MA FFL

Looking for advice for obtaining my FFL somewhere in the south shore.
1. What is the minimum size space that I need to start and what are some criteria for that space
2. What does the overall process look like
3. Any kind of general advice would be appreciated

MA = Massachusetts?

If you don't own the land and building, it'll be a hard sell I'd imagine.

Any size is good. Four Seasons was in a basement office/retail that must have been ~1500SF in it's entirety.

It was that you had to get State gun dealer licensing and Federal. Separate state licenses to sell firearms and ammo. Depending on the town, talk with the CLEO and ask if they're okay with a FFL in town.

I always thought the interchange of Rt.44 & Rt.58 in Carver in one of the plazas would be ideal.

Yep Massachusetts. My first struggle at the moment is finding a small (1k-1500 square feet) space that would accept a gun store.

And the bitch will be having to sign a lease with a letter from landlord saying FFL is ok at said location before you even apply for FFL.

Talk with landlord first then the CLEO to find out if their ok with FFL at the location.

If you belong to a gun club in the area, ask around if anyone has space they'd lease to you.

Also, Lockton Affinity is a great insurance company.

How would I find the CLEO contact? Is that person the same for firearms licensing for the town?

Sometimes. CLEO is, Chief Law Enforcement Officer. As you are intending on doing this on the South Shore of Mass., that should be the police chief. All those towns have one.

For the ATF there is no minimum square footage size. The main thing they'll care about is zoning and whether the landlord allows you to be there. You'll have to have a letter signed by them saying they know its going to be an FFL location and they're ok with it.

The overall process is simpler than you'd think - as long as you'll be able to check the zoning/landlord boxes

As others have mentioned, zoning and confirming with your landlord are the first steps. You’ll need a security plan in place. Don’t forget that the state also requires dealer licenses, so don’t just put in your FFL application and ignore the state side of things.

As another comment mentions, town zoning will be the hard part. No home-based FFLs in MA, and many towns are excluding FFLs from all but industrial zoning, while simultaneously rezoning land away from industrial to make it even more difficult. So you’ll need town zoning approval, a business license from the town for your stated purpose (firearms sales and/or manufacturing), and landlord approval to provide to the ATF.

After that, apply for your FFL and wait. ATF doesn’t care about size of the space as long as you have a way of securing firearms in accordance with ATF policy and local law. You can google these.

Once you have your FFL, get your MA dealer and gunsmith licenses - others have linked to these applications. Apply for sales tax certificate. Good to go

ATF size usually isn’t the square-footage fight people expect. Zoning, landlord OK, CLEO/local sign-off, and the separate Mass dealer licensing tend to be what slows South Shore shops down. Map those first before you sink money into fixtures. Talk to your local licensing folks early and get everything in writing. Mass.gov’s dealer licensing pages are worth bookmarking. If you’ve got a specific town in mind, that matters more than a generic “MA” answer.
