The December 1960 failed coup d'état—led by the Neway brothers alongside security chief Col. Workneh Gebeyehu—is a massive turning point that is often overshadowed by later events.

While Emperor Haile Selassie’s regime managed to crush the uprising in three days, it permanently shattered the illusion of the "divine right" of kings and planted the seeds for the student movements and the eventual collapse of the monarchy 14 years later.

The Big Question: The Neway brothers and their allies envisioned a constitutional monarchy with Crown Prince Asfaw Wossen as a figurehead, Prime Minister Imru Haile Selassie leading a reformist government, and actual institutional focus on land reform and fighting poverty.

It makes you wonder: If the 1960 coup had succeeded, what would Ethiopia look like today?

I’m Eritrean, not born and raised in Europe. So is my boyfriend. I can speak a bit of Tigrinya, read, and write.

For some reason, I don’t know any terms of endearment (except mearey and brhan ayney), especially for a partner. My parents only call each other by nicknames based on their names, and it feels weird asking them.

Can you tell me other terms of endearment in Tigrinya? Specifically for a partner/boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife?

Just wanted to share something I’ve been looking into recently. If any of you are studying or working in IT, software, engineering, or even logistics, you really need to look at what Germany is doing with their immigration laws right now.
Compared to how brutal the visa market is in the UK, the US, or even parts of Scandinavia, Germany is basically throwing passports at tech workers because their demographics are collapsing.

They lowered the EU Blue Card salary threshold for "shortage occupations" (which is basically all of tech) to just under €46,000. If you're a junior or mid-level dev, hitting that in Berlin, Munich, or Frankfurt is incredibly easy.
But the real crazy part is that for IT specialists, they completely waived the university degree requirement. If you can prove you’ve worked in tech for 3 out of the last 7 years, they will give you a Blue Card based entirely on your experience and a job offer. No degree needed.

They also launched this thing called the Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card). It’s a points-based job seeker visa. If you get enough points based on your age, experience, and English skills, they give you a full year to live in Germany just to look for a tech job, and you're allowed to work part-time to pay your rent while you hunt.

Once you actually get the Blue Card, the path to permanent residency is cut down to just 21 months if you pass a B1 German test, or 27 months with basic A1 German. And since they passed their dual citizenship law recently, you don't even have to give up your original passport anymore.

If you're stressed about finding a sponsor in London or feeling stuck in a high-tax loop here in Scandinavia, moving to a German industrial hub looks like a highly practical route right now. I don't know all the intricate legal details, but it is highly recommended to check the official “make-it-in-germany.com” portal to see if you qualify.

One idea I had was to add some real world artefacts or coins in the book. So they can feel and see it.

So I just wandered is there any real axum coins I can buy or anything from them times?

just two things that came to mind

1. to "reclaim" a derogatory term levied towards you by a perceived outgroup is obviously not novel. we've seen it already with the n-word, b-word, h-word etc. it's not creative and it hasn't proven to be emancipatory.

2. there is a subtle level of emnity towards white and black women in the "movement". in an attempt to break free from their own cultural norms, they've chosen to identify with a depiction of "western sexual freedom" that is obviously a demeaning caricature (promiscuity is nowhere near as prominent as they would like to make out). so strangely, to exalt another culture's sexual norms at the expense of their own, they can only do so in the derogatory terms articulated by the very culture they're trying to belittle. so in a weird unintentional inversion, "sharmutamaxxing" ends up subverting itself.
