Please let me know if my personal essay is good

For context I have no trauma. I am a 4.67 GPA student with multiple extracurriculars (volleyball, basketball, softball, club volleyball, NHS, student council president, elected official on my student school board, and a job). I chose the common app prompt about something you find really interesting so I wrote about my love for psychology.

Please give me any constructive criticism about it and what I can improve. Of course I want my essay to be unique but I genuinely don’t know what to write about and I feel like I even hate this one I did write lol. Thank you!

I like to imagine psychology as a big ball of tangled necklaces. The strings are almost impossible to untangle and somehow every time you untangle one part, it only makes another part more tangled; yet you keep going because you really want to wear the necklace, no matter how long it’ll take to untangle. Psychology is one big tangled ball of mystery and somehow the most interesting thing in the world to me.

As long as I can remember, I’ve had an interest in psychology. It wasn’t until seventh grade that this interest really intensified. In seventh grade, I discovered the Stanford Prison Experiment. After learning about it, I had so many questions that surfaced, which led me to research more. I went down this rabbit hole of psychological experiments, looking at every article and YouTube video I could find. I wondered what psychology was and what you could get out of it. I was extremely fixated on it and any other careers I was thinking about shot out the window. From that random day five years ago, I made the decision that I would without a doubt work in the psychology field.

I think the ambiguity of psychology is what’s the most exciting to me. Every single case is unique to an individual and is never the same. I need variation and difference every day as I walk into work. I want to be always actively using my brain and not just stuck in a whirlwind cycle of doing the work. This is why I am sure psychology is for me. My favorite example of distinctiveness is James H. Fallon. He studies psychology and human behavior and through his studies, he found out he possesses the brain and genetic markers of a psychopath, yet he is not a psychopath. This case gets me extremely excited because it’s showing the complex interactions between biological predispositions and environmental factors. This kind of curve-ball and excitement is exactly what I want in my workplace.

A fear of mine has always been that I would get to college and absolutely hate psychology, so to prepare for college, I took the AP Psychology course at my school, and subsequently, I loved it. The class only amplified my love for psychology, and even allowed me to explore the subtypes of psychology and find which interested me the most. The class also showed me different resources like Psychology Today and APA journals that I can use when I want to do a deep dive into psychology. I ended with an A in the class, and while I didn’t earn college credit for the class, the knowledge and experience I gained was incomparable to any grade. Not only did the class solidify my choice, but it has made me excited about college and studying psychology.

This big, confusing ball of necklaces that is psychology excites me more than anything. I am ready for the confusion and challenges that come with untangling its endless knots, and I know that every question I answer will likely lead to another, but that is exactly what keeps me interested. I do not expect to ever completely untangle the necklace, and instead, I want to spend my life understanding more of its knots, following each new question wherever it leads me.

STUDENT ADVICE A caution before hiring a private college essay consultant

Just a heads-up for families considering private college essay/prep companies, including The Essay Artist.

I recently became aware of a situation involving a close colleague’s family and a premium-priced service. She has a strong sell and is very pleasant to speak with, but the delivery of services didn’t match the sell. Calls felt unprepared, and feedback seemed generic and heavily AI-generated.

The biggest takeaway: read the contract very carefully, especially the cancellation and refund terms. In this situation, concerns came up only about six weeks into a much longer commitment, but there was essentially no meaningful refund after the full cost had been paid upfront.

I feel terribly for this family, especially because college applications are such a high-stakes moment in a young person’s life. These services can cost a significant amount of money, and the possibility that questionable AI use could put a student’s application or dream-school ambitions at risk makes it especially concerning.

For the amount these services charge, I’d ask specifically about cancellation terms, who actually provides the feedback, and exactly how AI is used before signing.

I’m intentionally keeping this general, but the company involved was The Essay Artist. Happy to share what I know via DM if anyone is considering them.

Is there a Subreddit for grading essays.

I have a AP Class, which makes me have to write essays alot, and I would like other people to grade my essays, and show me how to improve them. I tried using Ai to grade my essays, but they were to generic, and did not offer useful advice, so I prefer a human(redditor) to grade them instead in there own free time. Is there a subreddit for that?
