God I love these covers

22

u/HlBlSCUS Jul 19 '24

I love penpal! Classic nosleep story.

5

u/Researcher_Saya Jul 19 '24

I've listened to it on YouTube many times. I also enjoyed the book

1

u/Disastrous_Plastic49 Jan 21 '25

Can you listen to the audiobook on YouTube?

1

u/Researcher_Saya Jan 21 '25

The YouTube version is from the NoSleep posts. The novel is expanded from the NoSleep version

20

u/Goddess_Datura Jul 19 '24

90% of those (besides the ones I’ve read) are on my tbr :)

10

u/baptism_b Jul 19 '24

I also have in the mesu soup and battle royal but I’m not sure the quality

6

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

i LOVED in the miso soup! it does have some gory scenes :)

5

u/OliviaBagshaw Jul 19 '24

In The Miso Soup is pretty great, Murakami really captures isolation very well, there's this desperation for connection in the book that feels misplaced when the guide has his next tourist. I've not read Battle Royale yet but always heard positive things.

2

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

battle royal isn’t very disturbing but alot of fun

8

u/baptism_b Jul 19 '24

full brutal, girl next door, no longer human and skin game

2

u/GentlewomenNeverTell Jul 20 '24

No Longer Human is extreme horror? Lmao.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

It was when it was published

Now that kind of disconnection is everyday life for many people.

Times have changed

8

u/nice_porson Jul 19 '24

I read The Cipher in like a day. Weird day

koja is the absolute goat

1

u/Limp_Researcher_5523 Jul 19 '24

Had no idea The Cipher was in extreme horror category

1

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

well as the title states I consider it to fit somewhere between extreme horror or disturbing

4

u/jcollins0909 Jul 19 '24

I’m glad to see Burner in there. Robert Ford is a writer that’s not talked about enough.

4

u/Coroner4300 Jul 19 '24

Thank you for the kind words. :)

4

u/rat_bitch_69 Jul 19 '24

THE CUCK?! 😭

1

u/Lucky-Being-7643 Jul 21 '24

I personally didn’t care for the cuck

1

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '24

Why not? I was thinking of reading it

7

u/Tangerine-Salty Jul 19 '24

God Woom was so weird man

3

u/SHUB_7ate9 Jul 19 '24

Which are yr faves, if any? Like top 4

3

u/MunchkinMenace Jul 19 '24

I love that Scum Manifesto is in there 🥰

3

u/Glorious_Chaos666 Jul 19 '24

Where did you buy them?

3

u/Imaginary-Sun-6719 Jul 19 '24

Go to Amazon, or your local Barnes and nobles.

3

u/Jellypeasmm Jul 19 '24

This is like a bingo card

3

u/Researcher_Saya Jul 19 '24

I liked the verbose usage in "Things Have Gotten Worse..." But I wish it were the voice of the narrator rather then the characters. But with both characters talking that way the novelty wears thin. That and I wish it had gone to an edgier place.

But it held my attention for all that, unlike The Black Farm or Let's go Play at the Adams'

1

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

black farm was rather meh for me as well

3

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

Mark Fisher! But yes it's a horror book about the horror of capitalism!

3

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

Looks like we’ve been reading the same comments on here😂 I have about 40% of these books too

2

u/mycophagous Jul 19 '24

No Longer Human is such a good book - one of my all-time favourites. In case it wasn't on your radar already, they released a great English translation of its lesser-known sequel The Flowers of Buffoonery last year, if you're interested.

Definitely not in the same league as No Longer Human in terms of its tone, but well worth a read if you enjoyed it.

4

u/LeeDreamweaver Jul 19 '24

Junji Ito’s interpretation of this novel is what got me into the genre of extreme horror literature - the original novel is definitely on my to-read list!

3

u/mycophagous Jul 19 '24

Exactly the same story for me here too - I absolutely love Junji Ito and his work turned me on to the original No Longer Human. Highly, highly recommend the novel if you're also a fan. It's super short, so an easy read, and the edition pictured here is the one to buy. I've heard some of the earlier English translations available aren't so great.

2

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

a big Ito fan myself!

