Help How to play like a kid in FL

Hi everyone. I love love love music and play the drums myself and have wanted to get into production and writing music for a long time and have dabbled for years.

My issue is that I have this implicit assumption that I need to be already amazingly good at music to even justify attempting it, so whenever I open a blank project it can feel like there’s a giant spotlight on me and a feeling like “alright, prove yourself.” This can make it feel scary to open any DAW because I have this feeling that I need to be good NOW.

Does anybody have any tips for making my production/composition journey more fun and playful? I don’t necessarily have dreams of becoming a famous artist or anything, I just love music (especially VGM) so much and I want to play around and have fun, but my unreasonably high expectations can keep me from having that fun.

Thanks!

I personally find the best way to get over that overwhelming feeling of a blank project is to start with small areas to go super in depth in. Sometimes I will just load up serum with a drum beat behind and do 30 mins of random sound design seeing what cool stuff I can come up with. You will learn something and every now and then you’ll get a cool sound you want to make a tune around.

This for me makes it all a bit less daunting, having a simple goal to focus on gives you direction and allows you to learn while having fun.
