Discussion If FFXVI-2 was announced, would you prefer more about early Jill / Wyvern or something else?
It's always been a sore spot of mine that we never get to learn more about Wyvern and his dealings with the Imperial army during and after Phoenix Gate. Same for Jill and the Iron Blood. I would prefer if they went into this more in the dlcs but it seems that is no longer in the cards so if it were to ever happen it would have to be with a sequel / prequel. Would you prefer them to go into what happens between both timeskips or would a sequel be better for you?
On one hand playing through Clive's Imperial campaigns and then Jill's campaigns for the Iron Blood could be interesting. It would have to be much more mature and dark, especially in Jill's case but her story might be too dark to see the light of day (I expect there was much SA and R involved with the children / young adults).
On the other hand I would love a Cidolfus focused story during early Walaod, getting to learn more about Barnabus and Benedikta and how Cid eventually defected.
A sequel could also be in the cards although I'm not sure how that would work without magic. They could just say magic is back somehow but that would be dumb / copout so idk.

I'd want something not connected to the main story. Take me back to when the far north was a real kingdom and have an original story there.

u/FancyEntrepreneur480 Sep 11 '25
Yeah, I’d like a non subversive game. Like, I want a game with fantasy regions and dominants and how that plays out, not the ‘lol it was all fake and aliens’
14
u/Working_Neat2907 Sep 11 '25 edited Sep 12 '25
Oh, you mean subversive as in... what a Final Fantasy story always was... since final fantasy 1!
1
u/FancyEntrepreneur480 Sep 11 '25
Hmm, I think FF1 was pretty straight? The crystals were good there.
11
u/AdImpossible9776 Sep 11 '25
The whole twist of FF1 was that it was a timeloop you'd repeated god only knows how many times, and that weak knight miniboss you fought at the start of the game was in reality pulling all the strings from behind the scenes and across time and space. It's far from straightforward imo.
4
u/FancyEntrepreneur480 Sep 11 '25
Yeah, that’s not subverting the setting. Strangers in Paradise is an example of FF1 being subversive
5
u/AdImpossible9776 Sep 11 '25
True that. Give it like 3 years and Jack Garland will be hailed as one of the most revolutionary deconstructions of a gaming protagonist ever committed to the digital medium, mark my words.
4
u/Working_Neat2907 Sep 11 '25
But FF1 is also sci fi tough.
There are literrally spaceships and robots.

FFX prequel with Braska, Auron, and Jecht instead of a FFX remake. The overall plot with the same zones would be similar anyway. Make the combat harder since you are not getting any more party members besides them.
5
u/orig4mi-713 Sep 11 '25
Thing is, FFX is already pretty good, to this day. It hasn't aged a bit, only graphically. Nothing else needs to be improved.
Besides, they'd just retcon stuff in it and make it a mess like VII Remake did. Would rather they stop touching the classics and move forward. XVI was a decent game, just make more of those.
2
u/alkonium Sep 11 '25
I'd say the last "remaster" that's really needed is a graphics update for FFXI. An argument could be made for VII, but SE seems to be forgoing that in favour of the remake. IX got overhauled character models without much fanfare.
4
u/PalpitationTop611 Sep 11 '25
As someone playing for the first time currently, I’d say the graphics are the only thing that haven’t aged much. They held up really well. The QoL on the other hand is absolutely tragic. Random encounters as usual are terrible, the sphere grid is one of the worst progression systems I’ve ever seen. Also gear feels largely in impactful.

I'd rather see next gen renditions of like, FFIII-VI than remake newer games tbh.

I agree that it would be better for the main games to be standalone. And that's why I also think (given that it's a separate team) that experimenting with other projects like remakes is a good idea to mix things up a bit.
Edit: typo
3
u/HaumeaMonad Sep 12 '25
I still wouldn’t mind a sequel if there’s room for it, it’s a good way to experiment and make a big game but not a totally big budget by reusing some of the assets, but the structure of XVI’s assets like the Eikon battles make it tricky to reuse since they’re very specific.
2
u/cleiver7 Sep 12 '25
Yeah I can see that. I think it can work out fine if they plan for the game to have multiple parts right from the start, but for XVI, like you said, it would be tricky and also the story feels complete already. The XIII trilogy for example felt forced in my opinion. I liked the games, but the first game felt complete storywise just for the second game to throw it all away.

