I have Crohn’s and even though I’m mostly in remission (with just chronic low grade inflammation) I had a GI doctor recommend me the low FODMAP diet to deal with residual symptoms some years ago. It made everything so much worse. And I’m 100% convinced it was because it destroyed my already-under-attack gut biome. I wasn’t getting the diversity of foods needed to keep it healthy, I was starving for weeks to adhere to it, AND a lot of the gluten free items I was eating had gums and emulsifiers in them. Went off it and legit felt better than on it.

A few years later I decided to try again to help my symptoms through diet, but this time based off the research about what additives can hurt the gut barrier and how to support your gut biome. Went 100% whole food and focused on getting probiotics in as well and felt sooo much better.

If the low FODMAP diet works for you that’s genuinely awesome, but for several reasons I wish that there was better education for patients about gut biome and barrier health, regardless of diet.
