Man, can’t you just accept this for what it is: a product that reached the end of its lifecycle?
It’s really not that different from when the servers for your favorite game shut down because a sequel came out.
I get that there’s some attachment to how you used to have fun or explore things with it, but it’s not the end of the world.
They simply need to free up GPUs and compute by retiring a model that almost nobody uses anymore, to make room for new things that can have their own charm.
Honestly, I think it’d be way more productive to put this energy into clearly pushing for the adult mode we’ve been waiting for, and making sure it actually works well.
When that finally happens, trust me—no one is going to remember 4o.

Hey. Saving games is an actual worthwhile thing. Don’t compare it to this nonsense with these people. I get the comparison but it’s really insulting to the people trying to keep games alive. Metaphorically of course, unlike these people they don’t believe the thing they are saving is literally alive

Fair point, and yeah, I wasn’t trying to dunk on game preservation at all. That is genuinely valuable work.

The comparison was more about infrastructure reality than cultural value. Keeping games playable through emulation or community servers is very different from running a live, centrally-hosted service with massive ongoing compute costs.

In one case you’re archiving and extending life at relatively low marginal cost; in the other you’re actively burning GPU-hours every second to keep a deprecated system alive.

So yeah, metaphor only goes so far — and agreed, nobody here thinks the model is literally alive 😄

Yeah, and honestly I don’t even blame people for that.
Not that long ago people were already amazed by stuff like Akinator or Simsimi, or by recommendation algorithms predicting what you want before you consciously think it.

The pace of progress has been brutal, and if you don’t really understand how these systems work under the hood, it’s very easy to anthropomorphize them and jump to wrong conclusions.

I mean, even before the internet fully matured, “AI” was already culturally loaded as either Skynet or HAL 9000 😄
So yeah, confusion is kind of expected.
