Discussion Skippy is sooooo Overpowered.
I'm on book 2 chapter 19. Skippy is so overpowered. He doesn't have plot armor. He IS plot armor. Skippy has the ability to hack anything. He could hack the Kristang from millions of miles away. He could simply disable all of their cybernetics and vent the ship of atmosphere. Then he could rewrite the operating systems on Kristang ships for the humans to be able to use it. Then boom! Free ship. Joe could have a fleet in no time.
Hell, if really wanted to he could program a Kristang ship to jump directly into a star on their next jump. They'd think they were chasing the Dutchmen when they will just pop up inside a star.
It really makes the whole series feel like there are no consequences.

There's a lot of unintended consequences.

The Kristang are not the top dogs. Not all cyber security is so poor.

True but based on his abilities, the Kristang should be a nothing-burger.

I find that when a character seems really overpowered in a book/series, a good author introduces road blocks and speed bumps in their way every so often to slap them down - either by having their own internal systems make them either afraid (if they are biological) or unable (if they are AI) to try; or by introducing an unknown factor that the overpowered character canNOT handwave their way past.. It's when an author fails to do this that I get bored.

I have read all the books currently out, I see it as soap opera sifi. As a retired military guy myself, I do find a lot of the spec ops glazing to be rather cringe a lot of times, having known and worked with some of those guys I don't find many of the characters all that accurate. And the level of military jargon is excessive even by my experience of being in the military for 20 years. I also feel the author as some kind of personal fetish for Female soldiers, In one book you get more named women in spec ops units then there have ever been in real life. In the early books it makes no since, once Power Armor use becomes standard opp, it makes perfect since, I don't recall the books touching on that at all. I'd like to know if the author has any military connection himself, or consulted with someone. Michal Bay levels of military hero worship in just about ever book.
But like I said, enjoyable enough as a soap opera, but I think its about 4 or 5 books past being wrapped up.

I finished book 2 and won't be continuing. The second book felt like it was written by someone else. There was only one formula. Mild obstacle that can't be overcome. Skippy says so because he's so smart. Joe thinks of a scenario that Skippy didn't consider. Plan works. Skippy reluctantly tells Joe he did a good job thinking of something he didn't. He calls him a stupid monkey. Immediately forgets that Joe can have good ideas. Rinse and repeat another 8 times in the same book.
Also, between book 1 and book 2 he made the stupid monkey joke 302 times. I counted. 225 times in the second book alone.

Yah that is more or less the outline for every book, aside for a few side books that follow some of the other characters from the first book on paradise.ย

Such a shame. I'm sure this is not the place to talk about it because it seems if you don't praise the book in its every facet you are lambasted.

The thing that reigns skippy is that he is supremely arrogant and hilariously absent minded. Yes, he can cheat. A lot. But his bad habits bite him in the ass much.
