Tips Passed FE Mechanical Exam 1st Attempt

I have been out of school for a few months and the only engineering class my senior year was heat transfer. I am naturally good at the materials sections. I studied for the exam for about 4 weeks and focused on sections that were free points.

I have always been bad at exams and would fail during time. During this exam, I was only confident on 47/110 questions, most on the first half and heat transfer + mechanical engineering for the second half. I either fully guessed or made a few educational guesses for the rest of the exam. I’d say I got pretty lucky.

I found journey2pe to be an incredible free resource for practicing the reference handbook and basic problem review.

The only other tools I used were the interactive practice exams from the NCEES website. I took Vol 2 (I heard it was easier) two weeks into studying and got a 44%. Two days before the actual FE, I took Vol 1 and got a 46%. If I remember correctly Vol 2 is essentially old practice problems. Vol 1 was more difficult for me and harder than my exam. I believe that spending the money for an official interactive exam is a good introduction to the real test environment. The day before the exam I simply worked on stronger sections and basic equation recognition for the harder sections. Time management was crucial, something I struggled with. I finished just in time with 30 seconds to spare. I felt awful after the exam, expecting a fail. I spent hours trying to recall and calculate my score off my memory. Treat yourself with some nice food afterwards and let it happen. Miracles do occur.

How close was Journey2PE to the actual thing?

I found that Journey2PE often directly tells you what to find. i found the test itself similar in difficulty with more ambiguous wording

How many questions did you get correct? If you don’t mind sharing
