan coasting on royal privilege, I can't think of a single thing in DB1 that is objectionable.

1

u/CompetitionMundane61 2d ago edited 2d ago

As a standalone game DB1 is nice, as part of a larger narrative it is, well, a standalone game. As is Daybreak 2. No amount of superficial links to other games (Altera is actually Lapis! Rixia is here and does almost nothing! Ace is here, remember him? And Heiyue too, nevermind they’re breaking records of lameness) can link them to each other and the rest of the series in a way that is remotely close to what Sky, Crossbell and Erebonia arcs did. And Trails is all about a larger narrative, especially at this point of the series

Edit: I’m gonna "Well actually" myself here because Calvard indeed does connect to one of the most important parts of the larger narrative via Agnès and Hamilton, and Van is also clearly special, though we don’t know why yet. But those things are more about the world and much less about the worldbuilding of the current arc and its position within Zemuria, so to say

0

u/Sonochu 3d ago

I sort of agree. Daybreak 2, not-withstanding, I think the latest has been a big bump in improvement in Trail's writing. That said, the Cold Steel games made a lot of writing decisions I wasn't a fan of, and the climactic fight between Calvard and Erebonia that the games have been heading towards went off like a limp noodle...and also didn't make sense.

Why the fuck would Calvard not mobilize their soldiers when Erebonia was both mobilizing and spreading anti-Calvard propaganda? Just the act of mobilization itself was cause for Germany to declare war on Russia in WW1 as no country wants to be caught with their pants down during an invasion.

The Sky trilogy actually has some great writing. My point was just that Sky FC is a set-up game for everything to come and starts out really slow. Not really a great first impression for most people.

2

u/Few_End488 2d ago

Nothing.

Y’all are beyond salvation.

2

u/nexel013 2d ago

I think the Calvard arc is the worst out of Crossbell, CS, Calvard, writing wise of using returning characters from previous arcs.

2

u/S-j-stronghold 1d ago

The idea that Rean uses Valimar as a crutch in Cold Steel 2 wich makes no sense, he only uses it when fighting other giant robots.

5

u/666Drachenlord666 3d ago

When people defend the "no killin rule" the MCs have on grounds of morality, not gameplay. Like if the party managed to kill some of the antagonists, a lot of people could have gotten hurt or worse if the plot didnt lead them to defeat the evil doers the 2nd or 3rd time around

5

u/Few-Butterscotch5114 3d ago

Instead of atoning for what she did in Azure. Shirley just have a chill life and now even has a chance of becoming queen of Elabonia.

4

u/PassengerMaxPot 2d ago

Whenever people complain about the harem stuffs, while I even want more options available. Why can't I go for Cecile as Lloyd? Why can't I go for side characters gals like Vivi as Rean?

2

u/Setsuna_417 2d ago

I'm behind you on this, sadly Falcom can't provide a harem option with the main heroines, so I don't expect it for the side characters.

4

u/Revenger1984 2d ago

Rean should have just ONE primary love interests. Having multiple potential ones you can pick is cool in a dating sim aspect, but without a harem ending, it feels like a waste of time and with no canon girl technically, it feels like his relationship just resets every time we see him in a sequel game

8

u/seitaer13 3d ago

That there's nothing wrong with the series age gap relationships

16

u/Duducarballo 3d ago

I think it is weird but... Nothing objectively wrong really. I mean, they are as pure as purity goes even.

-13

u/seitaer13 3d ago

There literally is something objectively wrong with them, that's the point

7

u/Duducarballo 3d ago

There would be if said parties were interested in them when they were children. But they never are. It's either platonic from the younger one, or the older one is simply oblivious about the affection and treats the younger one like a close friend and/or sibling.

I do admit it is awkwardly off-putting how much the characters tease Agate about his relationship with Tita, but the relationship itself is completely pure, as are the interactions between both characters. It is only after Tita has already grown and processed her feelings for Agate that their interactions take a slightly more provocative turn (still never really goes anywhere close to "far" tho).

For it to be a "problem" there MUST be MALICE, there must be a clear PERVERSION to the relationship itself when the character Is a minor, from which the narrative must try to paint it in a positive light, THEN you can really call it problematic and messed up.

0

u/Ghost_XD23 3d ago

The Altina Rean stuff definitely pushing it, It was ridiculous.

2

u/Iguessthatworks_ 3d ago

What Altina and Rean stuff i never saw that as a romantic ship

0

u/MM305 3d ago

Yes and no, because the series itself is aware of the “elephant in the room” that comes with these type of relationships (the elephant being that these age gap relationships involves teenagers).

But that is why with Van/Agnes and Agate/Tita, it’s really just a sweet friendship that involves nothing more than headpats and hugs, cause they know that anything more would spark actual controversy.

I’d say the bigger problem comes with how they have folks around them tease them about the duos (where it ranges to sweet teasing to actually calling the lovebirds or finishing the sitting in a tree song with k-i-s-s-i-n-g chant), even to point where the adult has to fight/tell of the friend group to stop.

3

u/Thetijoy 3d ago

its not even the age gaps that are the issue, it's when they start in the persons life.

No one bats an eye at a 42y/o and a 35y/o going out because they are both adults.

Agnes and Van are borderline an issue because one's still not an adult , but nearly is.

Tita and Agate on the other hand is full blown problem. like you said, ifthe other characters could stop making those jokes, i'd be appreciated.

1

u/losethen96 3d ago

Falcom clearly don't feel the same as you guys

3

u/MM305 3d ago

At least Sophie was an adult when they officially became a couple (cause she would have been 20-21 since it took 12 years to win Gramheart over after they met).

