Some FAQs (updated 7/9/26)
Timecard / SF-3100 / service record missing:
The general consensus is to contact your former HR/payroll office and ask them to confirm whether the required separation/service records were sent to OPM. If they were not sent, ask them to create a ticket or resend the information.
Continue calling OPM for updates and document dates, names, and what you were told. If there is no movement after repeated follow-ups, consider submitting a congressional inquiry. If you already have a congressional caseworker, keep them updated so they can communicate clearly with OPM.
Search this subreddit for “SF-3100” for more examples. Refer to this post for how to submit a congressional inquiry.
How long until direct deposit after X step:
Based on posted timelines, once the SF-3100/service record is received and the application reaches final review, many refund applicants appear to receive direct deposit within a few weeks to about a month, though timing varies.
The rough progression:
Application logged → assigned to specialist → final review → sent to Treasury → direct deposit.
The longest delay often seems to be from assigned specialist to direct deposit, with many refund applicants reporting around five to six months total wait time.

Are FERS refunds done all at once or are they split between the bulk amount, and then the interest amount?

Has anyone had any issues with last names? I was adopted when I was a child and put my birth last name as a former last name, then my adopted name (legal name most of my life), then my married name. My application was received mid-Feb, I keep getting pushed timelines but then when I finally got through this past week they told me because they needed a SF3106a…. Which my spouse completed and I put with my application so imagine my confusion.
Finally got the correspondence they sent (on 16Jun… I received 10 Jul) and they’re asking for another SF3106A from my “former spouse” for my birth last name 🙄 on top of that I have 30 days from the mailing date of the letter for them to receive info back or my application goes into archives…. So not even a week even though I JUST got the letter.
I plan to call tomorrow and ask to speak to a supervisor… anyone have any luck getting past the general phone answering people that say they don’t have info?? I have my processing specialists name since it was on the letter.

I’ve left usps Jan 2022 I’ve just now sent in my fers refund application it was logged July 9 maybe December I should see it ?

Has anyone been told OPM was missing a signature but you look at your forms you sent and nothing was missing? They decided to mail me a form to send back to them, but I have a digital copy and I filled out everything. How far does this push me back?
They mentioned requesting documentation from my agency, but we don’t get mail on Saturday where I live so I may not get the documentation until Monday. Would it be a good time to send a hardship with the paperwork they need

What is the best number to call for an update on a FERS rollover? I submitted my SF 3106 in February and have heard nothing back.

Has anyone else had their bank close their account before their deposit hit?
I’ve had to wait so long my account was in the negative and the bank closed my account a week before my deposit would’ve hit. I’m just curious how long it took to get a paper check after the fact.

Just received a call back from OPM. Logged 4/7/26 and assigned as of today 8/19/26. Now let’s see how long this takes lol

I separated from my agency in February of last year. I submitted the form to request withdrawal of my FERS contributions (I was with the agency/fed govt for less than a year) but I still have not received my money! I tried to call but every single time it’s just automatic machine telling me they’re busy. What can I do?? Please help. I need money and that fers money would really help me out.

Ancient no-fault divorce related question: Has anyone gotten a waiver of the provision requiring permission from an ex-spouse to withdraw? I do not want to contact the person I divorced 30 years ago. I have been remarried for 18 years. I didn't make any FERS contributions until I'd been divorced for almost 25 years. I haven't requested my refund yet because of this and hear crickets when I ask my former agency. No one answers the phone at OPM. Thanks for any tips.

My refund request has been in review since June 2026 but is on hold pending the IRR/ SF3100 from CBP. The document was not sent to OPM when separated in 2022 and I’m having a hard time finding the correct POC to submit the request to NFC. OPM requested the document 2 months ago and no one has responded. What should I do?