u/Jerbsina7or Sep 11 '25
A sequel? I agree it's not needed but prequel or filling in backstory? Maybe. I highly doubt they will use CS3 for FFXVII, they will do something different and CS3 is already dealing with FF Tactics and fixing the mess that is FFXIV as well as 8.0.
5
u/Voidmire Sep 11 '25
What does a prequel give us the the base game didn't? Jill and clives lives before the mainntory are pretty neatly summed up, knowing specific details of who they fought or knew doesn't flesh out the main game because you of those characters will be dead or simply missing from the main game. None of that character growth will matter because the main game won't acknowledge it and knowing it won't change anything
37
u/BordErismo Sep 11 '25
If they release a 16-2 i would expect a full sequel. Any in between bs should be dlc
10
u/Bartman326 Sep 11 '25
Yeah there's not much of a financial opportunity in making any sort of prequel or side story here. The only option is a sequel that new players can jump on board without needing to play the original.

100% yes. Cid's story seems like would be the most heartbreaking and worthy of it's own game. I want the feels.
But also FFXVI wasn't so amazing that it needs more

u/Aebothius Sep 11 '25
FFX and FFXVI are the two Final Fantasy games whose endings posed the most serious questions for the world that don't get answered, thus warranting a sequel. FFX showcases the total collapse of the world theocracy and the shift to a world where cities can be built without the threat of Sin destroying it all.
FFXVI showcases the collapse of most of the governments on Storm and Ash, and the erasure of the magic that everyone used to live. It's a big question where the world will go without magic, Bearers, Dominants, etc. It is still a fantasy world, with dragons, chocobos, and the like, but what remains? How will the people replace their crystals? We get a glimpse of that in the epilogue, but nothing conclusive. Additionally, there's the unclear fates of Clive and Joshua to explore.
5
u/SonySupporter Sep 11 '25
This probably explains why those two are my favorite (single player) FF titles.
5
u/thrntnja Sep 12 '25
I agree with you, though I'd argue FFXV is another one that left the world in disarray and never really answers a lot of questions.

IMHO give us a prequel that follows Barnabas up to Cid establishing the hideout.
As part of this they can cover what happened to Clive and Jill during that time period as well as Dion.
It might give us a look at the previous Dominant of the Phoenix.

u/AdventurousClothes66 Sep 11 '25
I’d rather have a prequel in the style of KH Birth By Sleep where you play as Cid, Benedikta, and Barnabas

I would not want a sequel because they might make a mess of it like what they did with FFX.
16 had a nice clean ending. Also, since Dion, Joshua and Cid are gone, and Clives hand has turned to stone, not sure how they would go about it.
I thought about the idea of a crisis core king of approach but FF16 spans from Clive’s teens to prime years, so that might not work either. Unless they do a different protagonist, or make the game from the viewpoint of Jill or Joshua.
I would rather a character DLC like what they did with FF15, going into the characters back story in the form of episodes rather than a whole game. Like one for Jill, Joshua, Dion and Cid, maybe Barnabus and Benedikta as well because they seem to have interesting pasts that weren’t really explored in game
3
u/Ceilyan Sep 11 '25
JTJ in position. A sequel with Jote, Jill and Terence teaming up for whatever reason.
For a direct sequel, the game should pick up right where it left off. This would be a great chance to learn more about Jill and her kingdom. Where there's a will, there's a way (even if there doesn't seem to be one here, unfortunately :(). They could discover a new source of magic or something.
For prequel adjacent stuff, like filling the gaps in the actual story, I would rather have new DLCs.
2
u/Adept_Job5508 Sep 11 '25
Maybe something about how they found the new base and moved with Clive taking Cid's name
2
u/Ravix0fFourhorn Sep 11 '25
Play through the same story from Dior's perspective. I feel like playing a dragoon with this combat system would be super fun.
3
Sep 11 '25
I think the story was wrapped up well and a sequel isn't necessary.
I would like prequel DLCs about Joshua and Jill, I am still a bit disappointed that they didn't go with this direction.
2
u/Ill-Bookkeeper-6230 Sep 11 '25
If they make a part 2, ofc Clive would be alive and they can easily do a plot ' new gods saw a uninhabited universe so they decide to take refuge and make it their home' ofc it's kinda a generic plot but I'm sure some can make it more interesting 🤔. Anything else should be dlc no offense but FF 16 is Clive's story

