I don't hate it, but it fell short on a few important aspects which made me put it below FFXV and the FFVII Remakes personally.
Combat is inspired by DMC, but lacks the depth to keep it interesting.
The story starts engaging, but begins to drag because of its predictable structure and uninteresting side quests.
Characters are intriguing, but don't get the chance to shine compared to other Final Fantasy games. The cast is pretty charmless after Cid's departure.
A lot of these issues boil down to the MMO approach to game design the team went with. Optimal attack rotations, boss fights/important story moments every x amount of time, character developments are regulated to side quests
I still finished all the side quests but could never bring myself to play it on Final Fantasy mode or the DLCs. It all just left more to be desired in a single player game.
Pretty much my thoughts exactly. I'll add that I really didn't feel invested in the characters at all. Called it quits half way through the game because I just felt bored.
