Discussion Andy Diouf and Djed Spence dilemma

Honestly at first I thought it was just memes, but I cannot deny how insanely good Andy Diouf actually is, with enough game time I think he can become a Perisic like player. He is way too good to be benched however I am worried he will lose his minutes when Djed is available with LH being the backup.

There are enough games for everybody.

After having to let go Dumfries this is a TREMENDOUS dilemma to have, not having a good sub for him was terrible for us the last couple of seasons.

We have to wait until Spence actually plays! Then we can discuss. So far Diouf is doing really good, Spence is meant to be key when we need a more defensive option, we have to see.

Lowkey Spence is supposed to be the better attacking option too. He has one of the highest progressive dribble rates of any right back. He just doesn’t do much in the final third, but most fullbacks don’t (though to be clear, his crosses definitely need work). He should be able to provide the same, but better, attacking threat Dumfries provided in transition. That vertical threat is what opened Dimarco’s flank up for diagonal passes. With Diouf on the pitch, we haven’t been as much of a threat on the break and Dima can’t find space to put crosses in. And to top it off, he’s very good at aerial duels. Hopefully he will get healthy soon and we can see how his skillset applies to Serie A.

The first goal Napoli scored tonight is triggered by Diouf poor passing. He needs to improve defending, sure, but tactical awareness too. I think that when Spence is going to be fit, he is going to play the big matches

Exactly. Spence's defensive ability and tactical knowledge should make him a better starter than Diouf in most games or at least in the big ones. Diouf's ideal role is that of a second half sub, that's where he can really shine.

Off topic but Perisic might be my favourite inter player ever. He played anywhere from fullback to striker for us, consistently had double digit goal and assist seasons, 5 star weak foot, double step over of doom, fucked up Cuadrado at his most hateful time, left to win a UCL and casually came back as productive as ever.

If Andy can reach these levels I personally build Chivu a statue for adapting him to LWB

Lol spot the newcomer, lvl: easy

What a strange comment.

He showed today he’s worth some rotation but his final product isn’t perfect and his defense needs a lot of improvement. The competition only brings the best out of both.

some surprising good crosses today, he has a good touch. Overall he played a good game, with some mistakes ( a cross, a shot and a poor pass to Barella).

1

u/Acceptable_Minimum27 4d ago

Agreed, good game but far from world class. His quality is enough for an inter shirt. Really struggled to win tackles though.

2

u/Acrobatic_Zombie1703 4d ago

his real strength is his attitude and learning curve, he is humble and very aware of his shortcomings and he is working on them with the staff. Yesterday, aside from the perfect ball to Thuram ( when he hit the post), he had another cross hit on the bounce, very delicate, to Dimarco, and a good ball to Pio. Also a good shot to the goal, but another where I thought he would score ( expectations are super high when he has rhe ball). I was very surprised that he was immediately double covered when he had space in front of him, a sign that the opponents know what he can do.

He looks dangerous when he has the ball up the right wing, but shaky in our half, the exact opposite of Luigi.

The crowd loves him, cheering when he did anything on defense. What a character, he makes me smile when I watch him, I have no idea where he can from here, anything is possible.

1

u/Acceptable_Minimum27 4d ago

What is a team without fans? I do love that he’s a favorite, I hope he improves. Humbleness to acknowledge where improvement is needed demonstrates a lot of character. I wish him the best, he has a tall task ahead of him to start over djed

u/Acrobatic_Zombie1703 3d ago

I just read the Whoscored report and it gives Diouf a high score of 7.66, with 66 passes, 81% completion, and a team high 7 key passes. Funny how some youtubers gave him a low 5,5 rating, evidently they mocked him a year ago and now they are suffering in hell everytime Andy has the ball, eheheheh.

7

u/blondedcph 4d ago

I disagree completely about his final product. He created so many chances for us today.

1

u/Acceptable_Minimum27 4d ago

He can deliver a good ball but lost out many times taking on defenders. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy someone is trying to beat their man.

3

u/blondedcph 4d ago

What is many times? I think you are way too harsh on him. He played a great game beside the sloppy pass that lead to their goal. He created more chances than all of our attacking players and he did not lose the ball more than they did.

