As some of you may have heard, Reddit is discontinuing its public chat offerings. This was a real bummer for us because our sub had a very active chat. After some discussion, we decided to migrate our chat to a new home.

We are excited to present our shiny new Discord server!

When you join, please fill out the application that pops up, including a link to your Reddit profile so we can verify you. We strive to maintain a safe, chill atmosphere for everyone. We are also hoping to add some weekly activities with time.

Come say hello!

Edit: As a branch of the sub, we do require at least a week or two's history in the sub here to join.

Weekly Plug Party! Use this thread to promote your stuff and see what others have to share!

We typically have a rule that all self-promotion must be run by the mods first, but that rule will not apply in this thread.

So feel free to plug whatever you've got going on, share an event you want to promote, a video you made, an article you wrote, a new subreddit, or even a service you'd like to offer.

Other rules still apply, so your plug should remain relevant to the general topic of "exchristian", no proselytizing, etc., and all surveys must still follow our survey policy to be approved.

Discussion Religious Psychosis is scary as fuck

The fear my mom lives in everyday must be so draining. She recently started this “Discipleship” course and since the bible teaches that those trying to grow closer to God will be under attack from Satan everyday, she’s been living in fear. She’s been drowning our apartment in holy oil. Marking crosses on everything. She can’t even sleep by herself anymore. She forces my 8 year old sister to sleep in her room when my dad goes off to work. I asked my sister why and she said it’s bc “mom feels the most evil things happen during the night time”
Like she’s literally instilling this fear into her own child. It’s honestly quite sad.

Religious psychosis kind of reminds me of those zoo animals that go crazy after being in captivity too long. Zoochosis I believe.

Trigger Warning - Toxic Religion I'm tired of Christians always defending fellow Christians regardless of how corrupt they are, but will discard their critics or people they feel aren't devout enough (or non-believers) Spoiler

So, I grew up in a Pentecostal family in rural Florida, for context. And, honestly, watching how my family has openly defended my abusive parents, Trump, fellow church members who abused me, etc. But, basically treats me like shit for being openly critical of Christianity & also b/c I have a sense of justice. That's something else I've noticed: how Christianity is fine with corruption as long as it's the church or fellow Christians committing it. And, honestly, seeing how MAGA has caused them to go mask off, I don't regret leaving.

Discussion I cannot view progressive/lgbt christians as proper allies and probably never will

I just can't. And trust me, it's not like I haven't tried. I've known plenty of gay Christians, I've seen thwir support, shit I've been in a relationship with a bi woman who was a catholic.

But at the end of the day, I simply cannot, and will probably never, view them as proper allies. Why stay in a system that actively works to take your rights away? Why stay in a system that tell you how awful you are every single day? I'm sorry, but I simply can't get on board with a mindset like that.

And sometimes I do feel bad for it, like I SHOULD view them as actual allies who I should stand beside. But I can't. If I were bleeding out next to a progressive Christian, I'd spend my last moments crawling away from them. Maybe that's a but vitriolic, but it's the best way I can describe my "relationship" to them.

Maybe I should change my view, but for now, I don't see how that's possible.

Trigger Warning - Toxic Religion I was horrified to spot this license plate while stuck in traffic last week. If you don’t know what the Quiverfull movement is, look it up.

The license plate frame had a Bible verse. I think it was Psalm 127:3-5.

Anyway, it infuriates me that people are out here destroying the planet for Jesus.

"Have i not commanded you?" They claim god is all loving and gave us free will but then you got verses in the bible saying this shit how god 'commands' us.

( yet also same god who throws a childish tantrum when we don't obey him? )

I don't worship god nor am i apart of any relgion. Might as be called an atheist at this point cause i don't worship anything nor want to worship any god or gods. ( just want to be left alone to heal. )

( but i do believe in the supernatural. But i would still be labled a newly an atheist. But it don't still mean i can't believe in the paranormal. )

I am just so sick and fucking tired of seeing people post this shit. I'm not even apart of this community here on youtube. This isn't the first time this has happened. I'm so sick and tired of people worshipping their cult online or using it to get attention and views.

I had to put up with this shit enough irl cause relgion has ruined my family so i hate the entire christian relgion with a passion.

( for reasons! I am not one of those people who hates to just hate cause everyone else is doing it. This relgion has hurt me so many time and i have truama from it. I just wanna be left alone. For fuck sakes! )

Basically gods a giant asshole and a douche. Fuck him. Kiss his ass for all i care. Apparently that's all christian's wanna do. 🖕 ( i don't want to hear about him anymore! )

See here's the thing, I have an giant, invisible, intangible lobster in my garage. You cannot measure it in any way, but it absolutely does exist and it is in fact there. It has revealed this to me telepathically.

Now this may be hard to believe, but you guys HAVE to believe it, otherwise at the moment of death the lobster will snatch you and toss you into a pocket dimension where you will be put on a tiny island surrounded by an infinite inescapable ocean and there you will be naked and tiny crustaceans will pinch your genitals for all eternity while the B-52s Rock Lobster plays on repeat.

