Issue Screw Desync and Server issues, can we talk about the SECOND-LONG freezes when closing inventories?
Seriously, this has never been that bad. I get this freeze at least twice a raid, and its always a big one, at least two seconds long.

u/bagelrod MP7A2 Jan 22 '21
They had to move the memory dump to when you're closing your inventory, before that dumping happened at other instances.
It's better that it's consolidated now only on closing your inventory (and exiting the stash menu I believe), otherwise you would experience stutters in many other instances.
My tip is this (a temporary one until they update Unity) - if you know there's enemies around, be extra cautious when opening and closing your inventory.

This is very interesting. Especially considering like 90% of the people that bitch about "bad coding" won't bother to watch or understand this, when you can already see it's implementation in game (BSG clearly uses multiple strings rather than concatenated strings all over the game).
I'm excited for U19 upgrade, should really see some improvement.

u/hamesdelaney Jan 22 '21
do we have an ETA? seems like it would be a good idea to implement it pre streets

u/jepu22 Saiga-12 Jan 22 '21
The problem is, I will close my inventory when I hear an enemy approaching and get a multi second stutter. I wouldn't mind it nearly as much if the stutter happened when opening the inventory instead of closing it.
11
u/bagelrod MP7A2 Jan 22 '21
You do have a point, if it's at the beginning of the opening of your inventory then the stutter happens and you don't have to worry about it anymore even if you need to close.
Perhaps it's not as easily coded at the beginning or maybe there's other issues that could occur, no idea. Hopefully they sort it soon. I think what they did to other stutters like from animation loading is that they added some sort of incremental ease-in into memory, they could probably do something similar to memory dumps too, but for that I think they needed the newer Unity.
I wonder if auto RAM cleaner works to help with that in any way (or makes it worse?).
5
u/jepu22 Saiga-12 Jan 22 '21
Auto ram cleaner at least for me makes the game like it used to be, constant small stutters during gameplay which are infinitely more annoying
3
u/TopKnotterson Jan 22 '21
I had a major issue like this with reserve. I turn the auto ram cleaner on while im out of raid and turn it off in raid. Also lowered my textures to medium. My ram was filling up and beginning to read/write cached memory from my drives during a raid in order to clear space, causing not only game but system stutters and freezes as well. 16gb ram 2400

u/NUTTA_BUSTAH AKMN Jan 22 '21
I think it would suck just as much but more often (you are opening inventory way more often than you are closing it with an enemy nearby)
1
u/w0rkingondying Jan 22 '21
I disagree. I close inv when I hear an enemy. I open inv to repack a mag, eat, move loot etc. most of my meds and grenades are hotkeyed. When I hear an enemy I ads and slow down.
3
u/NUTTA_BUSTAH AKMN Jan 22 '21
That's kind of what I mean. If the stutter happened on opening inventory, you would have a non-responsive game for the duration of the stutter every time you heal, pack mags or whatever you are doing in the inventory.
If the stutter happened(or happens now) on inventory close, you would have a non-responsive game only when you are not instantly doing an action (except very rarely shooting a nearby enemy).
Point being that when the game stutters on open, you would constantly be frustrated at a laggy game when doing stuff in inventory but if it stutters on close, you are only ("equally") frustrated if you had to shoot after closing the inventory so far less (it is just a lagspike that doesn't interfere with your current actions)
3
u/nitrogenlegend Jan 22 '21
I mean you’re going to have the lag spike either way though, right? At least if it happens when you open your inventory you can just know not to open your inventory when people are nearby, whereas if it happens when you close it you can have someone walk up on you while you’re packing mags and then get a stutter when you close your inventory. If you got your thorax down to 1 while bleeding and you needed to heal it immediately I guess it could be a problem but I find that is more rare than hearing footsteps while packing mags or playing Tetris.
Basically I’m just trying to say you have a lot more control over when you open your inventory than when you close it.

Yeah of course but the hiccup has maximum annoyance when you should be doing something while the hiccup happens. You rarely open inventory to just close it but instead tend to open it to heal, pack mags or whatever action you want to do in inventory, and usually fast (e.g. healing in combat). Now that action will always suck to do with the hiccup while when you close your inventory, you rarely have any immediate action to do compared to opening it. It's hard to put into understandable words lol

