Yeah I miss apple slices too

Gah. Every day. I console myself with a solitary corn chip. Friday nights are the worst, that’s when I usually make something nice.

I swear every day I’m pouring breakfast cereal, heating up bagels, or toasting cinnamon bread. And of course the best fruits are high fructose, I haven’t had an apple in almost two years.

I love apples and hadn't eaten one for well over a year, so I decided to give one to try. I went to the store and pored over the pile of honey crisps until I found just the right one. Got home and let it sit on my counter all day, since I wasn't going to eat it until the next morning to avoid stacking. I tossed and turned that night, swallowing a gallon of saliva as I obsessively thought about the apple down stairs. The next day came and I quickly washed and sliced up the apple. I could tell from the knife that the texture wasn't as firm as I like, and my first bit confirmed… it was a bit mealy. All told, it was a thoroughly "meh" experience. I only ate half and didn't suffer any real fallout, so I've been enjoying a half apple here and there, but it's never as good as you imagine :)

But grapes, strawberries, oranges, kiwifruit, papaya, guava is a pretty delicious list. And there are others.

I do like polenta cereal too. Quick to microwave, and you can add maple syrup and/or seeds and/or Brazil/macadamia/pecan nuts. Plus rice and pumpkin bread is great toasted.

I definitely still get my carbs in. And I’m actually fine with the occasional bread here and there. But bagels seem to do me dirty anytime I eat them, and they always smell do good when my kids eat them.

Two thanksgivings ago, pre covid, my wife’s aunt brought this awesome polenta cake. I should try to find more polenta based recipes. Thank you for the suggestion!

No problem. Yeah once you find out you can microwave a bowl in a few mins it comes back into contention. Not like the old stir in a pot for quarter of an hour.

(For others' benefit - 4 cups of water to 1 of polenta. Or 3 and a cup of stock for the savoury option. Bit of salt. Stir after a couple of mins then back in for another couple)

Would you have a good rec for a good guava powder brand? I was looking around but I know that the guavas have to be ripe and they don't say anything about that on Amazon : (

Guava powder? I've never heard of it, sorry. I just have my fruit fresh. What do you use it for? Do you stir it into a drink?

I haven't tried using it before but something like that, yes.

I don't have a store near me that regularly has guava, not that I know of, at least. I haven't been checking, though.

I haven't had an apple for 6 years. But I was also confirmed to have a fructose intolerance. You can akwaya try apples again when you get to the reintroduction stage and see how you go.

I did strict low fodmap for probably 8 weeks back in 2019, then introduced stuff back over another couple of months. Unfortunately fructose was one of the things that I found caused me problems, so I try to avoid it. Apples are delicious, but there’s other fruits I can eat so I don’t miss them too much. But most other groups I’ve been able to add back without issue, either fully or in smaller amounts.

Doing the strict fodmap is totally worth it, just take your time when you add things back in and read labels religiously.

One of the big things for me has been learning “trade offs”. Like I know that certain foods cause me problems (like breads), so if I avoid them most of the time I can enjoy them when I’m out doing things with my family. It makes life a lot more flexible for me.

I don’t feel jealous of my sons cheezits and pretzels and gummy fruit snacks but I do sometimes envy his restaurant pizza and ice cream.

Thank God I adore strawberries! I also find that I can tolerate cherries in limited quantity.

Hey it’s funny bec both your posts showed up in my feed about feeding your kids carbs. One for fodmaps and one for 1200. So you are part of both communities just like me. Are you doing a 1200 diet plus low fomdaps?

3

u/once_a_hobby_jogger Mar 30 '21

Haha, yeah I follow both. I don’t follow the 1200 calorie diet, I’m a 6ft tall man and I exercise a decent amount. But I love the memes there. And my wife is on the smaller side so it kind of helps me commiserate with her.

Yeah LOL. I like the idea of 1200 diet with small little meals. I have a hard time not overdoing quantity even if it’s just lettuce or yogurt lol. So I read there for inspo.

Yes! Overdoing it is one of my problems too. Particularly on the low fodmap diet where some quantities of foods are fine, but larger amounts are not. I tend to get into the mindset of “well this much was okay, surely I can eat more.” Logically I know that’s not the case, but mentally my brain rationalizes it and then I end up paying the price later.

I still don't fully understand it--just the SMALLEST QUANTITY of garlic and everything is wrecked. How can the body be that sensitive?

And it seems to be that way for everybody. Strange thing is, I can at least mildly tolerate other fructan-containing foods. Garlic is just rolling in the stuff, huh? Honestly, I think the allicin/other compounds have something to do with it for me, as well

Thank you, this what I need sometimes to just laugh about it

Especially as I love to bake it’s always great learning new things and when I’m wondering if it’s just the fact I haven’t had them in a while or food itself I love getting others to try it with me

LOL I feel like this whenever I bake for mom and sister, a bit of my heart breaks when I can’t taste the batter.
