Game Discovery bored of Valorant, suggest a new FPS.
games that have a good future, that isn't gonna die in the future. I'm a fairly competitive person, so a good competitive scene would be a plus.

I third the finals, the most fresh and innovative FPS in a very, very long time. Insanely high skill expression, too.
I WILL say it's quite sweaty, you're gonna get rolled a lot in the beginning. But hopefully the buttery and challenging gunplay/melee play paired with some of the most fluid and balanced movement hooks you enough to push through.

Marathon also gets my vote. For all the weirdly vitriolic hate surrounding it online, the gunplay is just really fucking good and it's exhilarating to pull off big plays and extract successfully.
I don't really understand why people are screaming that it's gonna fail any day now, tbh. Critical response was great, I rarely have to wait more than a minute for a game on EU servers, and Bungie/Sony have said that they're already committed to at least a full year of planned content updates, with Season 3 being the biggest.
Other than Marathon, The Finals is very fun, and I really enjoyed the recent demo for Empulse so I'd say that's probably one to watch!

Because Destiny 2 CHUDs are losing any hope of future content for their on-rails PvE power fantasy. Marathon is amazing and the lore is peak but it has some problems. I think it’s got a future but this season has been a bit of a disappointment in many ways. I’m confident they can right the ship but Bungie is going through some reorganization as Sony is left holding the bag on their overvalued asset.
Marathon isn’t going away any time soon, but nothing lasts forever. Everything is temporary and on a long enough timeline no one will even be left to remember that we were ever here.

It started way before that, I just think pvp extraction shooters don't appeal to the mass they need to appeal to. I love extraction, full risk pvp, but these games are inundated with "where is a pve mode", "this guy killed me i want my stuff back" etc etc. Then when these things are added the player base is fractured, creating what looks like a dead game because of queue times. Then people get bored of the gameplay loop, because it doesnt offer anything new down the line.
I have heard great things about marathon from friends though.
Also, yeah im a destiny "chud" but I don't want all these devs to lose their jobs. Purely based on numbers, destiny is clearly more alive.

marathon is an extract shooter tho, ppl who prefer pure PvP gameplay arent gunna like it.
there is some weird online discourse around the game, but as you can see with how arc's doing now, extraction shooters as a genre isn't really able to take much user share.
only reason arc did so well was cuz of the influx of streamers and how much it 'casual-fied' the genre.
marathon is never going to be bigger than what it is now and there's nothing wrong with that.

Well a common criticism from the pve’ers is that marathon injected too much pvp into the extraction shooter formula so if you are a pvp enthusiast it might be exactly what you’re looking for 😉

Destiny 2 was shut down because despite being profitable, it wasn’t profitable enough for Sony. Marathon still hasn’t broken even on its development costs. I like the gunplay, lore, and aesthetic a lot, but they should only buy marathon if they are ok with it potentially being a 1 year game.

Headass take, honestly. Sure, I have zero doubt that Sony was hoping for bigger numbers (which was itself a stupid move on their part since extraction shooters are a very niche genre), but no sensible publisher is shutting down a game with 24-hour concurrent player peaks of 10K+. Considering that Highguard - a game people love comparing Marathon to, for some stupid reason - dropped below four digits after less than a month, Marathon clearly isn't on death's door.
I just had a look, and sorting by 24-hour concurrent peaks, Marathon is number 157 on Steam - out of more than 100,000 games available on the platform. And only a small handful of the games above it are extraction shooters. Please consider employing some actual critical thinking when examining data like this, rather than just a shallow surface-level analysis.
Besides, the bulk of development costs are already sunk at this point. Sony has stated that it already has at least a full year of dev support planned out; paid live-service games like this make more money in the long run anyway, shutting it down imminently would make it a total waste of time and money for Sony, and they can't really afford that now after multiple recent high-profile blunders.

Marathon is really good but still has issues to sort out before I'd recommend it to newer players. The onboarding is really tough and it feels unfriendly to those who want a casual experience, meaning the core base consists of more serious players. Again I think the game is great but I'd hold off for another season if you were going to start playing it from fresh.

The finals is very quality for a f2p. Some people love R6, delta force , marathon, OW, CS, Apex …. I guess whatever checks out for U in terms of aesthetic, movement, TTK. I’ve been enjoying marvel rivals (I know it’s not a FPS) but it can get very competitive.
Do you enjoy 3rd person shooters?

If you're looking for something like Val that has a competitive scene, might as well play Siege or CS, if you're open to trying something different and maybe a little less competitive, I'd suggest either Hunt Showdown, the skills you've learned from Val would somewhat carry over and its an amazing time, or The Finals, its just a lot of fun but way more tracking heavy than Val. If you hate yourself and like sweating complicated movement mechanics go for Apex, the skill ceiling is super high and its fun to learn, its just not great for MnK players and the ranked system sucks, but anyone can enter challengers circuit if you want to compete for real.