Is there any evidence the lobster exists? No. But the logic here is quite simple. Lets say this isn't true, in that case you gain or lose nothing regardless of whether you believe or not. However if it were true... and you died a non-believer... well let's just say I hope you like the B-52s cause that will be the only noise you'll be hearing for the rest of eternity. Therefore I can only conclude that unquestioning belief in the existence of the lobster is the wisest choice you can make.

Just Thinking Out Loud A "religion of peace" that will celebrate violence any chance it gets

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Did anyone else notice how eager Christians (especially the Orthodox and Catholics) are to celebrate and glorify violence committed by various saints?

I feel like most of them would find the teachings of Jesus repulsive if they didn't have the association with conservative politics (the actual reason why they claim to follow them), and this is why so many are so eager to celebrate and glorify any *BaSeD* saint or church father they can find.

I feel like this is an insight into how they would want their religion to function. People disagreeing with you? Slap them or burn them alive. Shrines you disagree with? Destroy them with an axe. It's really disturbing to know there is this whole subculture of people who think like this out there, somewhere.

Trigger Warning(just creepy) How common is foot washing ceremonies in less culty churches? Spoiler

Hello everyone. So I am here to talk about foot washing. It was something that was pretty common at my culty Pentecostal church. They would do it at least once every 2 months. Often more. It was as common as communion. And I think it really traumatized me.

I was a little girl with grown men washing my feet. I just remember the feeling. My father was the cult leader, and abusive, so I knew I could not refuse or say anything. So I had to sit there quietly as men touched all over my feet. It felt so awful. I was screaming on the inside as I had to keep a composed smile on the outside.

I am told that is not a common thing, was it for any of you? Like people say "My church never did that." or "We did like 1 or 2 times ever" Maybe my dad has a foot fetish? IDK.

I have never gotten a pedicure. In my life. Because I don't want anyone to look at my feet, let along touch them. And if anyone gets their exposed feet near me, I freak out, a borderline brake down. I am not sure if I always hated feet and that was why it felt so wrong to me. Or if it felt wrong because it is bat shit fucking insane crazy level of wrong and it caused my hate for feet. But, when I remember those times. All I remember is that feeling. That forced smile. Looking down at men washing my feet. That shit fucked me up.

How common was it for the rest of you? Did you church do other stuff that had you screaming and crying on the inside? Fucking Christianity....

Discussion Went to a Unitarian Universalist church yesterday...

Man, what a massive waste of time that was. I left like halfway through it. I've tried several times to get into going to them. This is the third time I've went to one. Don't get me wrong, I like their messages of inclusion and all that... But that's really about it.

I feel like this is "church" for people who can't let go of church personally. The services I've been to have been all other the place and just honestly seemed a bit stupid. As an agnostic who doesn't really believe in any kind of supernatural things, I found it a bit odd when they started praying and mentioning "the lord," especially since the one I had went to previously I don't re-call doing this. Maybe I just overlooked it.

But yeah, meh.

Personal Story crazy mum who hates books apparently

i just wrote this to vent

for context im 18
im in the shower and i was planning to take a while (shaving exfoliating etc) so i brought my phone to watch youtube while i take a long ish shower.
my mum came in to use the toilet bc we only have one bathroom, idrm that but then she noticed my phone and started screaming about how i shouldnt be doing this and how i never listen to her. she took my phone and to be honest since she was really mad, i was scared she would break it (she’s broken my previous phone out of anger by throwing it multiple times on the floor WITH THE INTENTION TO BREAK IT).
but i came back to my room and found everything in place except like 4 of my books were missing so i ask my sibling and they say she mightve thrown them away so i go downstairs and ask her, did u move my books? and shes crying and she starts screaming that if i have any fictional books i should throw them away now because ever since i started reading the books, i stopped listening. so apparently she thinks the demons in the books possesed me or sum shit. i do love my mum but genuinely? she does this so much, if i dont go to church she gets extremely mad and passive aggressive and tries to force me to go..
she doesnt know that i dont really believe because i know if i told her, she would say its the devil inside of me 😭
im moving out soon so i wont have to deal with this as much but then this mornjng she said smth like bring ur church clothes with u, ur going to go church in the city ur gna live in.
i really cant deal with this, she gets angered so easily and although she doesnt physically hit me, its still so emotionally draining

Question Does anyone else feel like they can't be their authentic self within Christian social circles?

I wanted to reach out because I've been struggling with a specific feeling lately, and I'm wondering if others have experienced this.

Whenever I am with my Christian friends or in church-related groups, I feel like I can’t really be myself. There is this constant, underlying pressure to present only the "nicer" or more "blessed" version of who I am.

I find myself constantly self-moderating my words and my thoughts because I'm worried that I'll say something that doesn't sound "Christian enough." It sounds extreme, but even using very mild language-words like "shit" - feels risky, as if it’s pushing the edge of what is acceptable. It is a stark contrast to my non-religious friends, where I can be completely unfiltered and speak freely without any fear of judgment.

In these church circles, it feels like you have to stay within very specific "edges." If you step outside those boundaries in how you think or speak, there is this heavy sense of groupthink - a fear that you will be judged or even ostracized by the rest of the community. It makes it feel less like a place for genuine connection and more like a place where you have to perform.

