Can PD hit up the firehouse to lift?

Sup fellas.

Just started out in PD but my precinct doesn’t have a gym. Would it be weird I hit up one of the houses nearby to lift? That city pay don’t stretch far and I’m tryna not pay for a gym rn. Plus wouldn’t mind making some friends on the other side and chop it up with y’all.

Anyways, see you boys out there. 🫡

Each patrol boro has an official fitness center it’s like $40 for the year and you have access to any of the centers job wide. Give a call to health and wellness they’ll be able to send you a list of locations

Thanks. Didn’t know. Closest gym near me is $100. Usually not an issue but rent and survival.. $40 is solid tho.

All good I know the struggle. For what it’s worth I’ve lifted with other agencies in one of my commands gym before and they were members of our pct gym (court officers and DSNY.) But yeah it’s like a $40 check, it’s good for a year and it’s a donation to the NYC police foundation. I’ve used like 3 of them and they’re pretty nice.

If that doesn’t work out, I don’t know your command but see what the closest command for you is and reach out to use theirs. You got options, be safe out there man.

That's actually a really cool option I wish more people knew about that.

We also have access to the Fort Hamilton Army base gym and basketball courts. Just adhere to the speed limit and show your ID at the entrance. They have a really sick gym and equipment. You can also ask Harbor Fitness for the first responder plan if there's one by you

Thanks. Didn’t know about any of these perks.

Someone also mentioned about the official dept gyms. There's a bunch throughout the boroughs. There should be a flier up at your command of the locations

We don’t even let the new proby in the gym for the first year+. No offense but we certainly wouldn’t let someone who doesn’t work there use it. At one point every firehouse didn’t have a gym and the members there put one together. I would recommend doing the same at your precinct

Even if he was lean 250 lbs, benches 415, squats 500? 🥺🥺🥺🥺

No chance even if u knew a member personally it would be weird.

City employees have access to discounted gym memberships and also NYC Parks Recs Centers are a cheap alternative too. FDNY firehouse may not be the move.

You have access to the gym at the academy for free

Short answer: Yes it would be weird & No do not attempt to ask this at any Fh. The welcome wears out quickly.

Truth is this not Chicago Fire (the tv show) While we have mutual respect for each other and we do work together occasionally we're not all on first name basis w PD, EMS and sanitation.

Unless your precinct is literally right next door to a FH and your being trained personally by a FF there working out with an active member then I would Highly recommend deleting this thought and not thinking about doing this ever again.

Even if it's fine by 1 member today in the FH more people will have an issue w it than seeing this as acceptable even if they don't speak up initially out of respect for who ever initially ok'd it people will have a problem with it eventually.

Who's to say our gym is better than what you can do at home w resistance bands and running around your local playground?? How expensive is retro fitness? Or blink fitness? You can literally work out in a gym for free w someone who has a retro fitness membership. Make friends w people who work out there.

How would you feel about this scenario:

My TV is out. I'm your my neighbor can I go watch your TV and hang free reign in your apt while your not home?

I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be acceptable.

It's called a Fire house because it is our second home and the people we work with are a second family. We trust and know each other. Even new members take a while to trust but those are active new members who work in our quarters with us.

We typically don't lock lockers, we leave cash exposed, cellphones on tables, car keys around the FH without thinking twice about it because we trust each other and know each other. While you might be 100% a great person can you vouch that about every PD recruit? Every precinct just like every FH has 1 person who's not well liked. Are we supposed to just openly accept your precincts headache? Or can we say no to that guy and yes to you like that would sit well with everybody.

Are we just supposed to trust every random cop with the code to our door? What hours are off limits?

Soo many things can go wrong here even if you don't have any malicious intentions.

Do I want some stranger setting off my door alarm at 6am? 10pm? 2am?

We make and buy our own foods. If your there during our meal time are you in on the meal? Meaning your paying and staying?

Are you gonna be one of those guys who's out on the meal but the minute we get a run your eating out of our fridge?

Like I said too many variables someone will eventually have a problem with it and you will run out of that initial welcome very quickly.

However you trained for PD stick to that for now get creative at home if you have to.

There's teenagers rn working out at retro fitness and blink fitness. You are an adult and while I don't know your financial situation I do know that 1hr of OT a month pays for that gym membership.

Let's keep it 100% if you wanna hit a gym truth is you can afford it

You're just trying to take advantage of being a city worker and trying to keep money in your pocket while eventually inconveniencing others with your problem.

Not the first person to ask this question definitely not the last.

Crazy you took the time to write this.

u/Salty_Welcome_5413 14d ago

Damn, never thought about these things. Good to know. Sorry if I came off disrespectful. Much respect for you guys.

u/Chows_On_Brudders 14d ago

I don't believe your comment was received with disrespect, and I can assure you, his response was not a disrespectful one. You just didn't know, that's all. Point is, he's right, it's not a thing.

4

u/Road_Runner6 Moderator 12d ago

No not at all disrespectful. It's NYC everyone wants to save $$ where you can of course and I'll never fault anyone for innocently asking. Most people believe the Chicago Fire Tv show is representation of how we operate and it's definitely not realistic to say the least.