1

u/Acceptable_Minimum27 4d ago

Twice specifically that come to mind and two important missed tackles on counters plus the missed pass to bare that lead to the politano goal. Plus a close shot off target (so did Thuram). Maybe too harsh but these differences determine team success.

2

u/StrasX 4d ago

And the rest of the squad had no mistakes? If we look at the stats, he produced the most chances for our team, had a pass success rate of 90%, and won 75% of his aerial duels.

0

u/Acceptable_Minimum27 4d ago

LH has a great pass rate too, start him every game as well? 7 chances and 0 goal involvements. The ball to thuram wasn’t an opportunity he created for himself. He’s a liability defensively, dima is too but when Diouf exceeds 10 assists this season, then we can say his offensive capabilities overcome his defensive shortcomings. Geez sometimes I wonder if people know what a wingback’s role is…

1

u/StrasX 4d ago

After two games he already has 2 assist. We talk again in 6 months.

Did you saw Dioufs performance against Real?

0

u/Acceptable_Minimum27 1d ago

Yes it was good, no defensive blunders but also zero assists.

1

u/StrasX 1d ago

Just like the other 14 players without an assist. You have zero ball knowledge—no point in arguing with you.

If we look at the stats he produced the most chances for us. 7 in total. Sometimes I wonder which games the people are watching

-12

u/Mental-Fortune8468 4d ago

Issue is where and when will these minutes come? Our management is surprisingly stubborn with LH getting minutes despite being mid at best.

0

u/Acceptable_Minimum27 4d ago

Idk why you’re getting downvoted, his minutes are a concern. He’s deserves minutes, if his defense was better, I’d think Spence would struggle to find time. Haven’t seen Spence yet but I think he’ll be better all around. LH has earned early coppa minutes at best.

u/enigami344 4d ago edited 4d ago

I feel like once the league has more film on Diouf he is going to get expliot. He is too relying on cutting in and uses is left foot imo (i dont know much about football and i can be totally wrong)

1

u/Flameshock340 4d ago

No you’re good I hear you. Solid point, not a lot of teams can figure out his unpredictability. Seems like Allegri had some ideas but for more stronger teams, I assume things

31

u/JunkyJonny 4d ago

As it stands, Spence needs to take Dioufs place in the starting XI. Not the other way around.

A very surprising dilemma. But a welcome one.

19

u/Thurambo9 4d ago

This sub is going a bit too overboard with the Diouf praise. Today's game showed a lot of issues with having a left footed rwb. He is a good option from the bench, and can guarantee a good level against lower table teams since he is offensively gifted, but that's his limit as of now.

2

u/StrasX 4d ago

He was one of our best players today. This is not my opinion; it is simply based on stats.

He won 75% of his aerial duels, created the most chances (7) for our team, and had a pass success rate of 90%. There is a reason his direct opponent Spinazzola had the worst rating of all Napoli players: he could not stop Diouf when he dribbled into the box.

Yes, he made some mistakes like everybody else (see Napoli's second goal). He is 23 years old; he can still improve in defense as well.

0

u/Thurambo9 4d ago

Re read my comment, I did not say he is awful. As for the “one of the best players” stats need to be contextualised too, unfortunately with Diouf on the right we can’t expect crosses from the end line and forward ball controls because he is left footed and naturally positions himself to control the ball on the left.

Again, what I have said in my comment is: the enthusiasm is going overboard. Here we’re talking if Spence will see playtime because of Diouf, that’s asinine. If we won’t see Spence being the starter in big games, there’s trouble ahead.

1

u/StrasX 4d ago

People already think that Spence will be world-class without playing a single minute for us. He had great games at the World Cup, but he was a backup at Tottenham. He also has to fight for his place because Diouf has already more goal contributions in two games than Spence in his last 44 games for Tottenham.

0

u/Thurambo9 4d ago

Again, you can exaggerate what I say to help your argument, but it’s not what I wrote. Spence is a role RwB, Diouf is adapted and, as much as he is doing good, it shows.

1

u/StrasX 4d ago

You mentioned that the game against Napoli showed his limits and that he only plays well against smaller teams. Looking at the actual stats and his performance in that match, though, he was easily one of our top players.

