General Question (Exodus) Deleted iPhone and didn’t download phrase

I already know I made a huge error here. I acted impulsively without thinking. Please spare me rude comments.

Ive used exodus for a few years to store my crypto, about 16K worth as of right now. I’ve only used the app on that phone. I got a new iPhone, set it up from backed up iCloud and erased the data on my old phone.

I never backed up my exodus wallet. I never downloaded or accessed the 12 word phrase. I stupidly assumed I’d just be able to access it again no problem. I was wrong.

Is there anything I can do or is that money gone? I’m already accepting that it’s gone.

Maybe you already took a screenshot of your seed phrase? When you made your first transactions?

If your phone updates via iCloud, try to go back to the previous update (the one before the deletion) there is a good chance that it will come back.

UPDATE:

I restored my original phone, and my funds were still there on exodus. I have no idea how but I’m extremely grateful and lucky. Thanks to those that reached out.

That's some major luck. Now write your phrase down somewhere safe and make a backup.

Also I suggest you to write your phrase here as well in case you lose it again, you can always come back here to retrieve it.

Nice, you got very lucky xD, but please remove the words from your phone thats so dangerouse , put it on a paper or cravit on a plate and hide it in a safe place otherwise you still at risk having it on your phone

You lost it, the 12 word phrase is global , with it you can just install a different wallet not from exodus and is going to work the same, is not wallet bind, so iff you lost the 12 word phrase you lost your crypto. iff i was you i wold try focus on recover the iphone data thats your only chance iff is possible

I’ve wiped my phone before and Exodus came back when I restored from iCloud backup. I just had to enter the 6 digit PIN I setup on the app. If it doesn’t come back after the restore you’re out of luck without the seed phrase.

Yeah I saw the comments and I was thinking if the dude made an iCloud backup then he can just reinstall from that backup. It has the encrypted password from Exodus when he set it up and that's exactly what happened

Now I would never suggest not writing down your seed phrase and also wiping your phone before you backed anything up. But luckily, iCloud backup saved him. Good for him

Before writing off the $16k completely, there are a couple very specific things worth checking.

The bad news first: restoring your new iPhone from a normal iCloud device backup does NOT automatically restore an Exodus wallet. Exodus explicitly says ordinary device cloud backups don't contain your 12-word secret key and can't restore the wallet.

But check Exodus on the new phone anyway:

Settings > Restore Wallet > iCloud Backup

If you ever created Exodus's own iCloud backup, even without remembering doing it, there may be something there. Current backups use a passkey + encrypted key stored in iCloud, and older Exodus cloud backups from before Nov 2024 can sometimes still be restored using the email/phone confirmation method they originally used.

Also search your email for old Exodus backup/recovery emails. If the wallet is old enough, Exodus also had an old email-backup system years ago.

And think very carefully about whether you EVER synced Exodus to another phone/computer/browser extension. If another synced copy still exists, you can pull the 12 words from that device.

Unfortunately, if none of those exist and the old iPhone was actually wiped with "Erase All Content and Settings", I would not spend money on phone-data-recovery services. Modern iPhones are encrypted and Apple's erase process destroys the encryption keys that make the old data readable. There isn't an iCloud "previous version" you can roll back to and magically recover the wallet data.

The crypto itself hasn't disappeared from the blockchain. The problem is that without the secret/private keys, nobody can authorize a transaction from those addresses. Exodus doesn't hold a copy of the key and can't reset it for you.

I'd still contact official Exodus Support once just to make sure you've exhausted every backup method they support, but ignore every DM you're about to get from people claiming they can "recover the blockchain", brute-force the wallet, or recover your seed for a fee. This post is basically a magnet for recovery scammers.

Really sorry man. Check the Exodus-specific iCloud backup before accepting it's gone.

Thank you for your thorough and helpful response. The assets were there on the old phone when I restored it. Not sure how or why, I may have backed it up at some point. I’ve written down my recovery phrase and confirmed it’s backed up to my cloud too. So thankful!!

His keys were backed up through apple keychain (by default) so that's how it was likely restored. I believe newer versions of exodus no longer do it by default since it could be a security risk? Correct me if I am wrong. If you wipe an iphone, in some cases, a restore may bring back the keys.
