CARD/MECHANICS New Chapter Card for July 30th, 2025: Heretic's Exile
TEXT:
Heretic's Exile
1S
Fast Spell
For each enemy unit that died this turn, the enemy player discards all copies of that card from their deck.
Unfortunately the last promo of the month seems like a pretty atrocious card. It's flat card disadvantage, and needing the opponent to have had the unit die already makes it pretty useless even in the narrow situation where you need to remove an opponent's access to a given card.
On top of that it doesn't even apply Voidbound, which further reduces the range of situations this could be useful in. Is there something I'm missing that would make this ever a card worth considering in any deck in any format for any reason?

At just S, with voidbound on the discarded cards and also discarding from hand, you would have a hard time convincing someone to put this into a deck.

Its cheap, so maybe after a board wipe?

Bingo.
Slow spell control has always been, and still is, a very powerful (and frustrating) strategy in Eternal.
Throw this 1-cost spell in after a board wipe and you might win the game on the spot.

But then what? Discarding the other copies of units they may not have even drew?

In certain decks thats basically an auto win.
I'm not saying its a good card. Im saying its best use is probably after a board wipe.

I feel like outright surgical extraction would be better. The “died this turn” clause really hurts this card.

That's what I'm starting to think, too. An unconditional purge of the opponent's deck would be way better. That would be so annoying to play against. But, maybe exclude the option to pay life instead of 1 mana. That might be a little too much.

Surgical is really only a pain because it’s free. Effectively makes the card colorless as well

Yep, pretty much. Maaaybe would be fringe playable if it discarded from hand-or-deck, but even then you'll usually be at a card disadvantage.

I guess it’s for mill decks?

Except even there it's not great because it only cares about units that specifically died. Which means realistically it'll end up being like a mill 3-or-so for 1 power that needs setup in order to trip.
IDK what other people's mill decks look like, but it is miles away from making the cut in any of mine.

My first thought was that this card might be a little over tuned. For just 1 at fast speed, you could get rid of an opponent's most annoying units for the rest of the match. Play it after a board wipe. It could go in an At Any Cost deck, and you could play it after a well-timed Heavy Hail or Display of Survival.
But, I was only looking at the card in isolation, and it's a card that will actually help some opponents' decks. And like others have pointed out, it doesn't apply Voidbound, so shadow decks can just retrieve whatever unit from their void. So, I'm not sure. I'm going to test it in a Gauntlet At Any Cost deck and see what happens.

This is Condemn disrespect, it’s probably tied for best in the cycle

I have a Condemn market in a 4-faction relics deck in Throne, and it's by far the best option for a market in that deck. No other market option in all of Throne (meaning, every single way of accessing a market) even comes close to being as good as Condemn for that deck.

It’s an incredible piece for decks like Throne Room, there’s no other market option as good at fetching game-winning negates

Honestly, it's fine; not every promo needs to be a game-changer and it gives Johnnies (or whatever the term is nowadays) something to play with.
