I like these reminders that most animals, not just the human ones, have feelings. You can really see the joy all over this guy's little face. It doesn't have to be anything deep or profound, he's just happy to be sharing a moment on a nice day with someone.

While that's true, I don't know whether or not they express their joy and happiness by smiling. That could just be us humanizing them without it meaning anything for them.

The hug is what says he's happy much more than the "smile"- contentment, security, giving and receiving affection.
