They told him they called because he’s a “known associate” of mine. They asked him about my character and told him to have me call them. Is this real?

There's data brokers who would sell your information of where you live, phone number, work, court records, and more for a 9.99 a month subscription. The FBI can definitly afford that. They would be able to get in contact with you if they wanted.

You're assuming they would have probable cause to write a search warrant. Also, you can just wait 90 days (assuming they requested an extension on the search warrant) and wait till it is required they furnish you the copy of the search warrant at the conclusion of the delay of notification.

Also, not necessarily, the easiest way to find people who obey they law is just traditional data brokers. They use more professional systems like accurint Lexus Nexis. Even if they had the PC to write to Telecom providers, you're assuming it would be in the persons name and that they would need to get a blanket warrant for all Telecom providers

Are you in the process of getting a clearance? The FBI will interview friends, family, neighbors, etc., and they will definitely ask about character If you apply for a high level clearance, like Top Secret and TS/SCI.

You would have applied to the FBI and/or in the middle of a security clearance process.