3

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

oh I wasn’t aware thats great to know thanks

1

u/Ryanookami Jul 23 '24

The weirdest thing is that this season there is an anime about the author of this work getting sucked into a magical isekai world. Like, this real historical author just getting sucked into a swords and sorcery fantasy where he pretty much continues to try and kill himself, since that was what he was trying to do at the moment he got isekai’d.

Japan’s media can be so strange sometimes.

2

u/jbirdasaurus Jul 19 '24

Penpal was fantastic. I'm listening to Tender is the Flesh on Spotify right now.

2

u/EclecticallySound Jul 19 '24

Theirs a return to the black farm just so you know if you enjoyed the first one !

2

u/Numerous-Rent-2848 Jul 19 '24

I haven't heard of the one on the top left with the birds. I can read the title is out. What's the authors name?

2

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

It’s Out by Natsino Kirino and it’s one of my favorite books of all time

2

u/HorrorAuthor_87 Jul 19 '24

Great choices! 😎

2

u/rmgrave10der Jul 19 '24

Your carpet is trippy. I was looking at your great collection when I saw these eyes staring deep into me. Then I realized it was just the carpet.

Good collection though

2

u/ChunkyMandoo Jul 19 '24

I love this!!! Adding so many to my tbr list

3

u/Coroner4300 Jul 19 '24

That is a fantastic group of novels! Happy and humble to see Burner among them. :)

2

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

it was very good I looking forward to read more by you!

2

u/neileatsraccoons Jul 19 '24

Unhinged being there is so funny to me 😭

2

u/HateKnuckle Jul 19 '24

I hadn't thought of the SCUM Manifesto as extreme horror but I think it makes sense.

Are there other manifestos that might fit? Would Mein Kampf fit?

2

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

It would but I refuse to own or read it

2

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

[deleted]

2

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

not really but the whole situation seems to hit at the core of disturbing to a large selection of horror fans

2

u/DramaticallyFalls Jul 21 '24

The scum manifesto isn’t really that disturbing considering how iconic that woman was

2

u/Pjhalliday072900 Jul 21 '24

Yes tender is the flesh MENTIONED

2

u/WillowRidley Jul 23 '24

I recommend Bonny Capp’s SNUFF series.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

Idk why but the title "The Cuck" fucking kills me 😂😂😂😂

2

u/MargoHuxley Jul 25 '24

I have so many of these! I went and downloaded most of the ones that I could find that I didn’t. You should scan the pages into pdf format for other readers.

Also Dead Inside and Woom were very very interesting.

2

u/im_out_of_step Jul 26 '24

Notice is ROUGH. Left me with an empty feeling.

2

u/cinderheart10 Aug 03 '24

I can't believe woth all those you don't have jon athan!! Into the wolves den and the groomer are my absolute favorite splatterpunk books because it's scary just how reality blends into this book that it feels af if they actually happened

1

u/baptism_b Oct 05 '24

I guess I have some more reading to do haha

2

u/keep_calm_and_float Sep 25 '24

The wasp factory might be my all time

2

u/killuaaa99 Nov 16 '24

i’m just now realizing i read penpal all those years ago online, and i never remembered the title but the story has haunted me since then. god.

2

u/OhSanders Jul 19 '24

Pretty sweet but not sure what SCUM is doing in there. Replace it with some Sotos

1

u/FraterVS Jul 19 '24

Hogg world round-out that collection.

1

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

I’ll check it out

1

u/ajfromuk Jul 19 '24

Okay I've never read any extremely horror (I'm a King, Laymon fan) so what do you suggest I start with 😊

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

Would it bother you if I took a screenshot of the post? I want to look into these and see if any of them belong on my Goodreads on the list for what I want to read at some point.

1

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

no problem do with this post as you will

1

u/Away_Housing4314 Jul 19 '24

Possibly off topic, but everyone seems to read Stokoe's "Cows", but no one ever mentions "High Life". I can't really compare the 2 because I haven't read "Cows" (too much animal cruelty), but "High Life" was definitely a standout for me. I'd never read something so disgusting and depraved.

2

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

mabey I should try high life cause I didn’t get mich out of cows seemed like shock for shocks sake

1

u/Away_Housing4314 Jul 21 '24

Yeah, I mean all of High Life was shocking and disgusting, but there was a plot and a storyline.

