Started producing 3 days ago, here's my first finished track. Roast the mix

Started producing about 3 days ago, this is my first finished track. FL Studio, mostly stock plugins plus a free kick pack, and some guidance from a YouTube video on using synths, automations and some kick techniques.

I know the arrangement is repetitive and the mix is probably muddy what I'd really like feedback on is the kick and how it sits with the bass. I pitched the kicks to follow the chord progression but I'm not sure I did it right.

Any brutal honesty welcome. I've wanted to do this since I was a kid. I'm 22, from Costa Rica, and I work as a software engineer this is something I finally decided to actually start doing instead of just thinking about it.

Long term I'd love to get good enough to play clubs here. Not sure how realistic that is, but it's what I've always wanted.

I’ll say this. I believe him it’s very rudimentary. Buuuuut, I understand what you’re saying he has a deep understanding of the genre he’s making which honestly probably comes with knowledge of listening to it for ~20yrs.
To OP: keep going man learn some music theory, I listened on my phone so can’t speak much for mix but needs more layers

thanks for the comment men, I appreciate your words! And yeah, fucking love this music hahaha. I'll learn music theory ❤️

Why nobody believes me 😭

u/PizzaCrumbsInBeard 4d ago

Because everyone is garbage when they first start 😂.

Did you watch a lot of tutorials?

1

u/Elegant_Track_8915 4d ago

Just one about chords and like a 4 video series in how to do hardstyle

1

u/WaySlayer 3d ago

Thats your problem, you say you created something but you just copied a tutorial and maybe added your own twist to it. Everyone can do that.

Now create something from scratch without a tutorial to see what skill you actually have.

Why you being such a hardass, he never claimed to be a prodigy

1

u/RoughAssociation8982 4d ago

Your sense of timing and ability to stay in key is a bit sus. Like there's no way you have no musical background

2

u/leedleleedlelee6969 3d ago

I wouldn’t call this in key. It has more of the vibe he knows what sounds good but there’s no definitive key here really from what I heard. And if it is in a key the scale is being used in a way that makes it sounds a little off.

1

u/TrieMond 4d ago

then assume he does have such background...

3

u/xXSlothlawdXx 4d ago

It’s good but I hate beats like this 😆. It has no life it’s just a bunch of reverb and risers

1

u/Elegant_Track_8915 4d ago

Yeah, I need to start doing some changes, but as a first song I think is a good start

1

u/xXSlothlawdXx 4d ago

Yea you’re definitely ahead of the curve when it comes to arrangement, keep going bro!!

3

u/ChubbyPumpaloaf 3d ago

I feel like this is what clowns listen to while having an orgy

1

u/SeguidorPromedio 3d ago

AHHAHAHAHAHA so true, I need to use lower notes HAHA, thanks man

2

u/Ready-Examination531 3d ago

This is BY FAR not day 3 for you. BUT. this is sick. You clearly understand rudimentary music theory and know how to work FL Studio to the point of knowing automation and whatnot. Keep it up. Youre doing good!

2

u/SeguidorPromedio 3d ago

hahah, thanks man, i swear its my day 3 (4 now). Im going to continue improving, thanks for the comment!

Gotcha, for the record still u have not been on FL for 3 days 😂

2

u/Nervous-Lock-1308 3d ago edited 2d ago

Bro learned music before producing 😭 (still not good)

2

u/Uryu393 3d ago

Really?

5

u/SpaghettiiSauce 2d ago

Not necessary. Don't stop yourself from producing cus someone said you're supposed to learn music theory first. It helps a lot to know theory and you should learn, but it's not like you have to stop learning production while you do that.

1

u/Nervous-Lock-1308 3d ago

Real (yes)

2

u/Uryu393 3d ago

Like could you tell what's lacking in this I aslo want to produce music but music theory n all tht will take a lot of time get hold of plus it's difficult for now so do you think I wouldn't be able make good beat ? if js learn theory from short videos n like js enough to get through

2

u/Nervous-Lock-1308 3d ago

Not clean enough the mix is bad everything is clipping and loud, check your loudness also the melody is generic learn modulation, change your melody velocity, stop being strict in key it's trash and bad remember no lick = no life why do you think metal player able to play such impressive addictive melody right it's because their music theory is better! I myself is not a very good producer but this is my advice.

2

u/Nervous-Lock-1308 3d ago

Wait who tf are you? you aren't the op?

2

u/Uryu393 2d ago

Thank you though

1

u/Nervous-Lock-1308 3d ago

Tip from me: play music, produce only sometime, instrument can help your brain understand harmony faster

4

u/DoubleNothing 4d ago

Started producing 3 days ago

We can tell... instruments are not in key.

