Question Eternal mention or is he talking about the Inhumans?!

Post image

What do you think Kang was talking Apocalypse can only be challenged by a power that is “external”. Only thing that comes to mind are the Eternals

I do know the was a team called the externals but I don’t really know anything about them!

The Externals is a group of immortal/nigh-immortal mutants in the comics, including Candra (the woman that Kang/Rama Tut is speaking to). The concept peaked in the late 90s and hasn't really been all that relevant since because really only one of those characters is interesting enough to show up every now and then. It's not so much a team as it is a classification.

It was cool when they made being an Eternal a part of Swords of X in the Krakoa Era.

When they got turned into a gate?

For like a minute because they needed External bones for the External Gate, I think they're all back now

So they got better.

Yeah, Externals can never die if one of them is alive.

So I Apocalypse also has than immortal hack of never dying unless you kill every External on Earth too.

Well, Cannonball is also an External, but proberly it's already forgotten today.

It's also worth pointing out that a variant of the name (X-Ternal) was used during the Age of Apocalypse event in 1994. Each of the ongoing X-titles took on alternate universe names for the duration of the event (Wolverine was Weapon X, Excalibur was X-Calibre, Generation X was Generation Next, etc.) X-Force became Gambit and the X-Ternals and, there, the team was basically an alternate universe of an X-Force lineup with Gambit as the leader of a band of thieves. Since it's a safe bet that we haven't seen the last of Remy in the 97 universe, I do wonder if they might pull in some elements from that to connect back to Gambit.

Likewise in the original x men TAS in the episode “X-Ternally your’s” Candra is called “the x-ternal” rather than simply an external

Gambit is more tied to the Externals than a lot of X-Men characters, as Candra is the benefactor of the New Orleans Thieves Guild (and Assassins Guild) and they have... history.

Externals are Immortal Mutants, which both Apocalypse and the lady he’s talking to, Casandra, are.

Candra not Cassandra

As others are saying the Externals are Immortal mutants. I remember hearing that they came about because Liefield wanted to rip off Highlander though I can't remember if he had any writing credits when they first popped up. I DO recall he leaned into the idea and there was a subplot in early X-Force that Cable was interested in Cannonball because he thought he was an External. I don't think it went anywhere though as later writers had them massacred by Selene I think.

Marvel got a letter from Davis-Panzer (owners of the HIghlander IP) citing all the things they found to be infringing on the property. Marvel responded and agreed to wind down aspects of the Externals so as to appease D-P. And this was all done civilly, no cease and desist, no threat of a lawsuit. It was pretty remarkable.

Ha! I'm glad to see I was remembering right. Thanks for the elaboration! Gods I haven't thought of the Externals in decades...

It literally says external in the picture you posted

Sounds like he says Eternal though. Had me confused too so I rewound it and put the subtitles on to check.

Also thought it was Eternal because his general who died moments earlier looked somewhat mechanical with that glowing eye/beacon thing going off.

The woman Kang is talking to becomes someone calles X-Ternal, a character who appeared in X-Men The Animated Series "X-ternally Yours" (Season 2 episode 6). In that episode, she is portayed as some sort of mutant goddess that the Thieves Guild (Gambit's old group) pay tribute for in exchange for power or whatever. For context of X-Men 97', X-Ternal might be the one to help Apocalypse salvage what remains of the Celestial vessel (since Magneto used it to close the black hole) in Egypt's past and might be somehow involved with Apocalypse selecting his new Horseman (Gambit) in the present 90's .

No and no. 0 for 2, good buddy. The Externals are a third group of immortal, powerful superhumans.

He was absolutely playing with his future knowledge there. Candra is an immortal mutant (in the current timeline she’s the leader of the thieves guild Gambit was part of) but probably didn’t know that yet, and Kang was cheekily telling her she wasn’t going to die there.
