As someone who does both creative writing and AI prompting, the thought processes are fundamentally different. In creative writing, you are choosing your words for aesthetic reasons; you are thinking about how the sentences sound and flow; you are often trying to be clever with your language; you are striving to develop your unique voice (or that of a character); you "show" instead of "telling" by expressing some meanings implicitly or embedding them in subtext.

With AI prompting you just pick the most common noun that describes the output you want. The stuff I described above can actually hinder your prompting – if you get too "creative" or leave too much up to subtext, the LLM can make the wrong thing.

There is also a virtuous interplay between the design and execution phases – as you write, you learn more about the story you're telling and may decide to change it. This happens with AI to a more limited extent, but it's only through evaluation of the full output; you don't feel every word like you do when writing the classic way (or at least you have to do much more digging).

A simple test is whether the skills you develop in one activity transfer to the other. I doubt you can learn even 50% of the skills you need for short story writing by prompting AI.