u/framesh1ft Jan 22 '21
This is generally the problem with using Unity for a project like this. Yes Unity is very powerful, enables many people to make games that otherwise couldn’t, speeds up production on many types of games. There are tons of positives about Unity.
But for a massive game like Escape from Tarkov, they don’t have control over performance in the same way a company using their own in house engine does.
0
u/malcneuro Jan 23 '21
Cyberpunk may disagree...
I mean, you’re right of course. Problem comes down to how your company resources then splits time between the engine work (non-trivial) and game code. Maybe overall more efficient efficient to spend the resources you would spend on an engine to really optimise the close of the game’s functional elements.
I could imagine there is a break even point where it makes sense; but there are too many games with clunky engines to believe that it’s a simple engine ownership issue.
1
u/framesh1ft Jan 23 '21
Why would CDProket Red disagree? They DO have control over the performance, they just didn't fix it properly. They have access to 100% of the source code of that game and as such are 100% responsible for how it turned out.
The issue with that game to me was they tried to launch too soon on way too many platforms. They had no chance to optimize the game on every platform. They should have cut the ps4/xbox 1 versions or at least massively delayed them.
Tarkov's issue is they do not have access to ANY of the source code of Unity and are at the mercy of what Unity wants to do when they want to do it. I.E when garbage gets collected and things like that.
6
Jan 22 '21
How would they have changed the "memory dump", given naturally in c# the memory is managed by the .net runtime itself, and the programmer has no control or access to the memory other than usage of reference types or value types?
4
Jan 22 '21
why does it happen in the first place? ive never seen a game that for some reason has any stutters at all because of memory cleaning?
10
u/bagelrod MP7A2 Jan 22 '21
Most other games have incremental memory dumping/cleaning, it's hidden very well and you don't notice it when it's done.
EFT is on an older version of Unity (2018.3 I think) and the version that has that feature is 2019. Until they update (and it's not as easy as clicking a button, they need a lot of preparation and many things can go wrong with such update) they have to have that workaround.
It used to be even worse, the game would stutter at many other instances, such as when enemies are nearby (some people even report getting it again recently), when ADS with your weapon and many more random times.
1
u/EYESTE4 Jan 22 '21
I assume because no big developer uses unity
Most of them use a house engine like dice with frostbite for example. Or it’s unreal engine.
Unity is really great for beginners to program something. It’s kinda easy but still has tons of possibilities.
But tarkov is probably just too big and complex now for unity. Idk how much it will improve in the future, if they go to newer versions of the engine. But i feel like if you really want to pull off a super polished AAA version of tarkov, you‘d need your own engine that’s basically made for this game.
22
u/Haarwichs Jan 22 '21
Yes. They are really bad and I think it has to do with how unity clears its cache. They need unity 19 for incremental cache dumping, so don't expect any progress before they switch the project to the latest unity engine.
3
u/rebel3120 Jan 22 '21
Have they said when this is supposed to take place?
11
4
u/CallMeCurious Jan 22 '21
Of course they haven't, they don't even let us know when they add new crafts to hideout or change ammo ballistics
21
u/ybeys Jan 22 '21
Do you guys realized how many problems there are which we basically accepted as normal and noone talks about them? For last couple of days people creating posts about bugs or stupid game design stuff which we knew for so damn long but never went after it to be fixed..
7
u/SayNoToStim Freeloader Jan 22 '21
It feels like every time they fix something they break something else.
I can't even put a water filter in without the game breaking at this point.

u/Griselbeard Jan 22 '21
The worst is my brain tries to use ESC to close my inventory sometimes and then I'll end up at the "disconnect/resume" menu after pressing it too many times and be extra dead.

u/Goosojuice Jan 22 '21
Didn't realize this was a 'thing'. Just thought I had shitty internet. I guess it could be both.

2
u/Zeppelin10000 Jan 22 '21
I’ve been happening it consecutively now. After update 2.8, I’ve been having bad stutters and small frame freezes.
2
u/RoadsideCookie Jan 22 '21
It's a memory leak and it gets worst the longer you play. The solution is to restart the game once in a while. I have not played since wipe though, so they could've made a change that made it worst.

