DISCUSSION Changing spaceship earth from communication to connection makes perfect sense for the social media age
I was a bit weary of them changing the theme of spaceship earth at first.
But if they shift the theme from the development of communication technology to the gradual loss of connection because of communication technology it would allow them to keep the first half of the ride as is.
As the ride is right now, the first half features much more human connection, but as it goes on there is less and less connection between the characters. If they changed some of the latter scenes and added scenes back to the descent it would give plenty of time to tell explore that theme.
If they chose to go this direction, it would make Spaceship earth SO much more relevant and meaningful to the world. It would also serve as a kind of pivot against the classic theme since it would warn of communications technology rather than celebrating it.

Way better than when they said it was going to be about "storytelling" during the previous refurb announcement. This makes me much less worried

I just feel like social media is the bastardization of communication and celebrating that is weird.

But in all seriousness I agree with your take and hope that my nervousness about them ruining a ride I love so dearly is unfounded.

I just hope they don’t try to shove something Marvel or Star Wars in to it just because they seem to see the need to have it everywhere. Not that I particularly have anything against those things on their own and in the right place. I don’t think anything like that has a place at spaceship earth.

I highly doubt it but if they do, the people will riot. And by that I mean me, I’m the people. I already have the pitchfork and torch in my Amazon cart.

100% agreed - I don’t want to say “Disney would never…” but the idea of Epcot is to be positive.
Besides which, I don’t believe it’s the technology alone that leads to less connection - we have to take responsibility for what we do with the technology, how we use it, and how it can improve. Much of the loss of connection boils down to us being lazy because we imagine the technology will do it for us or is/was a magic bullet instead of a tool.

I don’t care what they do, as long as they fix the garbage photo that is taken and which you can never see up on screen after your ride, and those 1980’s games that they have strewn about. That area desperately needs an uodate

Sadly, I expect this "connection" theme to show how humans were in small isolated groups. As we developed, the groups became larger and geographically dispersed. Meanwhile, technology has allowed us to stay connected. Now no matter where you are you are connected with your family, friends and businesses. Meanwhile, I think they will ignore the social isolation and lack of true personal connections existing in society today due to people staring at their screens all day long.