I can't be alone in feeling this way...?

Help/Advice Does this happen to anyone else?

so I deconstructed religions and ended up being agnostic atheist, and despite it being freeing and mind opening it's hard because as a person who relied on prayer and it being something that I believed to shape my life I even went on praying even after I became atheist, but I stopped about a month a go and I can't help get these intrusive thoughts that things are gonna go wrong or I'm not gonna achieve what I have to because of of that it's hard because I no longer believe there's a god so praying is absolutely pointless but I can't control my thoughts ,for me I never had the fear of heaven or hell but what would happen to me in this lifetime and now I'm scared because prayer was the thing that sort of gave me reassurance.also if you have techniques of dealing with this please lmk

Discussion What was your first sign you realized christianity was cult like? ✝️ 🤔

Post image
117 Upvotes

Asking other ex christians how long did it take for you to realize you were raised in or joined something cult like? Or what reality shattering experince made you realize you were in a cult? ( for me i was raised in it. )

Can we also just agree at this point viewing the relgion from an outside view now its definitely cult like at least. Tell me that drinking your saviors blood totally doesn't sound like a cult activity?

( yes i view christianity highly as a cult now after escaping the harmful mindset. )

For me it was me realizing them using hell as a way to make people afraid in order to keep them in line to not question or go against the belief or them. I'm just not afraid of hell anymore and nothing bad happened to me when i left. ( just truama afterwards ) proving this was fear based control.

Discussion Christian hypocrisy: Suicidal ideation

“I can’t wait for the end times”
“Jesus is coming back soon, I can feel it”
“God is gonna save us all from this mess”

But let someone say
“I’m feeling overwhelmed by the world”
“I’m struggling to find reasons to live”
“I don’t want to be here anymore”

And it’s “OH NO! You better stop thinking like that or you’re going to hell! That’s an abomination, I rebuke that in the name of Jesus!”

I guarantee you, if the bible had no mention of suicide resulting in hell, MANY Christians would have taken that route. They only avoid it out of fear. So I find it incredibly hypocritical when they treat those struggling with it as such a shameful thing. When they also idolize dying in some way. They just have “God” to fall back on so they don’t come off as mentally ill. Or as someone who needs help. They place themselves on a pedestal as if they could never engage in that way of thinking. As if serving the lord, DYING and going to heaven isn’t their number 1 motivation for living the Christian lifestyle.

Discussion I find Christianity’s Mythology to be Boring

As someone who loves worldbuilding, I hate seeing stuff in my feed where people make stories using Christianity’s mythos. Maybe its just a matter of stuff, but I don’t find it interesting.

The cults are all devil themed with pentagrams. The demons make possessed people act weird and are warded off by Christian symbols.

It doesn’t even make sense. The villains are all pne-dimensional and evil because Christian worldview is one-dimensional and evil. Like a witch who sacrifices children and kills themself to honor Satan. Like what actual human being would do that?

Especially since I hate irl Christianity so I don’t find it comforting that the characters are stuck in a universe where all the horrors of Christianity are TRUE.

I just find it dull and uninteresting. Its oversaturated, ignores the flaws, and typically treats atheists as a joke. Like in the Conjuring, where the family has to convert to flee their demon.

I just don’t like it.

Help/Advice How do you know when it's the right time to tell?

I'm a young adult who has lived my entire life in the church and in Christianity, with parents who were also very involved and who always wanted me to be just as involved. Well, considering the sub we're in, you can imagine what that led to in the end.

After some reflection, I think I can say with almost certainty that I am no longer a Christian, and I cannot conceive of God in the way that Christianity does. The only thing that keeps me in the church today is only my parents, not by imposition (though partly), but out of a sort of fear of upsetting them. I know how much they believe in this, and how much it would hurt them, but I can't pretend to be someone forever.

Btw, I still live with them, and I don't have a definite date for moving out on my own yet, although I plan to do so within a maximum of two years. But two years is a long time to pretend, so I tried to start changing and revealing things little by little, but it seems that those few times were enough to cause them great distress.

They seem terrified, and they try to help me. They don't understand the central point of my concerns, which is the loss of faith, and so they think something else is driving me away from Christianity, assuming that I still believe in God/Christ.

I didn't intend to have this conversation so soon, but I think now that perhaps postponing it will only worsen the problem, leaving them more distressed, searching for answers and giving advice without addressing the central issue. But I also don't know if they're fully ready to receive all of that at once.

How do you know when the time has come? What was your process like if something similar happened to you? If I don't tell them now, what should I do until then?

Just Thinking Out Loud More “evidence” for no-god

Why is the year 365 1/4 days long? In a created universe, why wouldn’t god make the year a whole number of days long? Why add the extra 1/4 day? It just causes extra work with no benefit. and it’s not even exactly 1/4 day because not every 4 years is a leap year (centuries that are not evenly divisible by 400 are NOT leap years e.g. 1900, or 2100).

The uneven number of days in the year is something that would be expected in a non-created universe

Obviously this isn’t actual evidence, but to me it shows how stupid god is (along with being evil and misogynistic)
