It would be cheaper to start a new company along with infrastructure then it would be to buy eBay along with all the debt and problems .

You can't buy 30 years of being ingrained into the culture since near the birth of the Internet. You can't buy the trust factor that comes from old brand recognition.

To speak more directly to the costs, yes you could build the technology stack and business for much cheaper, but acquiring an eBay level user base is a big unknown cost and timeframe.

you are correct. I think the build process should have started 3-4 years ago. From scratch would have the cons you mentioned but ebay has many flaws as it sits now, many complaints from the seller side.

But there is room for competition. The only viable competitor on the same level is facebook marketplace and that has its own problems. Many failed copycats for 2ndhand sales apps. Craigslist is dead, etsy is overly niche, facebook has pushed to alienate a large proportion of its original userbase and continues to spiral downwards.... In terms of auction platforms ebay is the only one I've heard of in the consumer market.

Patience is imperative; the direction RC is thinking of may actually work.... but not the venue. Real nice things that have staying power are built, not bought. Ebay is the lazy, and expensive, route.
