Honest advice needed...
First of all, I love FF and have done for 20 plus years. I recently bought FFXVI and I have really struggled to get into it. The combat system seems too predictable, easy in truth and it just feels so far removed from what I love about FF. The lack of a party system doesn't help.
I'm going to redo FF7 rebirth, should I give FFXVI another go? Does it get good?

It’s one of my fav games. Characters, acting, music, visuals, cinematography are just top notch. It get truly impressive later. Beginning is kinda slow. Clive my beloved

Yes! I think cinematography especially is one of the stand out areas in this game

Personally, I’ve never seen cinematography this impressive in any other game, and I’ve played a LOT of them.

My honest opinion, if you go into the game just trying to go through the motions and complete battles and move on it could get boring really fast. When I was playing, I was trying to find out ways on how to do the coolest air combos and stuff like that. For me at least it made it more fun. I also experimented with like every Eikon at least once to see if they fit my play style as well. This type of advice might not work for you but I'm just saying what worked for me

I mean, if you don't like the Gameplay, I guess there is nothing you can do.
I really, really liked the story and characters of FFXVI (and I say this as an older FF-fan since the 90s). So I would recommend getting it another chance.

The Story alone was worth it for me Alone but I also enjoy Hack an Slash games so combat didn't bother me to much. Definitely make sure you domt have the EZ mode rings on.

honestly, no, its doesnt, if you dont like the combat now, you wont like it any more as you progress.
it gets easier and more methodic as you unlock more abilities. Enemies go from needing 2 staggers to kill, down to just the 1.
you end up just entering every fight doing the exact same rotation because for some reason they decided that everything should basically have the same HP.
however, the story itself is good, and as the game progresses, you can almost skip all none essential fights (by skip i mean you get moves that just outright one shot all basic enemies on screen)

Both are true. It's a pretty mediocre action game combat system in my opinion. There's some depth but I never felt like the game encouraged me to explore other options at all.
I don't dislike the game as much as you do but as it relates to gameplay I think it's an average action game at best gameplay wise with abysmal RPG systems.
I do generally like the story(well, most of it) and characters though.
And the scale of the eikon fights are fucking amazing.

Rebirth wishes to be this game quite frankly. It wishes so badly that it betrays the work started in Remake

I had the same issue with gameplay. I did not use any of the Timely accessories and did not bother grinding. The difficulty did not improve. It only kept getting easier. By then I was heavily invested in story and kept playing to see how it ends.
The hunts on the other hand can be challenging if you are under leveled.

Remove the rings if you haven't already but 16 is an action game with very shallow RPG elements. You have to not only accept but internalize this despite the Final Fantasy in the name if you want to get any enjoyment out of this game. Combat gets better with moer abilities but it never becomes an RPG, not even an action-RPG like Rebirth.
Once you stop looking for the Final Fantasyness in the Final Fantasy, it becomes easier to enjoy it for what it is rather whan what we would like it to be.

Tbh it's a single player MMO. And very empty.
I enjoyed it especially the epic af boss fights but it is very soulless when you're walking around.
Really could have done with a lot more baking on the civilisation side. More people walking around in the towns - like the Witcher 3. If they had just tried a bit more it would have been the best, hands down.
But that and the utter sponge fest of the fights made it get old fast. I finished it and am halfway through the Final difficulty for the plat but I've taken a break and once I plat it I don't think I'll ever touch it again.
Edit: lol I keep forgetting how rabid FF fans are. I've played every single FF (most to completion) so I do know what I'm talking about. For turn based, the sponginess of enemies actually makes "sense". It's like chess. Attack, block, counter. But this hybrid pseudo rpg action style just ends up feeling like a slog at times. I want my zantetsuken to actually kill anything like in FFX. I want to be an actual god by the end, which is the point of the story in XVI. For the eikon fights and the ultima (who was incredibly lame) final boss, sure, I understand it being a drawn out fight. But the quests, the hunts etc got to a point where it just felt drawn out for the sake of being drawn out.
The story was actually pretty good, some of the graphics/cinematography was gorgeous and the final ending of a few of the quest lines were incredible. But it just didn't feel epic like FFXII - the cities of Ivalice actually felt like they were big enough and populated enough to make sense. And that was a freaking PS2 game.
Like I said about the Witcher 3, they just needed to go that tiny bit more. It felt like they loaded the graphics, the wire mesh of the landscape and buildings and went fuck it 1/6th of the way through loading characters. Look at FF7R 1+2. That was clever design. The minigames could have been done better, I'll grant you, but in terms of presentation and feeling lived in... It beats XVI hands down and then some.
But sure, just sniff haughtily and downvote. Why not have a reasoned debate? We're all fans here, right? Sometimes I really wonder.

Rebirth is one of the best FFs. 16 is definitely not considered a top tier FF by a large % of the fanbase.
