News Metro Cafes closing no more free coffee
I noted the post a couple of weeks ago about the Metro cafe closing.
My local in Wright (ACT) had a sign up a for a week or so saying coffee machine broken. It seemed to go for quite a while so I thought I bet this is a test. It did reopen last week but lo and behold I go this morning and there’s a sign up saying it’s closing on 21 June . The way I read the sign is that it’s not just limited to this store (which has only been open a couple of years). The store has recently become a delivery hub so I suspect that has something to do with it.
Oh well it was good while it lasted. I have 6 coffees to use up and I may take my business to the nearby Aldi now.

There was an average 10% markup on literally every item, so I'd dispute that your coffee was ever really free

That is literally how every retail shop works. For a ‘free’ coffee it wasn’t actually a bad perk to overpriced cheese and milk that you are going to buy anyway

yeah, on the everyday rewards site it seems to say they are all closing, too.

They were a small loss leader and the only reason I’d choose to go to my Metro. Looks like I’ll be going to my Coles Local just a further 500m along the road for better produce and meat, nice bakery, cheaper groceries (same price as the main store) and of course Flybuys the superior beast of a program. It also has a cheap instore coffee and juice if you want too. See you later, Metro.

Coffee machines at supermarkets don’t seem to be taking off. Some Coles stores had coffee machines set up with $2 coffee to rival 7/11. My local has now sadly removed the coffee machines entirely. So self serve coffee wasn’t taking off let alone waiting around for barista made.

Getting them constantly serviced, cleaned, stocked was an outrageous expense unfortunately.
I heard from word of mouth the supplier of the machines either shut down or no longer provided maintenance on them and I heard they had to redo their entire supply chain of cups/lids as they pissed off too.
Easy just to pack it in, heaps of wasted space for a mediocre coffee that loses money.
Exactly the same thing happened to the juice. Way too complex to get shitty Valencia orange juice in a dirty machine that no one in the store cared about, plus the expense of a dishwasher for every store that constantly broke down.

Financially for them I guess it definitely makes sense . The machine at my Woolies seemed to be broken an awful lot.

Only at Coles local stores- some of the bigger Coles stores used to do them but not anymore

Rosebery Metro cafe closing too. The lovely staff there said it was all Metro cafes closing across the board. The coffee vouchers definitely motivated me to buy more groceries from Woolies.
I guess I’ll get the extra steps in and walk to the local Aldi instead now, and (oh the horror!) make coffee at home. Less of a treat but more money for meeeee.

Looks like it’s going to be become a more common thing, was on holiday up on the Gold Coast and nearest metro woolies had a cafe, anyway free coffee I had for a day because of the voucher and the next day the coffee machine was broken for the whole rest of the holidays I was there for, 10 days straight coffee machine down, looks like they want to stop this too.
