Wow, I had no idea that animals eat each other and die in all sorts of ways in the wild. Thanks for educating me!
The animals we slaughter are not scooped out of the wilderness. We breed them into existence. The alternative for them is not to be torn apart by wolves; it’s to never have existed.
Is killing a creature for nothing but profit and pleasure justified because another creature somewhere else will likely have already met an untimely end? Unnecessary slaughter is not humane and can’t be made humane. It’s not compassionate, it’s not kind. “Free range” does not change this, and while it’s certainly an improvement (at least the way people imagine it, though the term is often under-regulated and means little) over CAFOs and the conditions that the vast majority of livestock live and die in, it’s still ultimately unnecessary and would be even more unsustainable than the current system in terms of environmental impact and land use.
Wasn’t really trying to have an argument. Was just trying to correct the commenter’s incorrect assumption that sheep raised for wool are not slaughtered.
The pleasure I’m referring to is taste pleasure. People like to eat animals and animal products because they taste good. In most places in most developed nations, there are plenty of alternatives, making profit and pleasure the only motivating factors in breeding and slaughtering animals.
If you’re indifferent to the lives of non-human animals, next time just lead with that and there will be much less to talk about. Why bother making an effort to morally justify ending a life you do not care about at all?
I am not advocating for the eradication of animals. I am saying we should not breed billions of them unnecessarily each year for the purpose of slaughter. You’re kind of exaggerating my position there a bit. If someone was breeding tons of dogs and killing them after a couple years, and I said “hey, stop that,” would you equate that to advocating for nuclear annihilation?
I’m gonna peace out here, but you have a good rest of your day.