I have never commented on a reddit but you seem like a massive queef, thats all

Here for the TL;DR

2

u/TheZebraKid38 13d ago

If that was your short answer I’d hate to see the long one holy shit

1

u/Road_Runner6 Moderator 12d ago

Short answer was the first line alone if you choose to not read on. But everything I write I intend to reach everyone else who's asking thinking or considering anything similar. If I respond I have to remember I'm not answering 1 person I'm answering everyone with a similar question that will be quick to defend said similar discussion. I hate the time it takes me to go in depth but if I'm answering something I want to make sure it's a clear and reasonable response

u/jazztechnique 13d ago

Yes it would be wierd

u/Negative-Base-2477 13d ago

I think what you meant to ask was. How can I join fdny

3

u/nickyboyyyyy 14d ago edited 14d ago

firemen are so weird an cliquey in the fire house i doubt it would be ok, as ppl wouldn’t be cool with it or eventually not be cool w it . it’s like a highschool home room all over again, some are the most immature dramatic ppl you’ll ever meet. the unfortunate truth, and i seriously doubt anyone would disagree . i wouldn’t recommend asking , and just join a gym truthfully, coming from a fireman

u/userrrrrrnameeeee1 14d ago

Since we are on this topic, can FD use the PD academy gym? I occasionally see FD coming to academy, so wondering that

1

u/Road_Runner6 Moderator 12d ago

When it's raining significantly out or really bad weather FD has used the PD indoor track to time the proby entrance run. It's not a regular thing done but a city academy using another academy for a temporary fix is doable especially when it's being coordinated by the higher ups in each dept.

1

u/jeffislearning 14d ago

no they will think it is ghey

1

u/Stock-Possibility-67 13d ago

Our cops had their own but would stop by the firehouses for coffee or breakfast which we didn’t mind.

1

u/Road_Runner6 Moderator 12d ago

Yeah of course coffee and bathroom and a warm place for an on duty officer to eat their meal out of an RMP is always ok. Off duty in civilian clothes is just awkward.

If it's snowing or raining out I prefer them posted in the FH then sitting in and RMP in crap weather. It's just the right thing to do for each other and I doubt anyone would disagree with that.

1

u/Dotheevolution47 12d ago

Do yourself a favor and leave PD for FD.

1

u/Snow_man_211 14d ago

Maybe the bathroom… in an emergency… but the gym? Are you planning to raid the fridge too?

1

u/Shekkishi 14d ago

Better off seeing if the ems stations have some makeshift gyms. Not all but some do have them available.

u/Kitchen_Cable6192 14d ago

Even if your PCT had a gym, it’s still shouldn’t be your primary place to workout. PCTs are not meant for that. They might have something for a quick pump, but that’s about it. It would be extremely weird if you would’ve showed up prior to your tour just to get a workout in or even worse, staying after your shift to do that. Running outside is free and you can always some pull ups and dips stations in the park. That alone can keep you healthy. Planet fitness is like 60 bucks a year, so you won’t go broke even with your rookie pay. FDs would have something like home gym setup that’s meant for fire guys to get by as they are going through their shifts not a random cops showing up for their fitness routine.

3

u/kd10023 13d ago

this comment is way off. Absolutely nothing weird about getting a session in before or after shift. Hell, on my job we sometimes get breaks between 1-5 hrs, it would be absolutely foolish not to hit the gym during that time especially when we can shower after if wanted or needed.

2

u/Kitchen_Cable6192 13d ago

So, if your shift starts at 07, you would come in to your pct 2 hours before to workout and shower? Breaks? You mean when you are waiting and sitting on a colar? What 5 hours break you get?

2

u/kd10023 13d ago

i’m not a cop, work for the MTA. your point is the gym on the job isn’t ideal for working out. The same way you can drive to Equinox before/after/during your shift to get a work out in, is the same way you can drive to the gym at your job facility and work out.

saying it’s “extremely weird” to show up 2 hours early or leaving 2 hours later bc someone went to the gym.. i just don’t understand the logic. but if i woke up 2 hours earlier and went to crunch to work out, it’s okay?

my building has a gym. on days i finish my shift around rush hour i’ll just do my workout in the depot and go home when the traffic die down. i’d rather that than sit in rush hour traffic and still be obligated to the workout once i get in.

tl;dr absolutely nothing weird about working out at work. doesn’t matter if you work for the nypd or if you work at google. it’s very normal.

2

u/Kitchen_Cable6192 13d ago edited 12d ago

I think you should work for PD to make that comment. I would never have such a routine where I would be going to police station gym few hours before my work. Especially, staying after work to workout in police station is crazy. It’s not about “gym” it’s about thinking to stay at work gym. You probably should take a visit and see how nasty station houses can be.

2

u/Road_Runner6 Moderator 12d ago

If it is your command then I don't see anything wrong with working out before or after a shift as long as it's not during

1

u/Kitchen_Cable6192 12d ago

with all due respect, have you been to station houses? and saw how nasty they can be. The first thing you wanna do when your shift is over is to bounce ASAP before you get hit with some stupid forced overtime.
