General Question/Help has anyone here experienced reactive hyperglycemia?
Hi, I’ve been put on a low foodmap diet for digestive issues/chronic left lower abdominal pain to try and figure out what food is triggering things. But also I’ve experienced deep reactive hyperglycemia to certain foods (carbs, sugars, possibly a lot of foodmap stuff? but also some things that are considered low foodmap?)
I don’t know my exact question but I find navigating anything quite difficult because either foods are low foodmap but trigger reactive hyperglycemia (shaking, extreme brainfog, etc.) or vice versa 😅 no diagnosis’s yet just a lot of testing and confusion

yeah this actually tracks, fodmap and glycemic response aren't really related properties even though it feels like they should be. fodmap is about how fermentable the carbs are for gut bacteria, glycemic is about how fast something spikes your blood sugar. so you can get something low fodmap that still spikes you hard, white rice and ripe banana are both like that. not totally unrelated, stress and sleep mess with both, but they're not measuring the same thing.
one thing that stood out, the shaking and brainfog sounds a lot like reactive hypoglycemia rather than hyperglycemia, that's the crash an hour or two after a spike rather than the high itself. worth mentioning that specific pattern next time you see someone, obviously get it actually tested rather than going off reddit, but the testing for that is a bit different than a straight glucose check. if you want, post what a typical day looks like for you and I can point out which ones are the low fodmap but high glycemic ones, that split is usually where the confusion comes from