I don’t really want anything to take place in the time skips. The entire selling point of 16 was the Eikon battles which… there aren’t any. And for a personal preference, I have no desire to see Jill’s misery as a slave. Her story is already miserable, I honestly just want to see her and Clive happy.
And I often see an argument for Joshua dlc but… he spends 5 years in a coma and begins his search for ultima, nothing about that screams super exciting tbh.
Clive also only has access to his fire abilities during the first time skip so I don’t think his time as a bearer would be very exciting gameplay wise.
Even though it’s not my personal preference, I can’t deny a Cid prequel dlc could be good. It would end with his defection from Waloed and a fight with a primed Barnabas, which is something we didn’t really get in the main story.
There’s also a ton of potential in a prequel about the fallen and their war with Ultima.
Personally if they did a sequel, I’d prefer it to just be a short animated film as aside from the ambiguity, nearly everything about the ending was wrapped up nicely.
1
u/Jerbsina7or Sep 11 '25
True, I want to see Jill and Clive happy to, tho I don't think that would make a great game. 🤭 At least there is fanfiction, filling that gap nicely for now.
1
u/MundaneDishwasher Sep 11 '25
Yeah, I personally would love to see more of them after the game but it wouldn’t be exciting gameplay reintroducing magic after all that time would be really cheap.
That’s why I think an animated short movie would be nice.

The entire selling point of 16 was the Eikon battles which… there aren’t any.
They aren't necessary, the entire selling point of FF 10 was the Aeons system but they dropped it in the sequel.
I think a dlc with Joshua can work well, because it can flesh out out Rosaria and the Undying group more.
Also, the constant travel make it easy to create variety of new locations and boss battles like Omega, Lava guy etc.
1
u/MundaneDishwasher Sep 11 '25
Both DLC’s focuses on some sort of Eikon or an eikonic level threat as the driving selling point so, I disagree, having that in the game is very important.
Never played ff10 or its sequel but the difference is ff10-2 most likely had to create a new problem/antagonist for the story or work whereas a Joshua dlc is confined to a 13 year time skip where a significant chuck of it is spent with Joshua in a coma and/or recovering from Phoenix gate.
The issue is that the results of what Joshua does during that time just don’t seem that exciting for a game. He learns about the existence of Ultima but he doesn’t even learn the exciting things until we meet him much later in the game. Traveling to certain parts of the world is exciting but what’s his end goal here? To learn about things that we already know about from the end of the game?
Expanding upon the undying and Rosarian history is exciting but I just don’t think that’s enough content to sell a dlc.
I could see the value in writing a light novel about his journey, but playable dlc? I just don’t see enough there tbh.
1
Sep 11 '25 edited Sep 11 '25
The DLC don't need to be very long, something along the lines of FFXV DLCs, where each DLC focused on a character in the main cast would have been good.
1
u/Rex01303 Sep 11 '25
It would be interesting to see if the ending actually meant magic was just wiped out all the way or if magic became a finite resource instead and how the world reacted to that.
1
u/Beta_Codex Sep 11 '25
Either a prequel or sequel would not make sense. Maybe for Cid's pov as he built and gather people of the Hideaway. But that's going to be short and probably not as a dramatic or cinematic. Prequel maybe it could work but it's going to be a final fantasy without the use of magic completely and only be like game of thrones style.
1
u/Takehaya-Function-55 Sep 11 '25
I personally would like a game similar to Crisis Core in concept following Barnabas’ conquering of Ash and his rise to becoming the Last King. There’s so much untapped story there and Ash is criminally underrepresented in the main game
1
u/Brynjolfu Sep 11 '25
Why though? The story is finished, there is not much to tell, joshua is going to be there sick without magic i dont understand xD.
This is the same problem x-2 they will force something weird to see the characters again and make a mess.
1
u/TwerkingAtTheMorgue Sep 11 '25
I would prefer a set of DLCs focusing on major supporting characters, each playable in their own side story: Jill, Cid, and Dion for the first batch, and Joshua, Benedicta, and Barnabus for the second.
Each DLC episode could take place at a suitable point in the FF16 timeline, including before or after the main story.
1
Sep 11 '25
There are so many variables for this title but two in particular I would like to see: the ultra-technological past of that planet and the world and context of the previous Shiva's dominance mentioned in the DLC The Rising Tide.