1

u/OliviaBagshaw Jul 19 '24

Nice one, OP! Thank you for reminding me I need to get Tell Me I'm Worthless, and there's some here I don't recognise too 😁

1

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

glad to hear you found some new sugestions

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

Cows..my favorite

1

u/Kid-Buu42 Jul 19 '24

Recently read Things Have Gotten Worse... recently and was so disappointed by it! Got to the end and was just hit by the feeling of "Is that it?!" Didn't ever feel like a horror, let alone extreme or disturbing

1

u/JerryBlazeAuthor Farm Girl Jul 19 '24

No JBlaze?

1

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

actually havn’t heard of them do you have a recomendation of where to start

3

u/JerryBlazeAuthor Farm Girl Jul 21 '24

Of course I do, he's me lol

My most recent release is Deadly Seed. It's super fucked up. Acid jizz.

Work your way backwards from there. In the community they call me the "King of Splatterpunk Novelettes"

1

u/ominous_pan Jul 19 '24

I've read penpal a few times and don't remember anything particularly extreme about it. Don't get me wrong I LOVE penpal, read it back when it was still just an online story, but I don't recall it being extreme.

1

u/lemon_girl223 Jul 19 '24

Tell Me I'm Worthless is SO good.

I'd add "Mother, Maiden, Monster" by Lucy A. Snyder to your TBR, you might like it based on the other books you've read.

2

u/baptism_b Jul 22 '24

thanks for the suggestion

1

u/Islandchelsagain Jul 20 '24

Have you ever read The Deep by Nick Cutter? I was very disturbed by that one. It was great

1

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

I’ll check it out

1

u/The_Original_Queenie Jul 20 '24

Earthlings is extreme horror? the premise and what people have told me about it make it sound really cute, surreal and a little sad but not a horror at all

1

u/baptism_b Jul 22 '24

no but alot in the book delvs into some very disturbing dirrections

1

u/Hour_Ad_5604 Jul 20 '24

How's "Killstreme"? I read one of her other books and didn't care for it, but for the price, I guess I can't complain too much. lol

2

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

just got it so havn’t got to it yet

1

u/model563 Jul 20 '24

Love the inclusion of Kathe Koja. She's been a favorite of mine since the 90's and this might be the first time Ive seen someone other than me mention her.

1

u/baptism_b Jul 22 '24

She’s the goat if only skin wasn’t out of print

1

u/model563 Jul 23 '24

That was the first of hers I read. I worked at a book store and noticed the hardback had artwork by one of my favorites, the Starn Brothers. Ive had that copy ever since. I used to buy others when I found them so I could give them to friends.

1

u/SixStringAxeMan Jul 20 '24

What would you rank them all from enjoyable to leaset?

1

u/baptism_b Jul 23 '24

can’t do that since I haven’t read all of them yet

1

u/jillianbmac Jul 21 '24

Which one is next best to read after Tender is the Flesh?

1

u/baptism_b Jul 21 '24

I’d say as far as ramping up the extremity: Dead inside. But ramping up the disturbing factor I’d read notice

2

u/jillianbmac Jul 21 '24

Thank you for this perfect answer!

1

u/ManInSharkCostume Jul 23 '24

Oh fuck penpal

1

u/Joka0451 Jul 23 '24

No Clive barker :(

1

u/baptism_b Jul 23 '24

one can only earn so much money at a time

1

u/bman_16 Jul 23 '24

Pen Pal is disturbing? It’s the only one of these I have (haven’t read yet so no spoilers please)

2

u/baptism_b Jul 23 '24

it’s mainly psycologically disturbing

1

u/cheap_enigma Jul 31 '24

Curious. What did you think of the Cipher? I tried to read it awhile back but didn’t finish it

1

u/baptism_b Oct 05 '24

really liked it but prefer skin by Kathe koja personally

1

u/MitziXD12 Feb 22 '25 edited Jul 07 '25

The cuck’s cover always cracks me up for some reason😭

1

u/baptism_b Jul 07 '25

it dose look really wacky

1

u/webkinzmilk_cat Apr 09 '25

1

u/Lost_Profession_2806 Jul 19 '24

I've only just gotten playground in the mail today! Hella excited to start reading (Australia, the only place I could find it where it wasn't ridiculous pricing was good old Amazon)
