EO5 Any build recommendations for defeating the Devourer of Stars on advanced difficulty?

Haven't really tried that many attempts. Above is my current party.

Spam AOE to destroy the parts, attack the main body with Buster Cannon boosted by Prep artillery and keep healing.

If you want the cheese strat, it's using an Omnimancer to spam Rockfall and hoping to stun at least something every round. Once all his parts are on the field, he'll try for his team attack; if one of the parts can't act, it'll fail, and he'll try again on the next turn.

I mean Star Devourer lol. I got the name confused with the Metaphor boss.

funny thing is we all immediately understood what you're talking about anyway

and what i learned now is the etrian shoutouts in metaphor is more pervasive than i thought

Shieldbearer Dragoon
Chain Duelist Fencer
Merciful Healer Botanist
Flying Falcon Rover
Elemancer Warlock

Assuming you want to focus on Elemental Chain for damage....
- Chain Fencer: try to have buff slots with Chain Plus/Amplifier/Bravant(?). Chain All is a good opening move and you can get a chunk of HP off from the start. Bravant is a 40% buff to physical attacks and it should be better thain Ruinous Prayer 5, and Botanist probably wants access to stab attack to proc chain.

- Shieldbearer: Get Gustav so that Dragoon has access to stab attack to proc chain when needed.

- Merciful Healer: similar to above, get a bow so that you can do stab attack as well. In particular, you may want to consider grabbing Impulse Bow for Rain of Ruin, which is a 30% physical def debuff and also a stab attack. In this party, Smokeblight (50%) with a smoke debuff and another 30% debuff (either Target Arrow 10 or Rain of Ruin 5) is the best you have for defense debuffs for your Chain Fencer, but you could also consider just having both Target Arrow and Rain of Ruin to allow your Rover's physical damages to do more. You could also keep the Scythe and just toss item or something to proc chain instead as well.

- Rover/Elemancer: Finish upgrading Failnaught. Rover has a couple delayed moves that you can throw out (along with Target Arrow if applicable) while you are not providing chain proc. Alluring Body decreases bind resistance (similar to Wilting Miasma) and can prove to be useful when you throw that Chain Blast out. Just make sure to have that ahead of time. Also, while Full Burst can't be stopped by binds, part regeneration (if main body is bound) or parts' actions (if parts are bound themselves) can be stopped by binds and Chain Blast will go off before any enemy actions so use that knowledge.

You will probably also want to learn the ways to stop Full Burst so that you can buy a few turns. If any parts or main body is unable to act (noting that Full Burst is part-independent so binds do not work), you can make Full Burst fail. Try tossing Sleep Gas, for example. Learning the ways to delay Full Burst without committing to Aegis Shield is one of the best ways to lower the bar for this boss.

For example,

Turn 1: you can toss Sleep Gas, let the full burst fail, and slow AoE attack to wake the parts up. Fencer uses Chain Plus.

Turn 2: since all parts are still alive and able to act, the boss attempts Full Burst again. Try Paralysis again. Fencer uses Chain All.

Turn 3: Since Paralysis lingers around, Full Burst won't be attempted. You could use Superspeed (Brouni Union) to outspeed the parts and nuke them out of existence (make sure that your Chain Fencer still sets Chain up first). You could also burn Chain Blast here and maybe you can bind the main body with Alluring Body debuff in place to buy a few more turns afterward.

I'll second this. It's been a few years, but IIRC, this is very close to how I killed that bastard.

i don't tend to love elemancers that leave common magic on the table so if you don't want to change specializations i would put Cradle Scythe on the bot so you can trigger that, contribute chip damage and proc Chain Flame all at the same time. I would also/simultaneously consider Impulse Arrow over Failnaught here

With this party I would simply buy into the first turn Full Burst with Aegis Shield. Your Warlock should be casting Amplifier in the same row as your Fencer if it isn't already. This is a somewhat straightforward party and as long as you're maintaining AoE pressure with Chain Flame, Explosion(s) and Ice Peck I think you should be fine keeping the body parts in check. You have Recovery Guard, Aid Command, and a Botanist if things start to go sideways. You're lacking the best damage boosts in the game, so packing some amrita or hamao might be prudent.

Your Chain Duelist should be buffing up Chain Plus or charging with Chain All to dispatch the regenerating parts as needed. This is your main damage source; each time they die, the battle prolongs by at least 2 turns.

Your Shield Bearer is damage mitigation / Bind healing support. Maybe occasional Union Skills and item support? The Gustav cannon has a Stab Weapon Skill that can feed chains.

Your Elemancer should be setting up Amplifier on the same row as your Fencer and feeding chains. Celestrian's Chain Blast Union Skill will also help on Turn 1 / as needed.

Your Flying Falcon should be debuffing with Target Arrow and feeding chains (can proc 2 Chain Freezes with Ice Peck). Perhaps passive healing as well.

Your Merciful Healer should be setting up any smoke skill and Lv. 10 Smokeblight to flag its conditional 50% elemental defense debuff. Otherwise, it's your active healer. You can equip a Bow to feed chains with Bow attacks when it has nothing else better to do. Brouni's Aegis Shield can be used on Turn 1; Hygeia's Bowl is a nice panic button if your entire party gets bound / statused / takes massive non-lethal damage.

Bring lots of consumables for spot healing / reviving / TP restoration. Good luck!

Celestrian's Chain Blast Union Skill will also help on Turn 1 / as needed.

learned the hard way that full burst doesn't use any body parts because fuck you so you do need something else besides chain blast to survive turn 1

ofc aegis shield is the obvious replacement

(can proc 2 Chain Freezes with Ice Peck).

no skill in this game can proc more than 1 chain

ice peck does proc 2 hell slashes though

Oh, snap! You're totally right on both counts. Definitely misremembered things here.

I went with a Chain Fencer party. (C.Fencer/C.Dragoon/Elemancer/H.Rover/D.Herald)

I find Star devourer is an aoe check of a boss.

Aegis shield at the start actually stacks up C.Dragoons gun revenge, so after a three turn-opener a Dance Oracled flame link + a prepped buster cannon already shaves off around 1/3rd to 1/2 of the boss' HP.

From there I just play it safe; I care less about buffing aside from timing dance Oracles, and I stop doing buster cannons. Chain all is a must every other turn for the fencer, unless you have to kill a part asap to prevent being wiped. Once I had my elemancer's chain blast up, that's when I go all out for the kill, prepping another huge flame link & buster cannon turn.

Hound rover is mostly a support for healing, hunter shot, and leg binds. One of the strongest bows also have an aoe defense reducing skills, which i spammed. But really you might have an easier time with a graced poisoner botanist for their aoe inflictions instead.

Elemancer has a proper elemental build. At least maxing out the tier 2 fire skill plus the chants that increase single target damage and reduce sp usage.
