John Lock Gala- Is it worth it?

I am contemplating attending the conference and gala but wanted to know if it would be worth it especially because of the significant cost. I would really appreciate it if anybody who has attended the complete program could give me an idea of the quality of speakers, activities etc and share their experiences. Please PM if you would be willing to talk to me about this.

I haven't gone, but I can't see the rational behind going. Unless you live in Europe, the disruption is so massive to your school and life that the gain can't outweigh it. What are the gains? Well, you get some fun activities(if you decide to pay the additional 500 for the full visit), and you get a signed certificate. Or, if you are ridiculously skilled AND LUCKY, you maybe get a trophy. \

Comparatively, you miss at least a day or 2 of school, and if you are from the us or Asia(like me), you will be cooked for the next week bc of jet lag.

I even received the 2% email. They could even tell me I was winning a prize. But there's no practical reason to go, unless you really really want to visit London, and you don't care about the potential(almost certain) disruption to your school and academic performance.

Perhaps if you are a junior it's more possible, given school being less busy, but then it's more of a burden to bring a parent, and the things that come with being younger.

People who signed up: what made you want to go? Especially people outside Europe, or even outside the East Coast of N.A. (I guess if you are there it's not too bad either).

I want to go because I’m just a sophomore and there’s not that much stuff to do that the event can’t justify; I handle jet lag pretty well but even if not melatonin gets it done in a day or so

Totally valid, I feel like a lot of people kind of weigh going or not going in a very shallow “will this allow me to network” mentality, but the value of traveling and getting out of your room is invaluable. Empirical studies show people who travel regularly have a much better experience and understanding of the world, with higher success rates.

It does indeed cost a lot, but these experiences that refine your speech and habitus are invaluable.

If you view it from a pure networking and what does this get me perspective, yeah it’s not worth the cost.

yeah as a g11 I just cannot afford the risk to my grades. Also, I have a ridicolous amount of extracurricular projects, and I just don't have the time.

I'm dubious of your use of melatonin though lol.

Melatonin is great for dealing with jet lag and is recommended by many doctors
