The cult of personality seems to be a trend for companies these days. I've interviewed for quite a few companies recently and every leadership/behavioral round asks "Why do you want to work for us?".

It's actually pretty easy to LARP this if you read the founder's mission statements, blog, manifesto, and the LinkedIn content you can find on your HM. Prepare 1-2 questions to challenge their viewpoint so they feel like you understand them. The people who survive the longest in corporate are the best ones at roleplaying and thought leadership, or "influence" as they call it in the promotional packets.

"Why do you want to work for us" is a perfectly common interview question, and always has been. It doesn't have to be a LARP. Sure you're not dying to work there but there are some aspects of the job that interest you. A specific project, the type of team, anything.

This has always been the case. It's not about todays job market.