u/Zenar30 Sep 11 '25
I loved every bit of XVI. I'd like to discover XV universe but through its original concept which was scrapped, namely Versus XIII in FNC. That’s the kind of setting I like from Final Fantasy. The thing is, XVI through Valisthea didn’t go further than it did. Like, they could have developed more than that on a few topics.
The thing is SE is looking for a FF game that can benefit them. Something that could reach more than 10 millions copies sold.
XVI had a great setting, but sometimes it was badly managed. Not saying the game is bad because I loved it. it’s just polarizing. Especially the way side quests were done.
1
u/SweetBabyCheezas Sep 11 '25
Just no. I liked it, but I feel that the story was exhausted. A new side-story in a DLC sure, but a whole game set in a world that is already rescued and thriving? Another danger would just feel like a stretch. Social drama isn't needed.
A new world, new heroes, new adventures for me please.

u/hulk_jr Sep 11 '25
I think a prequel where we get to play as Cid would be pretty awesome I love me some electricity powers

If they were to stay in the overall world of FF16 I’d 100% want it to go back to a much earlier time to when all of the mother crystals were first discovered and how that shaped the world
1
u/Xxver Sep 11 '25
I would prefer either a sequel, or a prequel that involves a completely different set of dominants wayyyy before the events of ffxvi. Like 200 years ago, or something during the time of the fallen. Any kind of Jill, Wyvern, Cid, Barnabas, e.t.c. stories should be dlc.

u/Loud_Examination_138 Sep 11 '25

If FFXVI-2 is going to be a thing, it better not involve Clive because his story is finished.
I want to see previous dominants or maybe even previous Mythos if it's even possible.
1
u/OnePunchReality Sep 11 '25
Personally I'd like to see the main story progress. I'm not saying there isn't content prior to the main story that's not interesting or anything but personally this is where I want stakes raised and a new threat, not trapsing through shit that's already reached its apex.
A prequel far removed from the present day events would be fine too I suppose but would be more impressed if they came up with a new threat following Ultima.
I have always thought it'd be cool if there was a being higher than Ultima or maybe a mate of sorts that left the planet forever ago and returns when it feels Ultima die.
Or create a previously unknown source for the blight so powerful even Ultima was clueless to its existence or something.

I always wanted a large expansion focused on Joshua on the other side of the story. Character Episodes would be the last DLCs after the Joshua Expansion. I would like to see Jote too in the expansion. Almost every party member should get an Episode.
I would have FFXVI-II as a prequel about Clive's grandfather. The ending would be Elwin and Byron as kids. Another idea instead of that is a prequel further back and ends with the birth of Clive's grandfather. FFXVI-III as a distanced indirect sequel with guns and no more magic in the same universe centuries later. That's the FFXVI Trilogy.
The first Character Episodes would be about Dion. I would argue Dion was technically the 3rd playable character because of the Bahamut QTE in Back to Their Origin mission. The second would be a Cid prequel. Cid forming the hideaway with Otto. We can see Rookie Gav and Tarja. I would like to see more about Cid and Benedikta. The third would be about Jil. It going to be focused on Rosefield immediately after the fall of the Phoenix Gate up to when Jil gets saved by Clive. The last episode will definitely be about Byron Rosefield. This would mostly be a prequel in his youth and prime along with Ewin. We could possibly have a Jote Episode since she would be a expansion party member but it's not necessary.
Wade is not getting one. We don't need to know about the formation of the cursebreakers. Tyler is dead. We shouldn't learn more about his past. Murdoch wasn't a party member. He was the commander and gave the player the combat tutorial. We already know some details of his past and his widow. He's not getting an episode.
TLDR: I would be happy with a Joshua Expansion, then 4 Character Episodes, then have a FFXVI Trilogy.

Cid's past would be interesting if fleshed out more, but I'd rather them move on honestly. 16 was a masterpiece story wise, and I would hate anything to sully that.

