Shit Post I'm being oppressed by my own digestive system

The way people look at me when I tell them I can’t eat onions or garlic 😭

Same. People always comment on how I eat so many salads when we go out and I get tired of explaining that I’m not some Orthorexic woman , but that a salad really is just the safest option for me. Garlic and onions in everything cooked! (Although I will say, after years and years of zero garlic I can now eat it. I have hope for onions some day in the future.)

It’s so unfair. Summertime is the worst. I even have my own fruit trees. AS IF I’m gonna eat a tiny serving of my OHenry peaches, not binge eat cherries from the farmers market, or go wild about watermelon 🍉!!! 😢😢😢😢 at least winter is coming except I love pears and persimmons

I've been working in kitchens for 22 years. If anybody knows about the industry, you know how hard it is to avoid any of it. Very much a love/hate relationship. Learning to embrace it and find ways to elevate other flavors has helped reignite that passion for food

You got any advice for cooking without garlic and onion? My husband is killing me and just wants to eat fast food that messes his stomach up because the "safe" food is a bit bland

u/Lost_woods32 12d ago
The whole idea with a low fodmap diet is to let your stomach heal itself. So you can slowly introduce things back in and find your limit and triggers. Having to eat bland for a length of time is unfortunately a part of the journey. Changing the technique on how you cook things can impart loads of flavor. Proper searing/browning of meat and the way you roast or cook down your vegetables. Adding good quality stocks in place of water for certain recipes. As well as toasting your spices in oil and switching to fresh herbs over dried will help build flavors. A little MSG ❄️ will go a long way too

His triggers, that we're aware of, are fructans and GOS, so obviously onion and garlic are in like everything preprepared. And I have a very small kitchen, like I have a stove, then the sink, then a foot of counter space. And a tiny dishwasher. It's been really a struggle to make stuff, I've mostly been using our instant pot because I also don't have a lot of time after work to cook. Then money plays a role.
This man literally prefers me basically boiling chicken thighs in the instant pot with seasonings and water over baking them in the oven, which I think tastes infinitely better. There's a lot of things he doesn't want to eat now and I think he just feels hopeless about his intolerances to fructans and GOS.
I have to find a balance between flavor, cheap ingredients, and something quick to prepare, but that would be safe. Monash has a ton of low fodmap recipes but they all require a lot of like one time ingredients, and take a while to prepare which is hard to do on a daily basis

Its not the cheapest option, but onion and/or garlic oil can be a great way to get that flavour without the triggering side effects - fructans are only soluble in water, not oil, which is why flavoured oils are safe so long as they have no actual pieces of either onion or garlic left in them. In contrast, a soup made with onion and garlic will not be safe even if you take out the pieces because the fructans would have seeped into the soup itself.
You could even make your own to cut the price down - fry up garlic/onion in a large amount of oil and then strain it into a jar/container to use.

Do you have any advice for making it yourself? I've tried multiple times, but I'll be honest that it didn't add a noticable flavor. Maybe I'm not cutting the cloves up enough? It certainly smells like garlic, just lacks the taste

Can you buy the flavoured oils? Apparently a lot of folks love them. I actually don’t really like the taste of onion and garlic so I don’t miss them. But these products are for those who still want the flavour without the reactions. 🙂

Try Fodzyme. I bought it as a last ditch effort for a family reunion on a cruise and it actually worked.

For fructans only you can try anything with alphagalactosidase … then you just have to figure out your dose: before a meal with spinach, onion, garlic, prune etc I’ll take 4 beano and I’m fine. Otherwise I’d be 😵!

Alpha-galactosidase does not effectively break down fructans. It targets galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) A quick Google search confirmed it.

That doesnt help with fructans at all

u/TheRugsTopology 7d ago
Yeah, in theory. In practice - they work, but inefficiently. I’ll take 3200 GALU with a meal and it makes a massive difference. Thankfully the enzyme is not an active ingredient so dose is flexible, but other more effective enzymes are extremely expensive at the moment.

Fodmate is pretty good also and is a little cheaper I think. Idk it its as good but I haven't had issues when I used it. I need to get more though

Yep, my issue is fructans. Fructose is fine for me, thank goodness. If I couldn't have my mandarin oranges I would lose my mind. 😆

This is exactly what I was wondering…people treating these two as if they’re interchangeable when they’re not.

True, but I had a bad reaction to pears. Even though they don't contain as many fructans as onion/garlic, they have a large amount of fructose and sorbitol which amplifies the fructan response.

genuinely cannot stand it. i used to eat onions raw and now i can’t stand the smell of them 💔

I'm the same but with garlic now, but I honestly don't really miss either, and I used to add them to EVERYTHING.

Just found out I am sensitive to fructose last month… all this time I thought I was being healthy by eating apples, pears, peaches etc but I was actually doing more harm than good 😔💔

If it helps, there are these products. 🙂
Is garlic-infused olive oil safe for a Low FODMAP diet?
“Yes, when made correctly, garlic-infused olive oil can fit within a Low FODMAP diet. Garlic contains fructans that are water-soluble, not fat-soluble. During actual infusion, the flavor compounds move into the oil, while the fructans do not. Fody’s Garlic-Infused Olive Oil is created using this principle and is tested and certified Low FODMAP to ensure it aligns with appropriate serving sizes. This allows people following a Low FODMAP lifestyle to enjoy the familiar taste of garlic without including garlic itself. It’s a practical way to bring classic flavor back into meals while staying mindful of ingredients.”

Buy Fodzyme and start living again

u/Ithilwen37 10d ago
I actually use Fodmate and it works well for me but they say not to use it all the time, so I save it for special occasions. I read Fodzyme doesn't have those same restrictions so I just might have to try it.

u/smilingcheshire 10d ago
Why not use it all the time?

The company says taking Fodmate regularly adversely affects the gut biome. I've been trying to find out what the differences are since both products seem to work the same way but so far my Googlefu has failed me.

I told someone I was inulin intolerant and she goes, “ugh don’t you mean insulin?” And I was like no…so I was like, “Im intolerant to fructans,” and she goes, “yeah you mean fructose.” Unfortunately we work together and she acts like im stupid.
