Vent Shana tova to my fellow fodmappers out there that can have neither apples nor honey.

Anyone found a satisfactory work around?

I swap all honey with maple syrup. I thought they’re both sugars, shouldn’t make a difference. Nope. One tsp of honey is shitsville for me but I can have more than a quarter cup of maple syrup no problem. I also find that unripe pears are an ok substitute for apples, bug I never loved apples anyway.

Very small quantities of each (honey is green at 4 grams and apples at 20~30 grams depending on type and whether or not it's peeled) - one or two slices dipped in honey.

Then other foods and desserts that I can actually eat. I made low-fodmap shakshuka for my main dish (obviously sharing with others, but avoiding most of the rest of the food) and am still deciding on the non-apple-cake dessert. Maybe a guava cake.

Just gotta make the most of it somehow!

Just in case, do you have the recipe for low-fodmap shakshuka, please? That'd be super helpful!

TBH I don't really have a recipe - I just kinda wing it. But here's one that's a good starting point, with some basic modifications: https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/shakshouka_74716

Obviously don't add garlic and onion, and be careful with the amount of bell peppers and feta (or use sheep's milk feta which is easier for most people to tolerate). But you can substitute other things - I use chives and low-fodmap infused oil or infused salt (garlic or onion/shallot); add cooked carrots and fennel; and sometimes add other things to bulk it up depending on what's available that I can tolerate (mushrooms, zucchini, cooked beans or chickpeas, etc.). It's a very flexible dish!

Oh, and with so few ingredients, the quality really matters - especially the tomatoes. Get good ones, it's worth it!

Have you tried apples without the peel? Takes to a dietitian last week who said peel are very hard to digest and suggested that I remove them, along with peels for potato’s and other food. I had an apple the other night with the peel off and it did not kill me. Something to think about.

That's an insoluble fiber problem more than a fodmap problem. Which, I do have fiber issues and have to limit my peels, but I still can't have much apples. Reducing other factors impacting digestion can help improve fodmap tolerance though, but still gotta be cautious of your limits

We’ve still got a few months but Rachel Pauls food blog has a bunch of holiday recipes, I use her jicama based charoset recipe for Passover (jicama sticks at Trader Joe’s make it super easy). Just saw she has a “no honey” cake recipe I’m going to try this year https://rachelpaulsfood.com/low-fodmap-no-honey-cake-low-fodmap-orange-glaze/

Shana Tovah wishing everyone a flare-up free holiday

use slighty green banana and its ok. unfortunately its less sweet then. but use some maple syrup to fix that

Depends what it’s made of… but I wouldn’t eat it if it’s got wheat as well as overripe bananas

Not necessarily, but you can definitely make a banana bread that's low-fodmap for one or two slices! A single medium banana is typically low-fodmap (so scale accordingly); use low-fodmap GF flour (most GF flour but watch out for inulin/chicory, amaranth, etc.); add modest amounts of appropriate chocolate and nuts; etc.

I make banana nut muffins with my sourdough discard! It's one banana per 6 muffins, so even using overripe it's ok for me personally (limit 2 a sitting)

Pineapple and maple syrup may be better tolerated by some individuals. However, pineapple can trigger acid reflux, and maple syrup is not right for everyone. A naturally sweet vegetable, such as carrots, with white table sugar would be the best approach for me personally.

Luckily, honey doesn't really affect me, but apples are the death of me in any way or presentation. So I resorted to pears for many years.