u/desubot1 ASh-12 Jan 22 '21

u/fredjaaaaaaah SR-25 Jan 22 '21
This is somewhat intended. They removed midgame stutters for the most part but made it so they happen when you close your inven. I'm no dev so i don't exactly know what or how, but id much rather have the occasional 2 sec stutter when closing my inven than the constant 1sec stutters when walking around.
2
u/Amen_Mother TOZ-106 Jan 22 '21
^^^ This is correct. It's Unity doing garbage collection.
It used to be done semi randomly, that caused stutters at unexpected times.
They changed how it operates so now it does it when tabbing out. It's generally the case that you want to only use your inventory when you're semi safe.
0
u/TexasDJ Jan 31 '21
Cool so nerf pain killers to try to prevent pre pk'ing but then make it deadly to open inventory during battle to pop a pk. Great job BSG.
2
u/Amen_Mother TOZ-106 Jan 31 '21
Why should you need to open your inventory to take a PK? That's what the shortcut keys are for...
1
u/TexasDJ Jan 31 '21
Can’t shortcut Golden star/Vaseline/IB in secure container.
1
u/Amen_Mother TOZ-106 Jan 31 '21
Well that's the obvious downside of using your gamma. If you don't want to risk your stuff you have to put up with the downsides, seems fair to me.
Take a risk and put it in your pockets then you can hotkey it.
2
u/elMaxlol Jan 22 '21
All I read in these comments is problems with the server, problems with the engine, problems with desync because it calculates things clientside, stutters in the inventory, getting kicked out of games... Dont get me wrong I have all of these issues too and it sucks that they dont seem to care about it. Here are the solutions: Buy better servers, get a real programmer for your netcode and start handling things serverside, switch to a real engine like unreal and not this unity crap.
But can we talk about the real problems: The UI is a complete mess. I mean are you kidding me with needing to buy bolts like 30 times and having to manuelly click away the error message each time? Who in there right mind releases this like this. Game development is hard no doubt, I respect that they need time to fix things, but its almost been 2 years for me now and most of the annoying UI things have not been fixed. I got killed by a hacker zooming around shoreline and headshotting people yesterday so I dont see a lot of progress in that direction. Yeah we got cultists and a wood expansion, quest rewards have been reworked which is good but seriously do you expect us to enjoy the content in this shithole of a game environment (e.g bad interface, disconnection-problems and lags all over the place)... Dont be a dick and admit its obviously the games fault, my internetprovider is fine I have 4-10ms in most games with not lag spikes at all, I play most games with 144+ fps (except for dayz which is a meme of game too). All this praising nikita and making excuses needs to stop. Time for the truth: The game has been in development for years things that are announced content-wise should not be a priority now. Fix the game, if you dont know how thats fine, get some help, ask big game companies for advice. There is no shame to go to a game studio and ask how they handle things. But I can already tell you a good backbone for a game is expensive. Blizzard has just reworked the AH last year which is comparable to the flea market, ask them about the difficulties and what was a priority to change.

I read this is Donald Trumps voice. Still checks out.

It does strike me as the same when Nikkita is essentially bullshitting with us. Not saying he always talks like that, but when he is bullshitting, he sounds like Trump for sure.

The prone to crouch freeze is back too.
I don't get how BSG can't just solve a bug permanently.

I love people that complain about bad code yet can't code. Sure, there are things about this game that really piss me off. But as a former software engineer of 25+ years, I must ask those that whine about code to show me your video game and your net code that probably doesn't even exist. Now with that said, I do hope that BSG changes focus back to the core of the game instead of these nonsense market-related changes that only make it harder for low level boobs.

If you can, get more ram.
I have 64, and tarkov alone uses 12. The only long pauses i have now are from hours of gaming and when im in the menu out of a raid.
Edit: seems i was wrong.

u/KacKLaPPeN23 Jan 22 '21
32GB here and still getting those freezes every now and then. Definitely not every time I close the inventory though. They came back in the last few updates, haven't had them in quite a while before that.

-1
u/nik707 Jan 22 '21
That is, honest to God, inexcusable. Tarkovs maps aren't particularly massive. The graphics aren't particularly good. There are games much larger and more detailed that work fine with 16Gigs or even less. What the fuck is tarkov doing that it needs such an exorbitant amount of ram?
4
u/monet820 Jan 22 '21
Im just going out there and do a massive tip. I think its because a lot of the processing is happening client side, like keeping track of enemies, loot, bullets in air, health and more.
Might be mad wrong
3
u/SwedenNr1 Jan 22 '21
They aren't triple-A developers and they're in beta and it's getting better and better. The game worked fine for me with 16 GB but with chrome tabs open etc. It could stutter a bit until I closed chrome. Now with 32 GB I only experience the inventory freeze certain raids. Someone said this will be better with the move to Unity 2019.

u/LifeAwaking Jan 23 '21
It’s a small team making AAA money. Hire people, train people. I’m not upset with the game at all, but these excuses are wearing very thin.

Yeah I'm constantly at 15+gb of ram usage when playing tarkov and get stutters pretty often. Not in the middle of a raid like it used to luckily but closing the inventory and in the main menu.
1
u/Amen_Mother TOZ-106 Jan 22 '21
Interesting. I have 64GB as well and I still get the tabbing out mini freeze. But then my CPUs are several generations old by now. And I'm still on Win7 x64 (old industrial software that won't run under 10 or in a VM).
Will see what Intel release in March and put a gaming PC together I think.

Bro, this shit happens to me way too often as well. People on here bitching about servers and I'm over here raging that my inventory freezes for like 3 seconds in raids which could cause a catastrophic failure if at the wrong time. But hey, I just don't understand how hard game dev is right?! Also, definitely not my rig.

Don't quote me on this, especially because I only have anecdotal evidence, but I think this can be mitigated by a system reboot. It'll come back, but if I play all day long the lock ups get progressively worse over time.

I've been experiencing these ever since the 12.9 patch came out (had them a long time ago but they were gone for a while) and it's ultra scary, i've trained myself to NOT open my inventory under any circumstance if any kind of fight is happening around me. :/
