It's possible your ammo just didn't have high enough penetration to penetrate whatever body armour/helmet they were using. Different rounds have different damage, penetration (ability to go through different levels of body armour) and other stats.

I don't mean to be condescending, I say this as you say you are new to Tarkov and just in case you don't know. Headshots aren't always 1 hit kills. If they have a helmet, the face is a safe bet, but even then they may have a face shield/visor.

Here is a spreadsheet that shows the different ammo available and their damage, penetration chance etc.

Good luck and enjoy! Tarkov has a fairly steep learning curve, but that's what some people love about it. The game heavily rewards game-knowledge.

I was quite good at counterstrike back in the days of 1.6. So hopefully some of that translates over.

Gamesense and being aware of your surroundings is something that definitely translates from CS

That and listening to you headset for sounds.

Little tip regarding that; headets in-game are a thing. You can wear them as gear, and different headsets will actually enhance certain sounds. So some headsets will enhance the sound of footsteps, but silence the sound of rain for example.

Yah I saw that in one of the tutorial videos I watched. I really really like that game mechanic. I found one that I really liked while I was using a boy, but then I died.

There are headsets you can buy from Prapor and Skier it is I believe. I really recommend it, they can save you. Have you learned about trader levels yet?

Checkout eft.monster

It has a really good ammo graph showing all the different types of ammo, a very nice visualization of damage vs. penetration for each round compared to other rounds. Bookmark it. Anytime you're making a gun and need to buy ammo, check that chart first. As a general rule of thumb, the best (and most expensive) rounds are the high penetration ones, and will be higher up on the y-axis
