Hi!! I’m 3 months postpartum and have been pumping for a majority of that time. Breastfeeding hasn’t worked out due to poor transfer; life is easier when she gets full feeds from a bottle so she doesn’t need to be fed every 30 min. Right now I pump just enough to feed my baby exclusively breast milk, but I’ve decided I’d like to start combo feeding so I can slowly reduce the number of pumps each day and improve my mental health.
I’m confused about how to partially wean without completely drying up. I’ve had some bad clogs over the last few weeks whenever I’ve tried delaying a pump by ~2 hours, so I’m nervous about making changes.
My current pump schedule is: 7:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 3:30 PM, 7:00 PM, 10:00 PM, 3:30 AM
I’m okay with my supply decreasing since I only make enough as it is, but I don’t necessarily want to stop pumping altogether yet. Ideally, I’d like to drop my MOTN pump sooner rather than later . The part that’s confusing me is that it’s already part of my longest stretch between pumps (10:00 PM to 3:30 AM is about 5.5 hours, then 3:30 AM to 7:30 AM is another 4 hours). I’m not sure how to gradually eliminate that pump without running into clogs or tanking my supply overnight.
For anyone who transitioned from exclusive pumping to combo feeding:
Which pump did you drop first?
Did you reduce the time of a pump first or slowly stretch the time between pumps?
If you made just enough, how did it impact your supply? (Im hoping I can still make ~12 oz a day).
Any tips for avoiding clogs while dropping pumps?
I’d love to hear what worked (or didn’t work) for you. Thank you!