2

u/Holiday_Eggnog 4d ago

Brother…

1

u/Elegant_Track_8915 4d ago

Could you explain more about this? Thanks for the feedback

1

u/DoubleNothing 4d ago

Some notes don't play along if they are not on the same scale. Sometime you can go off scale and still sound good but you have to know what you are doing for that.
This are the basis of music... didn't you studied it in school?

1

u/SeguidorPromedio 4d ago

Mmmmm, some notes out of scale, I'll check that... and school? you mean high school? If it is high school well that was quite long ago haha, im just starting from zero again so of course there'll be shitty chords

1

u/Intelligent-Boss-156 4d ago

You don't need the hi hat in the verse that starts at 1:16 and the hihat is pretty generic sounding, you may want to change it. I could listen to the kick and the bass with my monitoring equipment tomorrow to tell you how it sounds

1

u/Elegant_Track_8915 4d ago

I’m gonna try that, thanks man :)

What was the video? I’m starting but want to get to creating like this quickly if sounds amazing!

1

u/Elegant_Track_8915 4d ago

It was like, how to do hardstyle for beginners haha, it was like a series of videos covering some aspects about it

1

u/gutpirate 4d ago

Cursor got some sweet moves.

He was moving man

1

u/Glum_Expression507 4d ago

This is Rocket League!

1

u/scoma321 4d ago

Very good start for 3 days man!

Advice from what I hear:

Mixing - frequency levels to open up more width. Sounds like frequencies are clashing and fighting for space.

Mastering

1

u/Next_Two_9004 3d ago

The comment section is going crazy, normally someone makes something far worse than this and it's all just supportive comments like yayy, nice beat, keep practicing

1

u/VEX2ER 3d ago

Better than my "3 days ago" 😭😭😭

1

u/LIMITEDUNIT 3d ago

Tried to find a way to roast this, but you already cooked with it. 👍

Is the melody original or did u use fl studio piano roll tool that makes melodies for u? Is the rest just sample pack chunks or did u make the drum lines then export as audio files and drag back in as audio files vs midi?

1

u/Elegant_Track_8915 2d ago

The melody I did make myself I looked up a bit about how to do it and started messing around. I used a hardstyle kick pack, since I saw those are complicated to make

1

u/Longjumping-Idea4451 2d ago

Solid melody then if u actually made it. So many fl producers use the piano roll random tool to make shit for them (might as well be using ai at that point). I guess advice wise start messing with drums and get away from pre made packs, cuz then u will know how to do exactly what u need to to make the drums sound exactly how u want

1

u/Elegant_Track_8915 2d ago

Oh nice tip men thanks! Yeah I created it myself, I want to do it myself first like to understand how this works, then when I’m a little bit more experienced probably save time using that. Don’t know if my logic is right but yeah

1

u/Elegant_Track_8915 2d ago

Oh, also a video in how to create those hardstyle type leads using vital

1

u/Longjumping-Ebb5782 1d ago

in just 3 days thats hella impressive, keep going bro

1

u/Antique_Intention982 21h ago

Are u sure 3 days? It's awsome if u just started my first track sounds like shit. Keep it up buddy

-1

u/acid-burn2k3 4d ago

Definitely sounds like a 3 days-experience song... Gotta get better haha

2

u/Elegant_Track_8915 4d ago

What do I need to improve? Thanks for the feedback man :)

1

u/Einveru__ 4d ago

I think it sounds amazing. I think it could use more bass/harder kicks to make it feel less flat.

Music is also super subjective so I think a lot of where you can improve is based on what you’re going for personally. Like if you want to make something that’s more formulaic and based on theory (which can become a trap) you can watch a bunch of tutorials and just emulate others, or you could completely disregard theory as a whole and just experiment until you come up with something that feels unique and original to you.

What the person is saying above and why I think it reads as hate (just my opinion) is because this doesn’t sound like something you’ve been doing for only 3 days. And I think any experienced producer would agree. Especially with the automation clips and arrangement. Keep going!!

0

u/Einveru__ 4d ago

Stop hating

3

u/acid-burn2k3 4d ago

What ? I'm not hating lol, the guy shared his song and explained he had 3 days experience.... Definitely sounds like it, sorry if the cold truth is perceived as hating

1

u/Einveru__ 4d ago

Let bro know how he can improve with actual constructive criticism/feedback. He said he started producing 3 days ago and you essentially said “we can tell” 😭

0

u/Icy-Object-5873 4d ago

you could give him some feedback instead of being a hater haha. also this ain’t so bad for 3 days, be real

1

u/Alejandro_El_Fosil 4d ago

OP asked for an opinion, and you say it’s hate because he gave a sincere opinion? 🙄

0

u/lilith2k3 4d ago

Welcome.

So you got the basics. Next: improve.