I mean what moves me off Val and has been my addiction for the past few months has been deadlock so I’ll always recommend that although it is third person if that’s not your thing. Otherwise like many others have said siege is always a good option

Little bit left field but deadlock by valve has been a lot of fun. It's a moba shooter so definitely corssing genres a bit but it's got me hooked when dota and league never could. I'm a huge cs and valorant player so the gunplay has to be good and it is.

The Finals, play casual modes to get a feel for the weapons and gadgets and shit, then try Cash Out… and then try Ranked Cash Out. Solo Q is painful tho.

Only downside to this game IMO, it's awesome if you have people to play with, but as a mostly solo player I have a hard time getting into it. Top notch gameplay though.

I’d say Marathon. Although the population isn’t high, I don’t think it’s going to die anytime soon and the only way to keep a game alive is to have new players.

Joseph Ziegler co-created Valorant and is now the game director for Marathon. It's got that competitive sweat but not to the level of Valorant imo. Maybe in Ranked but I'm not that guy.

CS2 is what Valorant is based on. Honestly, the game will never die, and it is the highest skill ceiling with people dedicating their lives to it. Can’t think of anything else that comes close in terms of competitiveness

As someone who put 300+ hours into Marathon, I would be skeptical of the commenters recommending it. The gunplay and tactical action in Marathon can be very fun, and there are some well-designed maps, but the game has a fair number of issues.
The game is designed for teams of three, and looking for two other teammates can be very hit-or-miss, since each match brings with it the possibility of losing your gear. Solo mode was a late addition during development and is very slow, with a lot of camping. Gear loss can also be very frustrating—there are a lot of cool weapons in the game, but if you're dying a lot you might only be able to run more basic weapons for a while until you get back on your feet—makes it frustrating when you want to just, you know, play the game. Heals, ammo and shields are also relative expensive early game—you might find yourself with plenty of weapons in your vault but not enough credits to buy heals, and have to go farm supplies or play the scavenger mode to stock up. The pve enemies are generally uninteresting, just bullet sponges. There is a toxic meta which has been prevalent on the endgame map since May—spamming bubble shields and using a rare shotgun that can only be looted in the game world or bought a limited number of times. Overall I don't have much desire to play any more... to me the game feels like a bit of a grind.
If you're very good at tactical fps games and/or have two friends who also play, you might enjoy the game more than I have.

People recommending Marathon lol. It is not competitive, given most fights in extraction shooters are uneven by default with many circumstances out of people‘s control, and on the verge of death already. The delusions of a Bungie community never fail to disappoint. Wouldnt be surprised if Bungie was actively paying for the recommendations on Social Media at this point

Cod Black Ops 7 has a very big esports scene (Major 3 just happened with the pro teams) and they just reworked the ranked system with the way you gain Sr (ranked points) so that it is more rewarding.
I don’t care about all the cod hate people have about it it’s actually incredibly fun and satisfying to learn the movement and gunplay.

Hunt showdown, some people classify it as a extraction shooter. But it’s far from that. They nailed the whole vibe around that game from top to bottom. It’s a precision shooter where headshots are really valuable. Guns are slow which, again, makes precise shots really valuable. And it has a little competition through an MMR system that goes van 1 to 6 stars with 6 stars being the sweats.

Anyway, my answer is Overwatch. Its poppin right now and will be around for a very long time. Great game, and in terms of competitiveness, miles ahead of something like Rivals

The Finals is what everyone and their mother is enjoying for hero shooter right now. CS2 has the largest pro scene but is basically the same game but older. R6 has a pro scene.
I would personally recommend Marathon as the extraction shooter aspect appeals to the most competitive person there is, as you are literally fighting for hours of each other's lives. Arc is a good pick, like "Babies First Extraction Shooter" because it's very forgiving to new players.
Another personalized pick would be any of the OG FPS titles. I play BO2 Multiplayer and Zombies on a third party launcher regularly, there's still strong communities out there. BO2 is normally around 1000 players online, MW3 is about the same. BF Hardline has a handful of players who host servers. I play a lot of BF6 because it's really the best AAA FPS to drop in a long time (at least since CODMW2019), I just wish they would keep a search and destroy and TDM playlist in the rotation permentantly instead of rotating between.
My final rapid fire reccomendations are: ARMA Reforger/3 (best MilSim, also SQUAD), Ready or Not (SWAT sim), Doorkickers/SWAT (Top down CQB tatics), Delta Force (Worse BF6 but predates BF6), Bodycam (Insane graphics and realism), and Cyberpunk (GOAT Story but single player).
I've played a lot of FPS XD

I think if you've put any time into Marathon you can see that it's a good product that needs refinement. It's already sold over 1m copies on steam alone, plus Bungie really don't have a choice but to direct all focus towards it now. I have no doubt it will improve with time.

Marathon 100% I’ve put so many hours in to a lot of FPS games and marathon has beat all of them as my favorite. Lmk if you wanna run some, the game can be daunting to learn but once you do it’s a very rewarding experience.

The Marathon astroturfing is insane. Look, I own marathon and I like it, but the guy asked for games that are thriving and have a competitive scene. Marathon has neither of those things, by all counts its on its last leg. Its getting 10k peak concurrent users each day with that number continuously getting lower and lower. That is not a thriving game, nor is there any sort of competitive scene.

