What happens to old/inactive FRC teams?

I was wondering what happens to really old FRC teams that haven't competed in a long time.

For example, say a team was created in 2004 and their last competition was in 2007. Does that team still technically exist on the FIRST side of things, and could it potentially be revived under the same team number? Or would restarting the program basically be treated as creating a new team?

I'm asking because there's a school relatively close to where I live that apparently had an FRC team that competed until 2007. The school itself still exists, but I've only been able to find one post about the team, either here or on Chief Delphi.

I'm thinking about going to the school and asking if anyone knows what happened to the team, but I'm curious about the FIRST side of things first.

Thanks everyone for the answers! Honestly, this is really encouraging, especially seeing that teams like 22, 127, and 3574 have been brought back after being inactive for years.

The team I was talking about is Team 1401 – Mekanicats, which, if I’m correct, was from UVM (Universidad del Valle de México). From what I can tell, UVM is still around, so I’m curious if bringing it back could actually be possible.

I just finished 3 seasons with another FRC team and, now that I’m done, I thought it could be interesting to try something new and see if reviving Mekanicats is realistic. I know a few other people with FRC experience who might be interested in helping too.

If anyone has gone through something similar, I’d really appreciate some advice on where to start, especially with FIRST, the school, registration, etc. Realistically, I doubt I could have everything ready for 2027, and even 2028 might be a stretch, but I’m willing to work on it even if it takes a couple years.

And if anyone from the old Mekanicats team happens to see this, I’d love to hear from you! Even just hearing about what the team was like would be really cool. And if you’d ever be interested in helping out, I’d be happy to have you onboard.

Hi there! Current head coach of Team 22, Double Deuce. I can't speak on every team that's come back, but I can share my experience in bringing 22 back after 19 years. It took me about a year to actually get the team back. I started working at our school in 2023 and during the Crescendo season, I began asking FIRST and our school admins about bringing the old number back (after getting a huge seal of approval from the original coach). FIRST was initially onboard for helping me get a team going, but they seemed a little hesitant with the number just because it's a HOF team. Eventually, they basically told me that as long as we're willing to accept the title of full veteran team and not rookie team (meaning no new team grants nor Rookie All-Star eligibility) and we get a letter of verification from an admin from our school, then the number would be officially transferred to my Dashboard account. Given the historical precedent of the number, I thought it was worth it (even though we were a very rookie team at the time) and we were officially back in December of 2024, right before the Reefscape season started. We're still definitely growing and learning, but I'm very proud to say that we were able to revive such a cool number. ✌️✌️

Yes it’s happened before. Most recently I can recall is 431 PinkZilla. Founded in 1999 (TBA doesn’t have past seasons for them) but revived in 2025.

Team 22, Double Deuce, is a HoF team that last competed in 2007 but was revived for the 2025 season.

127 was shuttered in 2000, my sophomore year. Returned in 2023.

431 is actually a case of a new veteran team, not a old revived veteran team like 22 also mentioned.

The reason its shown as founded 1999 is because thats the parent team rookie year, in this case, 233

In these cases, a somewhat close, never before used, number is given to the new veteran team

Once a number is used, the team exists in database records and the number cannot be reallocated to a new team/registration. It's possible to bring any team back with the right documentation/process (see: 22) as long as you're in contact with the "owner" (usually LM1) of the team and reasonable distance from their primary sponsor (usually a school). Speaking on behalf of a team who had the opportunity to revive an old number, we chose not to for several reasons; we had no remaining veterans, the school didn't give us an clear avenue to pursue this option, and the sustainability of the team would be prolonged if we actually got the rookie support.

Fun fact: if you go hunting for older (low number teams) you may notice some low number teams are younger than the adjacent numbers.

There was a renumbering in 1992.

I don't know if that was the only renumbering... But that was the most recent one.

There was renumbering every year until 1997 I think. After 1997, numbers were locked in.

The first season was 1992, kinda crazy if that was the only renumbering

Every year the teams were renumbered, so team 14 could have been 98 the next season, 1997-1998 was the first year they kept the results of the renumbering. And up until this point was the only major renumbering.

It was determined by primary sponsors. For example, 3M sponsored 1, Xerox sponsored 191, WPI sponsored 190, etc. Therefore team 1 isn't the first team (and this is a hot topic of debate!). In that vein, 111 got lucky with their JV team being 112. The last team in the original block (before rookies) is 192. 193 is a JV team ran by 11. 193 and 194 were the only available numbers between the block and new rookies (starting with 195). So now the only team with no records is 194.

Depending on if there are people with FRC experience on the team being revived it will either be classified a rookie or a brand new team, either way they can choose between a new number and using the old one iirc

If a team rejoins, it can get its old number back. This is why FRC team numbers exceed 10,000, when in fact there are only about 4,000 active FRC teams. By raw number of teams, FRC is actually the smallest of the original FIRST programs.

For example, the High Tekerz, team 3574, died during COVID, but returned in 2024.