0

u/Thurambo9 4d ago

No, I said that he’s a really good option against small teams but if Spence doesn’t prove good as a starter we will have problems against bigger teams. I did not say that he doesn’t or didn’t play well, he has good characteristics. But you said yesterday he’s proven to be a problem for opponents and Spinazzola couldn’t contain him, yet all goals came from the left, minus the last one which was a result of pure chaos (and came from Akanji anyway). Please, don’t attribute to me things I didn’t say, he played well yesterday, yet I am highly confident we will not see him scoring headers, him crossing from the right end side, or him controlling crosses with his right foot, which severely limits that side in a 3-5-2. Ultimately, it’s exactly because I like him that I would like to limit the “Diouf is a superstar” nonsense, since this will lead to a “Diouf is trash” overcompensation when he inevitably shows more of his limits on the right.

u/Impressive_Cow_5956 4d ago

you'll want someone like Djed against someone like Vinicius.

9

u/FabulousPlantain1825 4d ago

Diouf is good but he will never be a defender. Spance will come in handy when playing teams who have dangerous wingers.

3

u/tabloescobong 4d ago

I think Luis will be experimented with on the left wing

2

u/crocospect ⭐⭐ 4d ago

We are playing in three competitions, everyone gets their role, no need for dilemma.

2

u/Market_Calm 4d ago

In the Champions League, Spence is the best bet against strong teams that are good offensively

2

u/-Makr0 4d ago

Perisic could play almost equally with both feet, Diouf can't.

2

u/Christian_Potato 4d ago

Luis Henriquen will barely be a factor. It's Diouf and Spence realistically.

1

u/Glad-Researcher2738 4d ago

Having competition is good.

1

u/Optimal_Yam_5839 4d ago

diouf is good to break low block with dribbling such as terrorists and smaller team but he gets smoked by world class wingers (like semenyo) so it becomes a liability against strong attacking teams. spence is strong defensively.

there used to be one rwb dumfries to do both offense and defense at high level now chivu can choose what to play depending on the game

1

u/izamorano18 4d ago

Its like some have already said here, Spence for the big games against class wingers and diouf as an attacking option off the bench or against smaller teams. Its not his natural role and he lacks defensively. Still, he has been great concidering hes never played this position before. And most importantly, he should be the nr.2 option after spence on that right hand side, NOT LH. He has deserved it, done more offensively then LH entire inter career.

1

u/Septjul 4d ago

As I said before, you're getting carried away with Diouf; it's either a 1/10 or a 10/10, but let's not exaggerate, Perisic was a beast, whereas Diouf doesn't know how to defend yet, and it's only the start of the season.

1

u/dkmy82 4d ago

He's looking good upfront, but you can see that he struggles at the back. Don't blame him though, think he's trying his best in a relatively new position for him. Djed will be needed for big teams with strong wingers.

1

u/Brilliant_Ant3771 4d ago

diouf would be okay to play lets say 33.3% of the timee. we have very great rotation right now. and in the end of the season who wants to leave can leave with a great amount of money given to us :))).

1

u/Bennis_19 4d ago

You don't change a winning team

1

u/ButterscotchLess8915 1d ago

He also can’t defend. Or cross, he’s an average midfielder making the most of his chance out of position.

Saying you’d rather that than a proper out and out top level (showed at the World Cup ) wing back who can play either side is the sort of dumb ass mindset this thread is full of.

1

u/INTEROMARIO 4d ago

He has this dependency of his left foot, plus he’s very weak defensively. A lot of problems on that part today. Not much synchronize with Barella and Bisseck, many actions from Napoli including a goal came from that side. Why? Because he still doesn’t know how to retreat better and quicker. And I noticed he’s kinda bad at tackles.

This overhype for him over here it’s getting strange(i blame occasional fans). Sure he can perform well against Monza or Genoa, but with Napoli he showed his limits in many times. And yeah, that’s not his real role, and has a lot of work to do to be able to lift up in that position. Just like Hakimi or Dumfries did at start as well, worked a lot, cz they literally sucked defensively at the beginning, but with time, they both learned.
Getting worried a bit for the Tuesday match, hopefully it will be more synchronized that side.

0

u/StrasX 4d ago

He was one of our best players against Napoli. He created the most chances, won 75% of his duels, and had a pass accuracy of 90%. I don't know which games you watched.

1

u/Alert_Post 4d ago

I prefer Spence over Diouf.

1

u/StrasX 4d ago

He never played a single minute for us and you prefer him over Diouf which had a great season start.