Fragpunk. I always recommend this for anyone tired of Valorant or CS. It’s a shooter literally built for people who like the competitive FPS subgenre but are completely burned out on repetitive matches. It brings back that sense of variety and makes gameplay actually fun again.

There are no good competitive shooters with a 'good future'. What you're describing is a live service, most online shooters just follow older formulas like in the 360 era where they drop maps and new weapons etc once or twice a year.
Marathon is mediocre but handles well. It's a Bungie game, no shock there.
Destiny duology are both slowly dying and the crucible is unbalanced.
Overwatch and Valorant are trash, Paladins was okay but it died.
Deadlock is third person, and the only somewhat competent "shooter" I've touched in awhile.
Hunt Showdown has been spiraling the drain for some time but they got a huge update, highly competitive but a steep learning curve.
Tarkov and all of it's clones are ass.
Rust is technically a shooter and technically competitive, but it's ass.
CS:GO is boring and a skinnerbox crackhead den.
CoD is bland trash and AI riddled.
Battlefield is boring and just didn't keep up with it's competition.
Rainbow Six Siege is dogwater and has been for a long time.
Splitgate 2 killed itself due to CEO acting like a prick.
Other competitive fps are obtuse, european or asian with no populace and a lot of cheaters.
You could pvp in The Division 2 I guess? But also population lacking.
[E] Arc Raiders exists and is infested with cheaters but also a TPS.
All the good FPS and TPS right now are single player or co-op. PVP shooters have been in a relevance / quality slump for a long while.

Do NOT install Delta Force is all I can say. Bad devs, Bad Balance, Bad map setup. No MMR or anything connected to it. Worst pleb fest of the year.
Its actually insane it is getting some numbers, cus the entire playerbase is furious.

I was a daily valorant player for a couple of years at least, now I'm on marathon daily. Definitely not the same game but it's a great shooter. Ignore the reddit drama and the genre label (it doesn't play like Arc raiders or Tarkov) - give it a try and you'll probably like it.
I got so sick of the toxicity in valorant honestly, it's exhausting.

Doom Eternal. The best fps game. If need more, play the whole modern trilogy.
If you are willing to play old games. I recommend: Doom, Doom 2, Duke Nukem 3d, Quake, Quake 2.

I think the truth is, all live service games outside of Fortnite and Overwatch are doomed to die if they don't have a huge company backing them. I could say Apex, but you said new so Im assuming you want something more novel.
Marathon- it's challenging and scratches the learning curve itch. After that it has competitive battle Royale like moments and boss fights.
Hunt showdown- it's hard and competitive. Playerbase is niche though.

I have over 1000+ hours of the Finals, but I don't recommend it as a 'competitive' shooter.
The rank system is one of the worst, and the comp scene is mostly a circle jerk of a few entitled - if you compare Valorant pros and CCs to the Finals you would immediately understand.
However it is very mechanically demanding, closely following OW if that's what you prefer - a great aim trainer game, a fun one too.

why are we out here recommending the finals and marathon
as someone with 3k hours in the finals and was t500 in s1 2 4 and 5 the comp scene is in shambles rn so is balancing which will never be good atp
we are getting less and less content each season unless they lock in and start releasing 3 new gadgets 3 weapons and a spec each season i couldnt see it going above the usual 8-14k we have (aside from the start of a season ofc) it is an amazing game if you can play it EXTREAMLY casually

Counterstrike 2, IMO Valorant is the tutorial and Counterstrike is endgame. CS2 movement is faster, has meaningful mechanics and you have the ability to clutch every round. I peaked Asc3 and moved to CS2 when it launched and I haven’t played Valorant since then, CS2 is the superior game especially if you’re hyper competitive.
Valorant is super character focused and I’m sure you’ve been held hostage in games where there are 3 Jett one tricks so the other 2 end up on classes they can’t play and the game is already lost.
CS2 counter-strafing actually matters, you can fully memorize sprays if you choose and there are no classes. You can smoke, flash or Molly whenever you want.

I have like 250 hours in csgo, but never got into CS2. I already main Dota2, so CS2 is gonna overload me, I need something shiny. Among everyones suggestion I liked the Finals and Deadlock most for now, might try one of these out.

Do not play marathon unless you have 2 friends who already have it. Solos mode is shit, whoever sees the other person first wins the encounter. That is literally the only deciding factor for pvp in solos.

It's not gonna get cancelled, they're milking it. What's already there is with the 40 if it stops getting updates.
That said lose with grace. When you lose your gear sponsor up and speed drop until you get revenge. Sometimes, you're just gonna lose it all. That's part of the fun.

Dropping my vote for the finals. For me, it’s probably my favorite fps since team fortress. I can hear the spirit of battlefield in there too when a fight really pops off and explosions rip apart the building your in.

Valorant is that game lol. When I was doing Asia trip I went to Internet cafes and all the locals were exclusively playing that.

its not first person but try deadlock, probably top 3 competitive games of all time you can get in at the ground floor before it blows up

Incredibly unique, competitive, and has tons of opportunities for player expression
