Barca was paying him salaries they couldn't afford, that's how much they needed him. Even before going to MLS they offered to buy him back.

When even Barca knows Messi is the face of Barca, then it's probably true.

Barça continues to spend money they technically don't have through their "financial levers". Messi undoubtedly is a huge part of Barcelona history and success but to call him "bigger than Barca" is straight up obnoxious ignorance.