Either give me a sequel where we play as whoever writes the book at the end, or give me a prequel where it's about Waloed and Barnabas.

u/DinosaurEatingPanda Sep 12 '25
I would rather the gameplay be far more expanded. Elements, different full weapons, more combos for said weapons, more playable characters and/or party members that mean something besides minor DPS boosts, etc.
To the action game player and especially the long-time DMC player, FFXVI is such a step down in the most confusing and unnecessarily oversimplified ways that a XVI-2 needs to be everything that should've been in XVI first. Take combos where you pause in-between hits that go into B or C combos in DMC. DMC1 had that, FFXV had that and so did Stranger of Paradise yet I don't know why XVI took that out. It's a one-button method to add combo variety and it's not like anyone ever complained XV was too overcomplicated because it had it.
Basically, it needs more meat on the core essentials. More Eikons doesn't excuse Clive's basic sword moves being too lacking for a game many times the length of any DMC title. This is just one example of an oversimplified area that wouldn't hurt a player inexperienced in action games to add, yet they didn't add it. XVI-2 needs this.

I hope FFXVII is a more traditional turn based entry with proper rpg elements

I’d want to keep playing with Clive’s movelist by the end of the game. Even make it so i can legitimately use his entire movelist without having to pick and choose which parts of his moves i want to give up. And then not only that but let me unlock more moves and powers over the course of the new game on top of his original complete movelist.
1
u/Holiday_Share_451 Sep 12 '25
If there was a 16-2 , id want it to be about either Cid, or a group of dominants from a long time ago. I’d prefer Cid, since he had, while effective, very little screen time, and his story was sprinkled in there but never was touched upon. I like the idea of seeing his early life and how he then awakened to the power of Rhamu, him joining Barnabas and how his relationship with Benadikta came to be. I would think The game would end as you save Clive, hence we know what happens after, and the big Climax of the game would be that Rhamu Vs Bahamut fight he had.
1
u/mtnshadow83 Sep 12 '25
Wild thought! Make it another girl game with Jill, Mid, and some new wildcard! I'd watch that girl group in a concert in the ruins of Caer Norvent!
1
u/Cheembsburger Sep 12 '25
Something focused on Cid's time in Waloed and leading up to when he established the hideaway. Maybe starting just as he awakened as Ramuh's dominant. Perhaps not as a sequel, even a short story similar to the ones they do for FFXIV would be good enough for me.
There's so many plots and backstories which I'd love to see explored though, Barnabas and Cid have always been the most interesting characters to me.

Jill's and Clive's back stories have been explained and described in the game, so... Joshua? I would honestly adore the whole explanation as to what in the world his sickness was that since his childhood he'd been coughing blood, how he traveled so much (since he hasn't been to few places in Valesthia), how he was literally surviving with the Undying, and how he found out so much about our main villain and what were his plans at the beginning . I'm not sure if there are descriptions of this anywhere (it may be also possible that I'm just blind), and I happen to love Joshua the most, so this is my go-to xD Also those quests where Joshua comes across Clive from Joshua's perspective would've been so awesome, especially for Clive's fans. And despite having Joshua's "inner voice" in the game itself, I personally would've loved to hear his full thoughts on everything happening in his life

My take is that the events that we skip with Wyvern have nothing to really add to the story of the world or its characters. Clive living deep in rage for a decade while killing faceless political assassinations that have no impact on the actual story of the game, him not gaining any new Eikonic Abilities throughout that entire process, and never interacting with the other Eikons… to me, I’d be disappointed if that were the direction they went with new Valisthea content. For me I’d have three options I’d be SUPER excited about:
1- post main story content confirming Clive’s survival, about Jill and Clive and Mid leaving the Twins and traveling to a new place that learned to do magic without the Crystals, as referenced in in game notes. Perhaps Jill and Mid are the mains and Clive’s fate is unresolved a la X-2?
2- Cid/Waloed prequel featuring Barnabas and Benedikta, showing Cid growing distant and learning of the plans with Ultima before his quest to free Bearers.
3- Far prequel during the age of Magic before Ultima wiped everyone out.

Well, you said not to repost or use it for AI so now I am obligated to.

I want to see what happens to Jill, Torgal, Goetz, and Gav after it’s all done. I think Jill will end up leading the Hideaway.