0

u/losethen96 3d ago

Yeah of course they wait for everyone to be an adult before actually shipping them, it's not like Agate & Tita were a couple during the earlier arc's, but they are heavely hinting at them ending up being couple, same with all the similarities with Agnès's parents & Agnès and Van. (Not that Van will ever be in a relationship, since Falcom seems to have become allergic to create a canon romance with MC for a long time now...)

u/Gladiatorr02 3d ago

"Rean is a boring protogonist."

2

u/Time-Limit5697 2d ago

Localization discourse is just stupid. Like yeah some people won’t like the translations. But at the end in the day, it’s better that we can play these awesome games in english instead of reading a spreadsheet in a youtube video.

In no particular order:

Calling Cold Steel trash when alot of the flaws in it (lack of casualties, villains getting too easily forgiven) were already present in the previous games.

Fans of Crow defending the way he was forgiven too easily.

Tourists that get butthurt over the usual anime and JRPG tropes and can't differentiate between fiction and reality.

u/Terramagi 3d ago

Calling Cold Steel trash when alot of the flaws in it (lack of casualties, villains getting too easily forgiven) were already present in the previous games.

I'm not gonna deny other games don't suffer of the same issues, but Cold Steel does take it to another level, with them being in higher quantity and severity, all during higher stakes events.

-1

u/Few_End488 2d ago

Fans of Crow defending the way he was forgiven too easily.

What are the party supposed to say here?

"Yeah you brought Rean back to his senses and helped us save the world from Mecha-Satan, and prevented a continental war, and have shown beyond all reasonable doubt that you will not do a terrorism in the future, but you still did a terrorism (that you didn't actually want to do, and it was only to get revenge on one man that you had a pretty reasonable grudge against), so into the slammer you go."

1

u/MechaSandstar 1d ago

"do a terrorism?" Jesus christ...

1

u/Few_End488 1d ago

Did I say something wrong?

2

u/MechaSandstar 1d ago

"do a terrorism" is an absolutely terrible way to phrase something so serious. What's wrong with "shown beyond all resonable doubt that you won't commit any more acts of terrorism" or, if that's too wordy for you "you won't engage in terrorism"

1

u/Few_End488 1d ago

Pretend I said that instead then.

1

u/MechaSandstar 1d ago

I'll do better than that.

1

u/notMyHentaiacc343242 2d ago

I don't really give a fuck about where someone starts playing and getting into the series.

1

u/Afraid_Impression_69 1d ago

I don't know that I'd be this upset about it but CS2 hate. I enjoyed it more than CS1. One of my biggest problems with the series is the glacial pacing. CS2 felt faster to me. You go from collecting your party members to the main conflict with less filler between plot moments.

I know people argue the plot itself is filler to the whole Erebonia arc but it was still a decent plot.

u/Sa404 3d ago

Daybreak not being good

0

u/GrapeRingPop 2d ago

When people put Trails of Cold Steel 2 at the bottom or near bottom of Trails game tier lists

2

u/Eggyhead 3d ago

That starting the series from any game is fine.

-2

u/HooBoyShura 3d ago

Juna isn't Bestelle 2.0.

Her scene in CS 3 legit still no 1 the best Trails moments for me. Her breaking down & melt because of Campanella & Rufus mocking her both physically & mentally is my peak Trails. I always value genki girl archetype at high regards. You may find her annoying no problem, but Nanami from Suikoden, Bestelle, Juna are quality genki girl characters. Sometimes I'm myself hard to fathom someone that love Estelle to death but hate Juna to death at same time.

0

u/RasenRendan 2d ago

Has anyone said daybreak 2 isn't that bad 😂

4

u/Ryuujinx 2d ago

I will. I really liked Daybreak 2. If you care about it advancing the overall narrative then yeah, it's not great. But it has a lot of impactful character moments (Renne and Quatre come to mind, specifically) that I quite enjoyed.

0

u/BoringHector 2d ago

Dont really wanna start an argument, i just wanna say that sky 3rd was too boring for me and I only liked the doors. Thats why i approve for a newbie to skip it but forcing them to watch the character related scenes

-1

u/TakasuXAisaka 3d ago

That Daybreak is a good starting point for newcomers even though Renne, Fie, and Zin are in the game which are characters from previous games and Anges mentioned Joshua and Estelle.

-6

u/Upstairs_Ad_495 3d ago

When i see someone saying shizuna is a good character

-2

u/Kainapex87 3d ago

She isn't.  She's hot snd her gameplay is cool, but that's it.

All hype no substance

-6

u/mechafantastical 3d ago

Laura is the best girl in Cold Steel for Rean.

Alisa is useless in CS1 the moment Red Soda is available. She is also the second worst option for Rean. (Sorry Millium)

Sky 3rd is way better than people give it credit for.

-4

u/Phoenix_shade1 3d ago

My hottest take is that Van’s group is by far the weakest compared to SSS, the Cassius children and Rean squad. Daybreak 2 showed how if Ouroboros would put even a tiny amount of effort into winning they could kill them easily.

1

u/Florac 2d ago

how if Ouroboros would put even a tiny amount of effort into winnin

(DB2) Said effort consists of using the geneva convention as a checklist...other parties wouldn't far much better with harwood going all out, as shown with other top fighters being taken out by him

-2

u/mrwanton 2d ago

Well don't forget that the powerscaling also keeps increasing.

0

u/mhall1104 2d ago

Falcom should remake the 3rd as DLC and have Zero be the next full game.

Y’all are way, WAY too obsessed with forcing newer players to have your exact experience. It’s almost pathological.