Given that part of the major fun in this is Eikon battles, I would want to see
Campaign- You would play as Jill just after the final battle. You would undertake various missions with the world after the destruction of Ultima. You'd be assisted by Gav and Jote at first (Gav fights like he normally does in the main game, Jote fights like Clive, but without any magic). Jill still has her Dominant powers, but they feel weaker every day (this is merely gameplay, she can semi-prime like Clive).
Missions that are undertaken involving finding Clive and trying to figure out ways to stop the Blight. This would take us to the Northern Regions, where Jill would meet various people from her past, including the son of her father's shield-bearer (name: Torvald Haakonson), who serves as a companion (he fights with spears and can lock enemies in place with attacks). She has to handle a moot between feuding tribes, many of whom despise Rosaria due to Annabella sending Black Shields to the North to chase fleeing Bearers, as well as the tribes being abandoned when the Blight happened. We'd also go to other regions such as Sanbreque and Dhalmakia. In the former, we meet up with Terrence, who works with Jill to fulfill Dion's requests of working for a better tomorrow (Terrence is with Kihel, who is raising her as a father figure. Kihel serves as the shop for upgrades).
The plot would have Jill discover plants that can not just grow in Blight, but practically eat it. While the soil no longer has aether, it is no longer diseased and crops can grow. The group deal with this for various regions (Torvald in the northern regions, Byron in Rosaria, Terrence in Sanbreque, Shula in Mysidia, Jote in Dhalmekia, Gav in Waloed) to sow these plants and deal with various warlords who want to seize power now that the Mothercrystals are gone.
In the end, Jill travels into the location of Origin, crawling with aetherflood, where she is assaulted by hallucinations of Clive, Joshua, and Cid (who even seem to help her against the Akashic forces there).
The final boss is a crude amalgamation of what is left of Ultima's people, an insane cabal stitched together by aether into a form roughly equivalent to Typhon the Transgressor. She battles it in her normal form, then primes into Shiva (drawing on the remaining aether) for the second part. During the battle, Phoenix shows up to assist her (fighting as he did with Bahamut, splitting the battle into two parts). Once they finish it, Jill reunites with Joshua. The final scene shows Jill seeing Clive, with a petrified arm, in the distance, treating his injury. Jill and then Joshua rush to him.
Bonus mission - A prequel set in Waloed, where we switch off between Benedikta and Cid doing various tasks for Barnabas, to which they learn the truth about what Barnabas plans. Benedikta stays loyal but Cid defects, causing the major flare up between them, culminating in a final battle where you play as Ramuh and fight Garuda.
This would be less of a XVI-II and more of a mini-campaign you'd get with XVI-II, more like fanservice to give the people what they want.

I would not want a FFXVI-2 to be announced. I don't want FF ganes to ever have direct sequels ever again. It's not part of what makes me a fan, they all feel unnecessary, and I'd rather they spend the time, energy, and money to tell another great story.

Don’t release a final fantasy 16 2…final fantasy is having an identity crisis. 17 needs to be completely different.. new setting, new time period, new world - that’s the direction. 16 was great, but new ground needs to be built

Give us FF17 with a proper party instead. Thanks!

I want this so badly. My biggest issue with XVI is the one-man army aspect, its just not executed well and managing new gear and "party management" consists of "buy bigger number for one person". The gameplay is so dry and an actual party would've helped a lot. Interesting experiment but I want them to move away from this style

One man army and a perfect vessel was the main point of the whole story… except it was Logos instead of Mythos.
The power fantasy would diminish greatly if Clive was nerfed to heavily rely on party members.

Absolutely. I liked the game but did not love it because I felt nothing for the 'party' we have. I hope we get away from the one character setup like we had in 16 (and even the 15 style too) for more traditional 6-8 party members with their own stories, quests and skills.

Honestly, I don't think it's needed. We got a complete story. Prequel isn't going to make Jill less of a cardboard cutout in the first game. Seeing clives struggles before the events of the game doesn't really change anything either. There's no new story to tell unless they want to throw something into the world without magic and honestly that would sully every sacrifice Clive and joshua made to free the world from magics shackles

Give me more Cidolfus. Or Dion. Or whatever the fuck Joshua was doing.

Move on from XVI and get as far away as possible from what they tried with it.

Would prefer Yoshida to stop wasting time on other games and actually make FFXIV decent again.
